Kyokai no RINNE Vol 1

Chapter 1: 謎のクラスメート
Nazo no kurasumeto
(The Mysterious Classmate)
When she was a small child, Sakura Mamiya saw a mysterious wheel floating in the air. An attractive, gray-haired woman warned her that she was not to get to close to it, before suddenly disappearing and telling her that she was to forget everything she saw there. In the present, Sakura goes to school where the spirit of a young man attempts to ask her out. She quickly brushes past him, as she races to class. Sakura thinks to herself that ever since her encounter with her aunt's spirit she has been able to see ghosts. At school one of her classmates comments that the boy who sits next to Sakura, Rinne Rokudo, has never made it to class. Just then Sakura sees him, an unusual looking boy with bright red hair and a strange jacket. It soon becomes obvious to her that Rinne can not be seen by the other students, and therefore he must be a ghost. When Rinne arrives he throws dog treats all over the floor and a large chihuahua spirit flies in. Rinne calls the spirit Chihuataro and tells the spirit that it needs to find "the wheel" and move on to the next world. Chihuataro promptly eats Rinne and flies away, much to Sakura's shock. On her way home from school, Sakura runs into the lovelorn boy spirit she saw earlier, and then sees Rinne. Believing him to be a ghost, Sakura rams her head into him, and is shocked to find that Rinne, now not wearing his unusual coat, is actually a living, breathing, human being. Rinne promptly tells her that he can send the boy spirit (and the now much smaller chihuahua spirit that is following him) into the afterlife for the paltry sum of 50 yen. As they talk, the boy and the chihuahua's spirits merge into a large boy/chihuahua amalgamation. Rinne warns that they are now an evil spirit and quickly tosses his coat on, grabs Sakura by the hand and pulls her into misty, mountainous landscape with the massive wheel from Sakura's childhood looming overhead. Rinne tells her that because the spirits are now evil, he will have to charge her 500 yen to dispose of them, which he says he knows a costly sum (it isn't). She quickly pays the fee and Rinne tosses the 500 yen coin down to a little hut below. From the hut someone tosses him a miniature version of the wheel which is burning with mystical flames. Tossing the wheel, Rinne calls out "Kasha Retsudan" as he divides the spirits back into their original form and they ride off on his small wheel. Rinne explains to Sakura that he "sort of" a Shinigami, a god of death. After his explaination, it's time to leave the afterlife and Rinne holds up a coin and tries to hypnotize Sakura, telling her to forget everything she has seen. The next thing she knows, Sakura is back home, but still remembers everything. At school the next day, everyone is surprised to see Rinne has finally come to class, and Rinne is shocked that Sakura still remembers him and his hypnotism failed.

  • Kyokai no RINNE has the important distinction of being the first manga to attempt an official weekly English release the same day as its Japanese release. Viz, the American publisher, was able to continue to uphold this, distributing the new chapters for free until chapter 90 when the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami disrupted things in Japan.
  • Takahashi's first editor on Kyokai no RINNE, Shunsuke Moteki, listed this chapter as his favorite chapter, he had been with her through the conclusion of Inuyasha, her prior series.

Chapter 2: 百葉箱の伝説
Hyakuyoubako no densetsu
(The Legend of the Weather Hutch)
At school, Sakura overhears their PE coach asking Rinne why he hasn't bought a uniform. He cryptically tells the man that he is wearing his junior high school's gym uniform, and that spending money on anything else would cause him to go to hell. Soon, one of Sakura's friends, Rika, starts to talk about a strange phone call she has been getting from a boy who demands to meet her behind the school's gym at 4:00. Even when she turns her phone off the call still comes through each day. Rinne overhears this and suggests they place an offering of food and money inside the small weather hutch behind the school, which the girls promptly do. Soon, Rinne arrives (invisible to everyone accept Sakura, due to wearing his mystical haori coat, which he explains gives the wearer an astral body). Rinne proceeds to take the money and eat the food left in the hutch, which causes Rika to flee as she see the items disappear. In her panic she drops her phone, and Rinne tells Sakura that they can use it to track the ghost. Rinne pulls a tin-can phone out of his coat and write's Rika's phone number on the end. After asking for ten yen to deposit into it, he pulls Sakura into "Spirit Way" a spiritual road that allows them to track the unworldly phone call to it's source. They arrive on a city street and see the boy riding his bicycle while he makes the phone call, just as a potted plant falls from a building, hitting him on the head and killing him. Both realize that it was his inability to meet behind the gym that day that is keeping his spirit bound to our world.

