Gatenmaru is the leader of a small band of human bandits. Unbeknown even to the members of his own group is that Gatenmaru is in fact a moth demon. The first time he lays eyes on Tetsusaiga he desires it for himself. Quickly cocooning Inuyasha and Miroku in a poisonous web Gatenmaru poisons Inuyasha and refuses to release the half-demon and monk.

Upon learning that Tetsusaiga is useless to him because he is a demon; Gatenmaru grows bored and decides to murder some women his men have captured. Taunting Inuyasha and Miroku with the deaths of the innocent does not work, but Gatenmaru's men begin to grow weary of their leader. Soon Inuyasha has had all he can stand and transforms into his full-demon form. Upon seeing this transformation Gatenmaru is mildly impressed and transforms to his actual self, a gigantic moth creature. Consumed by rage, Inuyasha savagely rips Gatenmaru apart, making short work of the cocky demon.
