Chapter 99: 見えないキャンディー
Mienai kyandii

(Unsee Candy)
Tamako returns with candy that will undo Sakura's ability to see spirits, effectively reversing the abilities Sakura gained as a child when she was lured into the afterlife. Because the candy is a prototype that is still being tested, Rinne does not actually expect it to work all that well. Sakura agrees to test it and, much to Rinne's surprise, the candy actually works and removes her ghost-seeing abilities. At the same time Rinne receives an invitation to the annual "A-1 Grand Prix", in which shinigami observe various evil spirits who compete against one another in an attempt to haunt humans. Sakura is chosen as the human target of the spirits for this year's competition, but even the most powerful ghosts and demons prove unable to make her detect their presence now that she has had her spirit-seeing ability blocked. Rinne dutifully dispatches the spirits that fail in their attempts to haunt Sakura, all the while Sakura is completely unaware of his presence, and peacefully goes to bed for the night as he sits on the roof with Tamako where she tells him there are 5,000 ghost entrants participating this year.

Chapter 100: ターゲットは桜
Taagetto wa Sakura

(The Target is Sakura)
Returning to school, Sakura is hounded by dozens of spirits from the A-1 Grand Prix who are trying to haunt her. She is still unaware of their presence, yet Tsubasa tries to drive them all off in his usual overly aggressive manner. When Tsubasa asks her if she is alright, she explains that she is quite content about being normal for a change. At that moment Rinne arrives and fills Tsubasa in about the candy that has removed Sakura's ghost-seeing abilities. Rinne valiantly tries to protect Sakura from ghosts who try to knock her down the school stairs. Before long Sakura realizes that Rinne is not at school and she has not seen him for some time, as he has been wearing his haori so that he can fend off her invisible attackers. Rinne tries to communicate with Sakura by writing on her notebook, but she misunderstands his scribbles. Finally Rinne manages to swipe a strand of Sakura's hair in order to place it inside a substitution doll that takes on Sakura's apperarance and will hopefully distract the ghosts who are attacking her. When Tsubasa sees the Sakura doll nearly get attacked, he jumps in to save her before getting yelled at by Rinne. Rinne explains that this is not the real Sakura, which makes Tsubasa believe Rinne has made some sort of life-sized sex doll. Rinne quickly drags the doll off, which makes it appear as if it is floating in mid-air, so Sakura realizes he is present. The ghosts lurking around the real Sakura soon dash off to chase the fake doll Rinne is carrying, while Miho and Rika assume Rinne has some perverse hobbies.

Chapter 101: りんねはどこに?
Rinne wa doco ni?

(Where's Rinne?)
The Sakura dummy continues to lure the spirits from the A-1 Grand Prix to itself rather than the real Sakura who is unaware of everything that is happening around her. Using the doll as a trap for the spirits, Rinne dispatches a large group of them and then notices the real Sakura looking up at the building where he is standing. For a moment he wonders if she can see him, but then realizes she's simply staring at a blimp floating in the sky behind them. Later Rinne visits Sakura at home while still wearing his hakama. He ghostly phases through the wall and watches Sakura, sitting on her bed and pondering the candy Tamako gave her. Rinne lingers a bit too long and Sakura begins to undress in front of him, much to his surprise. Being the upstanding young man that he is, Rinne leaves to spare Sakura her modesty. The next day Rinne is once again absent from school as he, Rokumon and Tamako have to go around town picking up the ghost-contestants number placards that they wore during the competition. Upon being dispatched by Rinne, the placards were left behind and littered up the town. While Rinne is out, Sakura goes to his home and awaits his return, but unknown to everyone else, one ghost is still remaining hidden. The ghost looks like a serial killer with a large knife and upon seeing Sakura he prepares to strike. Just as he brings his phantom knife down to attack, Rinne flies in and banishes him. Sakura is unaware of what is happening around her but she ponders the candies that Tamako has given her that robbed her of her spirit-seeing abilities. Rinne kneels down in front of her, causing her to trip over his spirit body. Sensing that he must be there, Sakura returns the rest of Tamako's candies to Rinne.

Chapter 102: 雨の中の子犬
Ame no naka no koinu

(The Puppy in the Rain)
Rinne bangs away at the ceiling of his home with Sakura helping him to board up some of the leaks. A young man named Ken Ameno comes to the door with a fairly unique problem- a small raincloud follows him around even indoors. Initially, the curse seems to have a connection with his dog, Bero, and soon the boy is recalling a memory from his childhood. As a child Ken and his friends found a puppy that they were supposed to take care of together. The boy was taken to an amusement park and left the puppy to fend for itself while he was gone. When Ken's family returned the puppy had vanished. Rinne uses some supernatural bath salts mixed with the phantom rainwater that is pouring on Ken's head to scry back in time and see what happened to the puppy. They watch as the little dog wandered into the road and was nearly hit by a car only to get adopted by a young girl who loved and cared for him. Rinne soon realizes that the rain is caused by Ken's own guilt over leaving the dog out in the rain all those years ago. A giant ghostly apparition of the puppy appears over the boys head and puts its paw on his shoulder, forgiving the boy of his burden and allowing him to finally move on.

