Chapter 89: 黒猫生命
Kuroneko seimei

(A Black Cat's Life)
Upon realizing that Ageha has been eaten, Oboro flees, believing that their contract is now void. A missle launches from inside the mongoose, flies out of its mouth and blasts Oboro, obviously sent by Ageha. Rinne quickly orders Rokumon to go retrieve Oboro explaining that if he breaks his contract and abandons Ageha he will be fined 5,000 yen and has his black cat license voided for ten years. As Rokumon heads off to find Oboro, Rinne heads into the mongoose to rescue Ageha. Sakura, Tsubasa and Rokumon all find a battered Oboro hanging from a tree and he is surprised to find that along with the missle Ageha sent his contract as well. He recalls their childhood practice sessions as they struggled to learn to vanquish evil spirits and the time that Ageha covered for him when she got hurt due to his accidently leaving her behind. Sakura and Tsubasa doubt the validity of the contract Ageha sent to Oboro, thinking perhaps it is a decoy to make him shirk his duties and get in more trouble. Inside the mongoose's stomach Rinne finds a door to an emergency evacuation shelter where Ageha is hiding. Upon entering he finds her lounging by a swimming pool. She quickly destroys the exit door, trapping Rinne and herself alone together.

Chapter 90: パートナー
Paatonaa

(Partner)
Oboro prepares to attack the giant ghost mongoose that has swallowed Rinne and Ageha, but as soon as he does, the mongoose regurgitates the giant orb shelter that Rinne and Ageha hid inside. Inside the shelter Rinne awakes and finds himself in what appears to be a luxury hotel room with Ageha closing in for a romantic moment. Just at that moment Oboro claws his way inside with Tsubasa, Sakura and Rokumon following along. Thanks to their ill-timed entry they find Ageha hugging Rinne on a bed, but Rinne promptly explains that it is not what it appears to be. Oboro explains that he had to come help Ageha or risk losing his Black Cat contract and getting fined, and states that is why she intentionally fled. Ageha corrects him, telling everyone she really just wanted to spend time with Rinne as if they were newlyweds. This enrages Oboro and he demands that she cancel their contract, prompting her to ask him if he really hates her that much. Rinne intercedes and explains that a relationship between a shinigami and their black cat is a very important thing, and that they each entrust their lives in their partner's hands. Even Rokumon is moved enough to proclaim that he'll stay with Rinne regardless of how poor his wages are. Ageha seems to have a mild change of heart and decides to make a small apology to Oboro, despite claiming that he is disobiediant. Oboro can not believe his ears and asks her to repeat herself. Ageha tells him he is pushing his luck and promptly shows him her the contract she still has for his services, telling him that as long as she has it he has to continue to work for her. Ageha and Oboro start to brawl again and in the scuffle Rinne gets to see the specifics of their contract. He is shocked to learn that Oboro earns 500,000 yen a month, sadly telling Oboro that he should never quit if he earns that much money. Ageha and Oboro returned the mongoose spirit they had used to deal with the snakes, earning them the wraith of Tamako. Crushed by their own poverty, Rinne and Rokumon sit at home making silk roses and sadly talking about how much money Oboro makes.

  • Kyokai no RINNE was American publisher Viz's first attempt at doing a simultaneous manga release the same week the chapter premiered in Japan. This went off without a hitch until this week, when the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami which struck on March 11th disrupted much of life in Japan. Viz was cautious to publish any chapters simultaneously when they were unsure if Shonen Sunday issues were widely available to Japanese audiences. Ultimately the Kyokai no RINNE simultaneous publication never returned and Viz's Shonen Sunday online imprint/web portal was retired.

Chapter 91: 消えた停留所
Kieta teiryuujo

(The Vanishing Bus Stop)
While riding the bus one day Sakura notices a boy wearing a summer school outfit. Sakura quickly realizes the boy is a ghost when two older women sit on his lap after not being able to see him. As the bus pulls away he writes "help me" on the window. Rinne expresses some dismay about dealing with a spirit anchored to a bus due to the fact he'll have to pay the bus fare in order to deal with him. After school Sakura and Rinne board the bus and find the spirt still sitting in the back where Sakura last saw him. When Sakura approaches him, he is excited that someone can finally see him and explains that he has been trapped on the bus due to the fact that the bus stop has disappeared. When Sakura turns to ask Rinne about it though, he has collapsed across a seat. Rokumon postulates that he must be overwhelmed by the luxuriousness of the bus, but Sakura says he simply looks like he's car sick. The ghost explains that during middle school there was a girl he liked who liked the same kind of music he did. When they graduated though she went to a girl's school. They realize he borrowed a CD from the the girl he liked before his death and perhaps returning it to her will free him of his attachment to this world. The ghost explains that he died while trying to reach the bus stop, and because he died before he boarded the bus, his ghost is stuck in the place he most wanted to be as he died- the bus. Rinne finds it difficult to concentrate between watching the scenery and getting motion sickness from riding on the bus. Soon it becomes obvious that the bus stop did not vanish, but that the ghost boy had not recognized the name of the schoo due to it changing from a girl's school to a co-education school that year. Sakura finds the girl and mentions the CD and the ghost boy and the girl reveals that she did have feelings for him. The ghost quickly tosses on Rinne's haori and leaps out to meet her, but before he can her new boyfriend appears and they go off to a concert together. Disappointed, the spirit moves in with the still sick Rinne until the shinigami feels good enough to escort him to the next world.

