The Japanese school system is somewhat different than our North American system. One of the biggest differences is that middle school lasts comprises seventh, eighth and ninth grades in Japan, with high school being made up of tenth, eleventh and twelveth grades.
Similar to the American system, each class is taught by a different teacher who specializes in a certain subject. Unlike in the West however, the teacher changes classrooms after each period rather than the students.
School clubs play a particularly large role in Japanese school life, with most students being involved in some sort of after-school club.