Chapter 3: 体育館裏4時
Taiikukan ura 4 ji
(Four O'Clock Behind the Gym)
At school, Rinne has started making silk flowers for a little extra money. Sakura decides to follow him to meet with the ghost at the location where he died. The spirit arrives, and Rinne throws his haori coat over the ghost, but turned inside out. Rinne explains that when turned inside out, the coat can give a physical body to a ghost, just as when worn properly it can give a human an astral body. The ghost, due to the pot falling on his head, has amnesia, so Rinne and Sakura decide to take him behind the gym where he was supposed to meet someone. Much to their surprise, Mr. Suzuki the gym teacher arrives. Feeling sorry for Rinne's poverty, he gives him a proper gym uniform, which overwhelms the boy. The ghost quickly realizes though that the uniform once belonged to him, and Mr. Suzuki, seeing the deceased boy, says that he used to get the phone calls before changing his number. As it turns out, the gym teacher had taken the boy's uniform by mistake, and the uniform had a message stitched into it from the boy's girlfriend. Now that he has the uniform, the ghost is able to pass on. Unfortunately for Rinne, he lost the free uniform that he was so excited to receive.

Chapter 4: どこかで会った女(ひと)
Dokoka de aitta hito
(Have We Met?)
Sakura dreams of a skull faced woman who tells her she will die in three days unless she makes an offering to the weather hutch. She sees the red wheel in the sky and awakens, recalling how strange the dream was. When Sakura arrives at school she overhears everyone else saying that they've had the same dream as her, and the skeleton woman appeared to them as well. The students begin to make offerings of food to the weather hutch, and Rokudo is there to take it as it comes. Sakura confronts Rokudo about the dream, but he says he knows nothing about it. Suddenly, the woman from the dream appears smiling behind him. She covers his eyes and makes him guess who she is. He immediately calls her "granny." Despite her youthful appearance, this is in fact true, but she doesn't like to be called this and pinches Rokudo's face for it. Afterwards she invites him to come live with her rather than try to make his living in the mortal world. Rokudo refuses. Sakura comments on Granny's youthful appearance, much to her delight, until she realizes that Sakura can actually see her. Granny admits that she is the one who forced everyone to have the same dream, in hopes that it would help Rokudo get some food. Though when he appears ungrateful for the help, she decides to take all the offerings for herself. Rokudo follows his grandmother into the afterlife, and Sakura grabs hold of him, going along too. Rinne tells her that she can't be there, but she reveals that she has been there before, when she was a child. Rokudo's sleeve rips and Sakura falls from the sky. She finds herself in a festival in the town below. Rinne goes to his grandmother to tell her what happened. She uses some crows to find out where Sakura is and learns that she has arrived at the Gateway to Fulfillment, the first step on the path to accepting ones death before reincarnation. Sakura is filled with bliss as she heads towards the wheel to be resurrected. Rinne rushes after her. Sakura approaches the wheel and feels as though she has seen it before.

Chapter 5: お・ね・え・さ・ん
O-NE-E-SA-N
(Y-O-U-N-G Woman)
Sakura happily wanders through the Gateway to Fulfillment with dozens of other deceased old people, awaiting her turn to ride up to the Wheel of Reincarnation. Some of the old spirits ask her if she really has lived a fulfilled life due to her young age, but she blissfully tells them she has. As she waits, she recalls her initial trip to this spirit world from when she was a child. While wandering behind her grandmother's house, she sees a large rabbit holding balloons. The rabbit beckons her to follow him, and leads her into this world. Sakura says she remembers being saved by a white haired woman, but she can not recall the woman's face. Just as she is about to travel into the wheel, she sees Rokudo coming for her, and remembers that she is holding a piece of his torn haori. Feeling regret about not apologizing for tearing it, the platform breaks and sends her falling. Rokudo makes a quick save and escorts her back to his Granny. Sakura soon realizes that she was the one she met as a child, and the old woman explains that the rabbit she saw was a "Damashigami" or a shinigami that lures living people into the spirit world in order to fulfill it's quota illegally. Sakura states that ever since her visit to the world of the dead as a child she's been able to see ghosts. Rinne explains that the only way that could have happened was if she ate or drank something during her visit. The old woman immediately recalls that she had given Sakura some candy when they met all those years ago, and that must have been the cause of her spiritual sensitivity. After their conversation is done, Rinne says he's going back to the world of the living with Sakura, which surprises the old woman. After they take their leave, Sakura asks why he doesn't stay with his grandmother. Rinne explains that he can't live in the world of the dead because he's "kind of a human being".