Chapter 92: デジカメ幽霊
Dejikame yuurei

(Digital Camera Ghost)
The girl's judo club at school contacts Rinne about a ghost stalker that has been bothering them. The members show Rinne some photographs from their club meetings and in the background a strange looking ghost wearing sunglasses, a hood and sick mask hovers around taking photographs of them. The captain of the club, Ryoko Tomoe, discusses the problem with the others who explain that they think the ghost is trying to take sexy photographs of them. Rinne tells the girls that he'll ask the ghost why he's been watching them, but as soon as the ghost realizes that Rinne can see him he flees. Rinne pursues him, hitting him with a paintball, but the ghost escapes through the spirit road. Meanwhile Sakura is walking nearby when the ghost's digital camera falls from the sky covered in Rinne's paintball. Rinne, Sakura and Rokumon all discuss what the ghost could be using the camera for when suddenly the stalker returns for his lost item. With one deft move Rinne tosses his haori around the ghost to give him a physical form, but the ghost runs off. Thankfully the ghost runs straight into Ryoko, the captain of the judo club, who promptly recognizes him as the ghost that has been stalking her club, and because he is wearing the haori, she is able to attack him. The ghost recognizes the girl, calling out her name just as she knocks him down. He pulls his mask down and excitedly asks her if she recognizes him, but she shoves him, knocking the haori off causing him to vanish down the spirit road again. Rinne presses Ryoko to remember, and soon she recalls a time when she was at her elementary school entrance ceremony and that same man appeared and called out to her. Her mother attacked him and told Ryoko that she he was a stranger. Rinne tracks down the ghost and asks him what his connection to Ryoko is, and the ghost confesses that he is Ryoko's real father. He explains that Ryoko's mother and he were divorced and he died in an accident a few days after trying to make contact with her at her the entrance ceremony. Rinne asks if that is why he was trying to take a picture of her, which the ghost confirms. Rinne once again loans him his haori so he can make contact with Ryoko, but the girl immediately attacks him, telling him she's heard all about him from her mother.

Chapter 93: メッセージ
Messeeji

(Message)
The story starts with A-ko, a thirty-eight year old woman who's identity has been obscured explaining that she and her husband were only together for a short time. She explains that there were various reasons for their divorce, but that it was a rather icy relationship. Ryoko interjects that that was her mother's story, but her ghostly father is incredulous about his daughter's explaination. Ryoko shows Rinne and Sakura a picture from her parents wedding, revealing that her mother was quite fat at the time, but after their divorce she had slimmed down tremendously. Ryoko explains that her mother lost the weight because she wanted to be a more suitable match for her handsome husband. The ghost reveals that her obesity was what he loved about her in the first place. Ryoko accuses her father of taking pictures in her dojo because he was trying to grab some sexy photographs. He smirks and makes a weak attempt at denying this, but soon Rokumon arrives after developing the photographs he took with his ghostly camera. Unfortuantely the photos all confirm his interest in fat girls. Ryoko angrily knocks him away. A short time later Rinne tracks him down, and presses him once again to tell him what is keeping him from passing on to the other side. At that moment the ghost remembers that he went to Ryoko's elementary school entrance ceremony with plans to slip her a letter of congratulations, but instead his ex-wife intercepted him and beat him up. Days later, Ryoko's father died, and his spirit watched as his ex-wife guiltily blamed herself for refusing to let him give their daughter his letter. He gives Rinne and Rokumon a massive pile of memory sticks from his digital camera, and the duo take them to be developed. They return to Ryoko and Sakura and show that the ghost had actually been photographing Ryoko all throughout her life. Rinne explains that the ghost was trying to communicate a message- in each photograph various signs would be arranged to appear over his daughter's head in the background. When placed together they spell out the message, "ganbare, aishitemasu," or "do your best, I love you". Having delivered his message, the ghost slowly fades away and passes into the next life. Sakura wonders if the rest of the memory cards may contain similar messages, but after developing the rest, Rokumon finds that nearly all of them are of fat girls. Later Ryoko reports that she asked her mother about the letter her father had tried to give her at her elementary school, but her mother had forgotten all about it.

