Kyokai no RINNE Vol 6

Chapter 49: 聖石(パワーストーン)の呪い
Pawaasutoon no noroi

(The Power Stone's Curse)
Sitting alone, Tsubasa curses the fact that Rinne ruined his date with Sakura, and now even his precious power stone is tainted beyond use. Just when he is filling his lowest, Masato arrives and introduces himself, telling Tsubasa that they they both have a deep hatred for Rinne. He gives Tsubasa the Book of Devils, which he explains can be used in conjunction with the tainted power stone to curse Rinne. Tsubasa is disgusted by this suggestion and attempts to exorcise Masato, but his sacred ashes are no match for the powerful demon. Later Sakura finds Tsubasa and gives him some cookies her mother baked, which thrills him, until he realizes she has an entire bag filled with cookies and is giving them all away. Rinne shows up at the same time, with a can of peaches he reluctantly wants to give to Sakura, but as soon as he arrives a lightning bolt hits the can and fries him. Tsubasa realizes he has accidently cursed Rinne using the book and tries to get rid of it, only to have it continually find its way back into his possession. Once more he curses Rinne, sending a murder of crows to gobble up all of the cookies Sakura was going to share with him. Masato happily watches, knowing that no matter how many times Tsubasa throws away the book it will keep returning to him.

Chapter 50: 負の連鎖
Fu no rensa

(The Chain of Negativity)
Rinne finds a large bag of taiyaki and a protective talisman left for him anonymously at the weather hutch. It turns out Tsubasa, feeling guilty over inadvertently cursing Rinne, left it for him. Yet when Rinne arrives to class with Sakura in tow, Tsubasa becomes jealous and accidently curses him once again by creating a leak in the roof and ruining all of his taiyaki. Disgusted with himself, Tsubasa runs away and tries to burn the Book of Devils in an incinerator, and then plans on using the corrupted power stone to bait Masato. Tsubasa draws a summoning circle with the intention of trapping Masato, but just then Sakura returns the Book of Devils to him after it fell out of the sky on Rokumon. Regardless of what Tsubasa does, the book simply can not be destroyed. As soon as he takes it in his hand Rinne and Masato fall from the sky into the circle, and the trap intended for Masato falls on Rinne. Masato happily thanks Tsubasa for his assistance and mentions the curse he put on Rinne, much to Sakura's surprise.

Chapter 51: 精霊
Shouryou

(Spirits)
Sakura learns that Tsubasa is involved in the terrible things that have been happening to Rinne, but doesn't believe it. Masato says that after one more curse, Rinne will be permanently done for. Knowing that if Rinne gets cursed again Sakura will hate him forever, Tsubasa decides to make a bold move and curse himself instead. Rinne tries to stop him, but Tsubasa manages a rather weak-willed curse anyway. The fact that he tried to do the right thing partially purifies the power stone. Tsubasa thinks that cursing Masato would purify the stone even more, but Rinne warns him against it. Not listening Tsubasa attempts the curse anyway, but Rinne uses the talisman to protect Masato, backfiring the curse at Tsubasa. Even though he is injured the power stone is completely purified. Now with his new weapon ready to use, Tsubasa unleashes the true exorcising power of the stone, which unleashes five odd looking teardrop shaped spirits. They make short work of Masato, and Tsubasa apologizes to Rinne, who gets him to treat everyone to lunch.

Chapter 52: 同じ顔の幽霊
Onaji kao no yuurei

(The Look-Alike Ghost)
A rumor is sweeping through the school that straight-laced student council president Naomi Yuki disguises herself after school and mugs students for their money. Sakura's friend Miho refuses to believe this as she works with Yuki on the student council. However, after school Sakura, Miho and Rika are all held up by someone who looks very similar to Yuki. And while all three see their mugger only Sakura realizes that she is in fact a ghost. She asks Rinne about everyone being able to see the ghost and he says it must be due to the ghost having an important message to share, and not realizing she is actually dead. Rinne confronts the ghost in front of Yuki and grabs her umbrella before she escapes. He gives chance and finds her with Rokumon in an empty lot. Yuki tells Sakura that the ghost may be her aunt Ranko, who died when she and her mother, Rinko were both in high school. Rinne learns that while Ranko was a deliquent, Rinko was an excellent student, much like Yuki. When he tries to ask more questions about Rinko and Ranko's relationship, Ranko runs off. Instead Rinne uses a Tsukumogami to bring her umbrella to life in hopes of learning what is keeping Ranko in the mortal world. The umbrella is awakened and begins to shout hostile apologies.

Notes:
  • The long skirt, permed hair and stepped on shoes is the common outfit of a sukeban (助番), the leader of an all-girl gang. Dyed or permed hair was also a typical element of sukeban culture. There have been a number of manga, anime and films about sukeban including Sukeban Deka (スケバン刑事) and Terrifying Girls' High School (恐怖女子高校). In Urusei Yatsura Ginger, Pepper and Sugar are a group of outer space sukeban.
  • Furthermore much of the sukeban culture was parodied in Urusei Yatsura episode 72 where Lum wears a long skirt and crushes the heels of her shoes just like the ghost in this episode does.
  • "If you rat on me to the fuzz, I'll throttle ya." - This is also old fashioned slang. "Mappo" (マッポ) means "police" or "fuzz".
  • Ranko spraypaints よろしく (yoroshiku) meaning "please treat me well" however it is written with fairly dark kanji (夜露死苦) (night, tears, death, suffering). This is an old phrase used by motorcycle gangs. These are an example of "ateji" (当て字) where a word's typical spelling is subverting and different characters are used to make the same sounding word.

