Kyokai no RINNE Vol 14

Chapter 129: 腰砕け坂の怪
Koshikudake zaga no kai

(The Spirit on Dead-Tired Hill)
While out jogging with her PE class one afternoon in preparation for an upcoming marathon Sakura comes across a group of boys from school who have all collapsed in the middle of the road. The spot where the others fell is at the bottom of a steep incline, said to be the hardest part of the marathon route. Upon closer inspection she finds handprints all over there faces where they have been slapped into unconciousness. Tsubasa soon arrives and both he and Sakura sense a spirtual presense in the area. Rinne is the next to arrive wearing his haori so that he is invisible to the rest of his gawking classmates. Rinne declares that he erected the barrier to prevent the students from climbing the hill and adding their negative feelings about the steep hill to the spirit who has made his residence there. He opens a small door in the barrier and discovers a large, demonic creature that has grown fat feasting on the student's auras. Rinne does his best to fight off the creature, but it continues to devour more and more negative auras. Rokumon arrives to try and pull Sakura away from the battle, but before they can flee they are shocked to see Rinne lay down in the street next to the demon, both of them kicking back under a futon to watch TV and eat snacks as the creature's embodied exhaustion has overcome Rinne. It seems absorbing all that negative energy has made the creature (and Rinne) lethargic and lazy, plus Rinne comments on the demon having better things than he does (a TV, refrigerator, etc). Soon, Tsubasa succumbs to the a case of the lazies and joins Rinne to read a book and play with his phone in the middle of the road leaving only Sakura and Rokumon to put things right. Using a massive bouncy ball provided by Rokumon, Sakura rolls it down the hill, purifying the demon by negating its lazy energy.

  • The name of the hill the students have to run up is Koshikudake (腰砕け). This is a term that means "faltering halfway through a task".
  • The shinigami tool that Rokumon uses to revive Rinne is called a "hazumidama capsule" (弾み玉カプセル). Hazumi can mean "bouncing" (as in bouncing ball which is what the item looks like) but it can also mean "to stimulate" or "to become lively" which is what the ball is meant to cause Rinne to do.

It is Setsubun, the Japanese holiday when oni are driven from homes by throwing beans at them. Unfortunately mixed in with her masked classmates is a real oni, who only she can see. Thankfully Rinne arrives, but Sakura quickly realizes he is not there to fend off the oni but to pick up all the beans the children have tossed on the floor. Additionally the oni has a magic box which sucks away all the children's beans so they cannot throw them at him. Rokumon leaps into the path of the beans as they are being pulled into the box and swallows quite a few, but the box pulls him into it followed by Rinne and Sakura. Inside the box is a wasteland, but in the distance Rinne spots a doorway hovering in midair. He knocks through it and winds up in the oni's apartment where his wife and five children are waiting and looking miserable.

It seems that her soccer playing boyfriend, Taro, has become attracted to a strange girl with a flower in her hair named Renge. While he investigates the case, the girl arrives in Sakura's class revealing herself to be a transfer student. Renge seems rather gloomy to the normal viewer, but Tsubasa and Sakura see a Marilyn Monroe-like ghost hovering over her smiling brightly. Meanwhile Taro lurks behind the teacher's desk staring at the girl intensely. It seems this spirit is what causes boys to become infatuated with the new student. Outside in the hall Rinne and Taro's girlfriend watch the events unfolding. Later that afternoon Tsubasa tries to exorcise the spirit, but the soccer player gets in the way, preventing him from using his sacred ashes. Renge is hounded by boys and showered with gifts and the ghost uses the young woman to lure male students to the roof of the school. The soccer player follows her up, and as the ghost helps her hover over the edge, he leaps out to grab her. Thankfully Rinne flies to the rescue and pushes him back onto solid ground before he can plummett to his death. Renge escapes however and catches Sakura walking home alone as dark clouds begin to fill the sky.

Almost as soon as Renge enters Sakura's room however she realizes that the Exorcism Hourglass that Sakura uses to keep ghosts from filling her house is nearby. Rinne rushes to the scene, only to find two of Tsubasa's sacred ash capsules broken on the ground nearby. It seems Renge sent Tsubasa a letter, luring him out and then disposing of him. Rinne slaps him around to try and wake him, when an ominous figure appears behind him - Renge. She attacks and Rinne swipes the flowers from her hair revealing two small oni horns. Renge too has a scythe and Rinne rushes to attack her, but halts his blade upon realizing that she is distracting him while she lures all the boys through a portal to the afterlife. It seems this oni is a demashigami. Meanwhile Renge has placed Sakura into a pocket dimension where she finds herself alone with Tsubasa's disembodied soul which is stuck inside a birdcage. Realizing that the Marilyn Monroe phantom is being attached to Renge by use of a mystical perfume, Rinne breaks the bottle on Tsubasa's head which lures all the boys previously attached to the oni to Tsubasa. With that he slaps an exit sticker on Tsubasa's back to make his soulless, unconcious body flee. As Rinne and Renge battle, the small room Sakura is stuck in is slowly crumbling.

(Aiming for the Top)
Rinne drops into the room, which is now just a tatami mat floating in space in time to save Sakura from Renge. The oni-girl quickly flips the table Rinne is standing on and then hits him in the head with a mallet before she begins to explain her connection to Sabato, Rinne's father. One her way to school one day she was knocked into a lake by a fleeing Sabato who had stolen food from a restaurant and was being pursued by its owner. After she explains the difficulty Sabato has placed upon her, Rinne bows down, subjugating himself before her, much to Sakura's surprise. Renge attacks and tries to use her fishing rod to remove Rinne's soul. Rinne tangles the line on his scythe and knocks Renge from the platform which starts to tumble through space and empties Rinne and Sakura in front of the school. Renge snags Rinne's haori, pulling it off of him in midair and stripping him of his ability to fly. He catches Sakura and has a rough landing, only to be trampled by all the school boys that are still chasing Tsubasa's souless body. Using her fishing pole, Renge pulls Rinne's haori back through the portal, preventing him from taking on his ghostly form. Together Rinne and Sakura rush back to his home and realize that Renge's store room where she is keeping all of her souls is literally right next to the room Rinne lives in. They knock her out and liberate the stolen souls including Tsubasa's, but the following day they realize Renge has decided to enroll at Sankai High.

As they sit and chat Rokumon makes tea for everyone using the powder given to him by the old lady cat. Just as they start to feel strange from drinking the tea, Renge arrives with the same elderly cat lady- her black cat. It turns out the tea makes anyone who drinks it do as they're told and Rokumon was forced to serve it to his friends. Renge's first command is for Tsubasa to beat up Rinne, which he promptly does. She then sends Rinne away and attaches her Marilyn Monroe spirit to Sakura which will make all the boys at school fall in love with her. Rika and Miho watch confused and helplessly as Sakura helps Renge lure the boys from the school into her clutches. Just then Rinne returns and helps free Sakura. Back at Rinne's apartment, he uses another brand of tea that frees them from Renge's clutches.