Chapter 94: 消えた会費
Kieta kaihi

(The Vanishing Membership Fee)
Rinne's hand trembles as he slips a 500 yen coin into an envelope to renew his Shinigami Cooperative dues. After Rokumon takes off to deliver the money, Rinne explains that the 500 yen dues are paid each month and afford him a 10% discount on Shinigami tools, a benefit that is particularly useful for impoverished Shinigami like himself. Three days later during class, a voice can be heard coming from the chalk board and out pops a young female black cat by contract calling Rinne's name. The cat-girl hands Rinne a letter that explains his Shinigami Society membership fee is overdue, which immediately sends Rinne into a panic. He promptly goes back to the afterlife and visits the Life Span Administration Bureau where various records and legal documents are filed in the afterlife. As they wait, Rokumon angrily reassures Rinne that he delievered the money, and when they approach the desk to inquire about this notice of non-payment, they are assigned Kain, the shirushigami. He promptly tells Rinne that due to the lateness of his payment he now owes 505 yen for the renewal. Rinne insists that he check his records again, but Kain stands firm, he has not recieved payment. Kain claims that if Rokumon did in fact deliever the money that he can simply show him a receipt. Unfortunately Rokumon did not get one. With that Rinne leaves, and tells Kain that he will investigate what happened to his money. Kain watches as Rinne leaves and thinks that he is merely a pauper trying to get away with not paying his bills. Outside Rinne reaffirms his faith in Rokumon, and asks him to tell him who he gave his payment to. Rokumon retraces his steps, explaining that after he exited the Spirit Way he looked at some used items and read magazines, then grabbed some discount coupons before heading directly to pay the bill. When Rinne asks what the clerk he paid looked like, Rokumon tells him they had on a cat mask, so he is not sure. Inside the Life Count Administration Bureau, Kain takes a break and Suzu, the black cat that visited Rinne earlier arrives wearing the mask Rokumon remembered seeing. As it turns out, she is Kain's black cat. Rokumon explains that he got an identical mask from the rice seller by purchasing 500 yen of rice. Back home Kain sits in the dark, thinking about how much satisfaction he'll get by making Rinne pay his membership fee, while his mother wastes money on Suzu.

Chapter 95: プライドの値段
Puraido no nedan

(The Cost of Pride)
As Kain starts his work day, he finds that his desk is covered in powder and then spots Rinne behind his desk, dusting for fingerprints, and lectures him that the public are not allowed to come behind his counter. Rinne explains what he has learned from Rokumon, that the envelope containing his 500 yen for renewing his Shinigami license was taken by a person wearing a skeletal cat mask like the one Rokumon has. Kain seems to recognize the mask as being identical to the one Suzu had on, but instead presses Rinne on how much he spent on his forensics set since it was money that could have gone towards renewing his license. Rinne then reveals that if no one is allowed behind the counter, then why has he discovered dozens of child-sized hand and footprints everywhere. Just then Suzu arrives and quickly cleans up all of the dust Rinne spread around, but in the process everyone realizes she is wearing the mask that Rokumon said was worn by the person he gave Rinne's money to. Kain is coldly obstinate when it comes to this and keeps insisting that they have no proof. Suzu then brings Kain his schedule and when he flips the book open he finds Rinne's payment stuck between two pages. Kain thinks back and then remembers when he was called away from his desk for a meeting with his boss, and left Suzu to watch his post. With that he quickly closes the book with Rinne's payment inside, realizing he should hush this up rather than admit fault. Kain tosses a cat toy across the counter which releases smoke and during the confusion he tosses Rinne's payment onto the floor on the other side of the counter in hopes of hiding his culpability. Rinne, thinking something is amiss, quickly tapes the envelope to Suzu's back and tosses a toy back across the counter, hoping she'll take the envelope with her. Kain and Rinne continue to make her jump back and forth until finally she settles on the desk to eat a fish. Rokumon then angrily points out that she has the envelope on her back and demands to know if she remembers him coming in to pay the fee. She casually says she does not remember him, but recalls someone wearing a mask paying. Rokumon promptly puts his mask on and Suzu cheerfully says that it must have been him. Kain casually says that the matter is settled then, and asks to see the next customer. This is too rude for Rokumon who demands some form of apology from Kain, but Rinne tells him he is satisfied. Before he leaves though he shows Kain that he has bought a 5000 yen tape recorder and recorded everything that has happened. Suzu balks that someone as poor as Rinne would never be able to afford such a thing. Rinne explains that he was reimbursement in the form of 5000 yen, which he considers an adequate payment for the damage done to his and Rokumon's pride. Days later Rokumon proudly shows Rinne a coupon for 5000 yen that they got. Rinne happily tells Rokumon that it is hush money to keep them quiet. Rokumon then examines Rinne's "tape recorder" and realizes it is just an ordinary paper weight.