Upon seeing the handsome dying man, she immediately fell in love with him and arranged for him to continue living for another fifty years, after which he would be reincarnated as a mackerel. Rinne explains that his grandfather passed away in the spring. Sakura asks about his parents, but Rinne is tight-lipped about them, telling her that he was raised by his grandparents instead. Back home, Sakura gets a call from her school friend, Miho. Miho tells her that she saw a ghostly light inside the old school club building that is due for demolition. The girls go to investigate, and a large black ghost cat flies out, scaring Miho and her friend away. Sakura remains and sees Rinne attack the spirit and chase it away. On her way back home, she comes across a small black kitten that is injured. Sakura decides to adopt the little cat and takes it home for some food. As soon as she leaves, the kitten picks up the food and carries it off. Upon seeing this, Sakura chases it, and falls through a mystical portal that drops her out at the club house where the ghost cat was. Chapter 7: 契約黒猫
Keiyaku kuro neko

(Black Cat By Contract)
Inside the abandoned club building, Sakura, Rinne and the little cat discuss why he's there. The cat tells them that his name is Rokumon, and he is under contract to work for Rinne's grandmother, Tamako. Rokumon explains that black cat's help shinigami in their official duties, and that he has recently been released and was hoping to become Rinne's cat. Rinne explains that he does not have the funds to pay Rokumon's salary, and turns him down. After Rinne takes Sakura home, Rokumon follows her and tells about Rinne's complex past. It turns out that Tamako made a deal with her bosses that she would be able to live in the human world with her human husband as long as he lived. In exchange for this, she would have to increase her soul reaping quota by ten times. Tamako was not able to live up to this deal, and the rest of her quota has fallen to Rinne to fulfill. Because Rinne is half-human he does not have access to all of the powers that real shinigami have, and therefore has to pay for extra items to help him capture souls. Rokumon had hoped to work for Rinne and help him earn some extra cash. After changing into his scary ghost cat form and trying to frighten some of Sakura's classmates, Rinne decides to take Rokumon on as his cat in hopes of getting a little extra assistance and to keep the little kitten out of trouble.

(Afraid to Sleep)
Suzuki the gym teacher finds Rokumon on the school grounds and pets him. Sato, the school's nurse happens upon him and asks about the cute cat. Just then Rokumon senses a presence and spies a ghost moving through the campus. On top of the school, Rinne watches from a distance, but does not act. In the abandoned building that Rinne and Rokumon call home, Rokumon confronts Rinne about his failure to exorcise the ghost. Rinne comments that the ghost was much to powerful to act upon, and he certainly wouldn't do so without being hired to. The next day, Sakura and her friend Rika visit the school nurse and learn that another patient is having problems as well. Suddenly Sakura sees a wounded solider with arrows sticking out of his back appear. This Ochimusha. Ochimusha moves toward the sick girl and begins to force her to drink from his bowl. The girl, Kaori Himekawa, awakens and Ochimusha disappears. She tells Sakura and Rika about the dreams she has of the soldier trying to force her to drink and Rika recommends she visit the weather hutch and leave a message there. Upon arriving Rinne encourages Sakura to tell Kaori to leave bills rather than coins, and canned food rather than spoilable treats. In the letter she writes, Kaori reveals that the spirit has been haunting her since a school trip to Kyoto. Finding the 1,000 yen bill more than adequate to take the case, Rinne and Rokumon visit Kaori's house and wait for her to fall asleep. When she finally does, Ochimusha appears and is shocked to find another man with his beloved Kaori. As he runs away Rinne gives chase and finally uses his haori on the ghost to give him a corporeal form. Sakura arrives and hears the story of Ochimusha and Kaori. Ochimusha believes that Kaori is the reincarnation of a princess he loved hundreds of years ago. While Sakura finds the story romantic, Rinne says this is the hardest kind of ghost to deal with.