  • Rinne's client, Ken Ameno (雨野ケン), is cursed by the rain. Approprietly enough the first kanji of his last name is "rain".
  • Ken's pet dog, Kotaro (小太郎) does not have a particularly unusual or telling name.
  • Bero (ベロ) means "tongue" in Japanese.
  • The pose Ameno twists into upon believing that Bero was hit by a car is meant to mimic Edvard Munch's painting The Scream.

Chapter 103: 貧乏蛾
Binbou ka

(Poverty Moth)
Shoma is dispatched by his elementary school teacher back to the world of the living to retrieve the souls of insects that have gone astray; particularly a poverty moth that has been flitting about. The moth in question settles in Rinne's house and while he tries to catch it a mysterious black cat leaps in and thwarts his plan. This well-dressed cat by the name of Kurosu looks to be Rinne's age and is actually Shoma's black cat by contract. He assists his young master in trying to catch the moth, while acting very much like his butler as well. It turns out this particular moth's dander is capable of bringing about grave poverty upon whomever gets dusted by it, therefore quite a bit of caution goes into trying to catch it. To help Shoma, Kurosu uses his a magic wand shaped like a cat's arm to cast a spell on Rinne and Rokumon making them believe their surroundings are all palatial and luxurious. This makes the moth flock to Rinne, believing him to be wealthy and in need of a come-down. With Rinne as bait, Shoma almost catches the moth, but Rokumon steps in and saves his master. Fighting back tears, Rinne spends 3,000 yen on a bug repellant to drive the moth towards Shoma and Kurosu so they'll be dusted with its moth dander, but they too avoid danger. Having had enough of Rinne's interference, Kurosu dons his gloves and prepares to fight Rinne seriously, only to realize that it is five o'clock and he is unwilling to work overtime. With only Shoma left, Rinne easily kicks the boy and the moth out of his house.

Notes:
  • This chapter features the first appearance of Kurosu.
  • Kurosu's frequent idea of stopping work at exactly 5 o'clock has its roots in the concept of work reform (働き方改革). The ideas were originated in the first Shinzo Abe cabinet in 2006, with the concept of the "Labor Big Bang" () but would not fully take hold until 2018-2020 in the 3rd Abe cabinet. The work reform movement had three main pillars that were as follows:
  • Pillar 1: Comprehensive and continuous promotion of work style reform ( revision of the Employment Measures Act )
  • Pillar 2: Correction of long working hours and realization of diverse and flexible working styles, etc. ( Revision of the Labor Standards Act , etc.)
  • Introduction of cap on overtime work
  • Measures to curb long working hours Partially compulsory to take annual paid leave
  • Review of the flextime system
  • Addition of work subject to the planning-type discretionary labor system
  • Establishment of the Advanced Professional System
  • Promoting the spread of the work interval system (revision of the Act on Special Measures Concerning Improvements in Setting Working Hours, etc. )
  • Strengthening industrial physicians and occupational health functions ( Occupational Safety and Health Law / Revision of the Pneumoconiosis Law )
  • Pillar 3: Ensuring fair treatment regardless of employment status
  • Provisions to eliminate unreasonable differences in treatment ( Act on Improvement of Employment Management for Part-Time Workers (Part-Time Labor Act)/ Revised Labor Contract Act )
  • Select either the equal/balanced treatment system or the labor-management agreement system with the dispatch destination (revision of the Law Concerning Ensuring Appropriate
  • Operation of Worker Dispatch Businesses and Protection of Dispatched Workers (Worker Dispatch Law))
  • Strengthening Accountability Regarding Treatment of Workers

(The Jealous Cat)
Rokumon presents Rinne with a wanted poster for a cat spirit that has recently been haunting the world of the living, with the prize being a large cache of catfood. Meanwhile Sakura and her friends are visiting a pet store where they see a sickly, mangy looking kitten. Sakura is the only one that can tell that the kitten is being haunted by the ghost of the plump kitty spirit, but Rokumon immediately arrives and frightens off the spirit. Upon its departure the little kitty is restored to good health and vitality. Rokumon diligently pursues that cat spirit only to be thwarted by Kurosu. Using his cat paw wand, he traps the ghost cat in a can of catfood and tries to escape using various magic tricks. Finally Rinne intercedes to help Rokumon and Kurosu agrees to turn over catfood can holding the spirit. Of course the can is a fake, and after a shove from Rinne causes dozens of cans to spill out, each is revealed to have a fake cat spirit inside them. Rokumon turns into a kitten to lure out the real spirit which promptly settles over him, resulting in him taking on a sick and mangy appearance. Rinne quickly nabs the ghost cat and he and Rokumon share in the catfood reward.