Rinne investigates the case of a lingering spirit who is obsessed with tennis. Unfortunately the ghost is terrible at tennis and shows very little talent for the game. Sakura and Tsubasa both play matches against the spirit to no avail, until finally Rinne presents him with a tennis racquet with a tsukumogami seal added to it, which helps to give the ghost an advantage. Tsubasa is quite competitive though and begins a serious battle against the sentient tennis racquet which results in them both knocking one another out. Ultimately the tennis ghost reveals his secret dream was simply to practice his swing with a pretty girl like Sakura.

Shinigami no tabuu

(Shinigami's Taboo)
Ageha and Oboro use a roach-motel like device to lure and capture wayward spirits so that they can redeem them for a reward. There is a very specific method of disposing of these little spirit traps in a timely fashion. If the roof of the spirit trap turns red then the expiration date has already expired. Of course Ageha is incredibly careless about details such as this. When Rinne finds the pile of spirit traps tossed out by Oboro, he takes them to Kain to be properly disposed of. Kain though finds an improperly disposed of spirit trap dropped on the floor and fearful of getting caught with it decides to slip it into Rinne's pile and frame him for having it.

Chapter 98: ポルターガイスト
Porutaagaisuto

(Poltergeist)
Sakura helps Yumi Kariya, a friend from school, move into a new house that is on the market for a suspiciously low price. Upon arriving they find plates spinning in midair and discover the home is haunted by a poltergeist. Only Rinne and Sakura are able to see that the ghost is actually a strange man wearing flippers on his feet, a tutu, baldcap and fake glasses with a moustache attached to them. The spinning plates that float mysteriously in the air are actually the result of the ghost spinning and balancing them on the end of long sticks. As it turns out he was going to entertain new employees at a company event but died due to exhaustion a few days before. Rinne uses one of his paintballs to allow everyone to see the ghost so that he can perform for them, yet unfortunately no one actually enjoys his comedy routine. The new family that is moving into the home convince the ghost to remove his glasses and bald cap and are shocked to find that the ghost is actually a very handsome young man. Ultimately, Yumi's father teaches the young salaryman ghost how to entertain one's co-workers, helping him to move on in peace.

Notes:
  • "This condo is 5 minutes from the station, a 3LDK floor plan, yet it's only 20,000 yen per month?!" - 3LDK means the condo is 3 bedrooms, plus a livingroom, dining room and kitchen. For a place of that size with located at such a convenient distance from the train station at such a low price would be unheard of.
  • Yumi Kariya's name is written 仮家ゆみ. Her last name means "temporary housing".
  • In German, "poltergeist" means "loud ghost". They are known a ghosts that clatter, bang or smash objects.
  • The poltergeist has a face drawn on his stomach similar to the Mark of the Battling God that was drawn on Ryoga Hibiki in Ranma 1/2 chapter 142.
  • "But eventually I worked myself to death." - Death from overwork is a real problem in Japan. It is known as "karoshi" (過労死). It can cause heart attacks, strokes and stress related deaths such as suicide.
  • "No! This is a must have item for a businessman's party!" - Wearing a necktie around ones head is a stereotypical drunken salary man trope. In America it would be similar to someone placing a lampshade on their head at a wild party.
  • The tutu with the swan head is from a famous comedy bit by Ken Shimura (志村けん) where he would sing "Higashimurayama Ondo" (東村山音頭).
  • The talent show sign Rinne posts says 爆笑オンエアバトル (Bakusho On Ea Batoru). "Bakusho" means a "roar of laughter" or "LOL".
  • When the poltergeist comes out and begins his act he says "I'm spinning more than usual!" (いつもより多めに回しております。) This is a famous punchline used by the brother comedy duo of Somenosuke and Sometaro Ebiichi (海老一 染之助・染太郎). They were known for spinning plates, balls, and rings on a turning umbrella, balancing and juggling.
  • "Yet you're hiding your true self. In other words, your performance is... lacking face!" - This is a complex pun. Mr. Kariya is talking about how the poltergeist hides himself behind his glasses and bald cap and obscures his identity before saying he is lacking face (in a literal sense). The term he uses "lacking face" (顔見世の場/kao mise no ba) is a phrase that also means "making ones debut".