After she left she was in an accident and eventually died. Sashiosae

(Seizure)
As Kain and Rinne prepare to face off, the shinigami clerk tells Rinne that the two of them met breifly as children, though Rinne does not recall it. Kain could tell that Sabato was a scoundrel, yet his mother gave the shady man a massive loan taking only a useless pile of old kitchen appliances as collateral. A young Rinne arrived to try to prevent Sabato from giving away all the things his grandmother gave him but it was too late. Sabato takes Kain's mother's money and flees with Rinne. As it turns out Sabato had left Rinne's name as his cosigner on the loan thereby making Rinne accountable for his father's actions. With a slash of his staff, Kain slices Rinne's scythe in two and steals Rinne's life flame, causing Rinne's lifeless body to plummet to the ground. Kain also takes away his haori, annoucing he's going to travel to the afterlife and sell it along with his life flame. Panicing, Sakura and Ageha insist that Rokumon help them pursue Kain so they can retrieve Rinne's life flame before he pawns it off. Tsubasa also insists on coming so that he can watch over Sakura should she need help. Much to their surprise, Rinne's disembodied soul joins them for the trip too. In the afterlife, Kain inspects the pile of junk that Sabato left his mother so many years ago and one sealed box in particular captures his attention.

Chapter 56: 資本金
Shihon

(Capital)
Rinne and the others arrive at the Life Count Administration Bureau, the headquarters of the Shirushigami (Shinigami Clerks). Without his life flame, Rinne is constantly attracted to the Wheel of Reincarnation, and has to be kept from flying towards it. If he were to touch it he would be reborn. Upon trying to enter the Bureau, the guards realize that Sakura and Tsubasa are living humans and chase them away as Kain watches on from inside. He realizes that if they have come after him to retrieve Rinne's life flame and haori, then they really must not know the location of the Damashigami Company. As Rinne is pulled towards the Wheel yet again, Kain's mother happens to come along and save him. She takes everyone to her mansion where they quickly realize that she has become so poor due to Sabato that she no longer has electricity and is using Rinne's life flame as a candle. Kain arrives, preventing Rinne from taking back his life flame, but he manages to get his haori, which when worn in reverse gives him a corporeal body. Angered by his mother's continued infatuation with Sabato, Kain drugs the others and locks them up in a room, promising not to hurt them, but insisting Rinne will not be so lucky. He plans on sending him to the Wheel of Reincarnation.

Chapter 57: 箱の中
Hako no naka

(Inside the Crate)
Sakura loudly bangs on a drum to awaken Ageha, Tsubasa and Rokumon who have been locked in the storeage room with her. They quickly discover the sealed box addressed to Rinne, but a barrier prevents them from opening it. Written in ink that only Rinne can see is a phrase he must read in order to open the box. Ageha realizes it might be a powerful weapon and blows the roof off of the storeage room so they can escape. Off they fly on Rokumon carrying the box with them. Near the Wheel of Reincarnation, Kain tells Rinne he will repossess the Haori of the Underworld and then allow Rinne to be reincarnated. He easily takes the haori, and without a corporeal form Rinne is immediately drawn towards the wheel. His friends toss him the box and he reads the invisible phrase, "congratulations on getting into elementary school." The box blows open revealing a giant ring. Only Kain seems to suspect what the ring actually is, but as soon as Rinne and Sakura grab it, they disappear- perhaps drawn into the Wheel of Reincarnation.

Chapter 58: 裁きの輪
Sabaki no rin

(Ring of Judgment)
Rinne awakens in a darkened room and finds Sakura on a small couch next to him. He believes he's been sucked into the Wheel of Reincarnation, and begins to apologize profusely to Sakura, telling her he'll make amends in their next lives. Back at the Wheel, Ageha and Tsubasa angrily confront Kain about causing Sakura and Rinne's reincarnation, but Kain simply tells them that he believes the Ring of Judgment activated before they were sucked in and took them to the location of the person who had truly wronged them, that being Sabato Rokudo. It is just like Kain suggested, and Rinne and Sakura soon realize they are back in Kain's house where they find Sabato chatting with Kain's mother. Rinne tries to get his life flame back, but Kain attacks both he and his father in the process. Just as Kain's attack is about to strike Rinne, the Ring of Judgment causes it to ricochet away. It turns out that the Ring of Judgment also acts as a "shield of justice" protecting its owner from any unfair attacks. Rinne manages to regain his life flame, and so Kain turns his attentions to Sabato. He tries to tell his mother that Sabato runs the Damashigami Company, but she ignores him. This gives Sabato a chance to jump out a window. Everyone pursues him, but he doubles back to steal from Kain's house, where Rinne finds him and uses the Ring of Judgment to bind him. Unfortunately Sabato is too smart and teleports away inside a giant tornado. Sakura makes Kain promise not to repossess Rinne's life flame again, to which he tacitly agrees. He then warns Rinne that he still holds him responsible for his father's actions.