Chapter 105: お化け屋敷半額!!
Obakeyashiki hangaku

(The Half-Price Haunted House)
Rinne listens to a girl who comes in claiming a haunted house exhibit at a theme park really is haunted. As Rinne listens to her story an arrow flies through a portal from the afterlife carrying a message from Ageha. Tsubasa also decides to invite Sakura to the haunted house in hopes that she will get scared and cling to him in the dark. When Rinne arrives he finds a suspicious demashigami panda holding a sign outside advertising that the ride is half-price for couples. Ageha arrives so that she can be Rinne's date for the afternoon, but when he sees Sakura arrive with Tsubasa he hides and watches them from afar. Unfortunately for Tsubasa Sakura has seen so many real ghosts that the fake ones on the ride don't bother her in the least. Sakura and Tsubasa quickly realize that some of the ghosts are real though. In the excitement Tsubasa slyly reaches over and takes Sakura's hand, but before he can bask in his triumph, Rinne hits him in the head with a shoe from his hiding spot. Tsubasa recognizes the shoe and tosses it back and Rinne, knocking him unconcious. Ageha grabs Rinne and carries him off, leaving Rokumon behind. When he wakes he is in the bottom of a dry well with Ageha trying to seduce him. She explains to Rinne that the haunted house pulls couple's souls from their body when they get too close to one another, which is what nearly happened to Tsubasa when he took Sakura's hand. Just as they make this realization, Tsubasa and Sakura peer down into the well and see Ageha and Rinne embracing.

Chapter 106: デートではない!
Deeto de wa nai!

(This Isn't A Date!)
Sakura stares down into the well at Rinne and Ageha who look as if they are snuggling up together. Ageha explains to Tsubasa that there was nothing untowards going on. As Rinne and the others set out to deal with the spirits that are haunting the haunted house, Ageha fouls things up by summoning a field of tombstones in order to separate everyone and give her another shot at getting Rinne alone. Rokumon arrives to try and help his master, but Tsubasa uses the confusion to try and get some time with Sakura. While separated from the others, Ageha and Rinne stumble upon a group of damashigami and easily dispatch them. With the damashigami defeated, their hold over the spirits that are haunting the ride is dispatched. Sakura quickly rushes off to find Rinne, but Ageha uses another of her devices to set up a shadowy cloak to help her escape with Rinne. Luckily Ageha trips and Rinne manages to escape from her in the darkness while Tsubasa accidently takes his place. In the darkness, Ageha and Tsubasa embrace while thinking they are actually hugging Rinne and Sakura respectively. As soon as they embrace their souls are pulled from their body, just like all the other couples who fell prey to the haunted house. Rinne easily finds the damashigami responsible, clonks him on the head and puts Ageha and Tsubasa's souls back in their bodies.

Chapter 107: アツアツ
Atsuatsu

(Piping Hot)
On a hot summer day, Sakura wanders downtown with her friends when suddenly a large, black obelisk looms behind her. Meanwhile at Rinne's clubhouse home the temperature is sweltering as he is too poor to afford an air conditioner. After he and Rokumon struggle with the heat Sakura arrives to tell him about her discovery. She brings Rinne to the obelisk which turns out to be a refridgerator. The store owner happily gives it to Rinne who is overjoyed to have such a luxury item, but when he gets it back home he opens it to find a snow spirit living inside. The spirit refuses to let Rinne put anything inside the refridgerator, proclaiming her love of piping hot foods like crab and nabe that she can make with the leeks she is clutching. After she retreats back inside her fridge the entire house begins to freeze over, much to Rinne's happiness. Finally though the snow and ice become too much and everyone agrees to cook nabe with the wintery spirit. Rokumon fetches the Illusionary Lantern to try and soothe the spirit, but she is more interested in shooting the core of her leeks at everyone else as she clutches them between her chopsticks. It seems the steaming insides are much too hot for her to enjoy, so Sakura gives her a snowball to eat. Pleased by this the snow spirit is happily exorcised.

Chapter 108: さまようスイカ
Samayou suika

(The Prowling Watermelon)
A watermelon salesman is found knocked out and after a spate of similar crimes a group of watermelon salesmen come to Rinne to ask for his help dealing with the culprit. They describe the criminal as a watermelon wearing a cloak, and that night it appears once more while Rinne is guarding their outdoor watermelon stand. The odd creature arrives wearing a blindefold and swinging a stick to smash people with. Rinne manages to disarm the watermelon, but violently knocks it back causing the melon to get smashed to pieces. Just before this, a spirit leaps from the fruit and flies away. A group of boys argue over the cause of the watermelon spirit, and Rinne follows one of them back to the local hospital where a young girl lays in bed. Rinne sees spiritual fetters streaming from her body and deduces that she must have some ties to the possessed watermelon creature. That night the watermelon creature emerges again, but this time Rinne manages to get it to break a melon with its stick. Having done so the girl's spirit pops out, pleased that she finally managed to smash a melon, which is a typical summertime game that she was missing out on due to her hospitalization. It seems settled until the desirous spirits of the other children start to pop out of the melon too, as it seems all of their desires were animating the melon ghost and not just the little girls. At the end of it all, Rinne is just happy that he gets to keep all the pieces of smashed melon.
