Tamako

Tamako is Rinne Rokudo's eternally youthful grandmother. Though she may look human, she is actually a full-blooded shinigami, a goddess of death charged with retrieving wandering spirits from the world of the living and helping them find their way to the land of the dead.

Fifty years ago while on a mission to reap a soul, Tamako met a young man and fell in love with him. She made a deal to prolong the dying man's life by fifty years in exchange for reaping ten times her ordinary amount of souls. Unfortunately, she also agreed that if she failed to live up to the task, it would be passed on to her descendants. Tamako married the dying man and extended his life, but ultimately she did indeed fail to reap the required amount of souls., Now her grandson, Rinne, is burdened with the promise his grandmother made.

Because of her failure, Tamako is also not allowed to live in the world of the living after the recent death of her husband, and so she must reside in the land of the dead. She hopes Rinne will return their to live with her, but so far he has been insistant on living on his own. Tamako's black cat, Rokumon, assists her in her soul reaping duties until his services are passed on to Rinne.

The Meaning Behind the Name - 魂子

Tamako means "soul child".
