Chapter 179: 黒猫こども会
Kuroneko kodomo kai

(The Black Cat Children's Association)
Rokumon is tasked with taking Kuroboshi III to the Black Cat Children's Association meeting in the afterlife and ensure he does not get into any trouble. When he arrives he introduces the little cat to Suzu and Oboro, but Kuroboshi's grandfather promptlypops out and warns Rokumon to keep his grandson out of trouble. Kuroboshi III tells the elder cats that he hopes to learn from them prompting Suzu to laugh that he's a simple beginner. As the meeting gets underway, the black cats are told they will participate in a stamp rally- running around a course collecting stamps in a book in order to win a huge supply of cat food. Oboro, Kuroboshi III, Suzu and Rokumon are all placed on a team together and while the later two cat desperately want to win the prize due to their impoverished status, Oboro is rather indifferent due to his great wealth. As everyone makes preparations for the rally, the announcer informs them that the judge of the competition will be none other than Kurosu. Kuroboshi III is very enthusiastic as the race begins but soon ghosts begin to pop up and the frightened cat flees in the opposite direction. Kurosu announces that if a single member of the four-cat team retires then the entire team is disqualified. Kuroboshi III begs to be allowed to quit, but Rokumon will have none of it. Suzu manages to frighten Kuroboshi III back onto the course, but gets carried away as she continues to try to frighten him. Oboro decides to bury Kuroboshi III so that the team can continue on without him and collect their stamps, but they run into a treacherous trap- a road filled with bowls and boxes perfect for cats to sleep in. Suzu immediately hops into a bowl and trips up Oboro and Rokumon, accidently knocking them out. Kurosu begins to give them a ten-count and nearly disqualifies the team until Kuroboshi III tunnels over and knocks out Kurosu before he can finish his count. Kuroboshi III soon panics again and knocks over a stall. Among the wreckage Oboro finds a stamp and uses it to cheat by marking every page in the team stamp book. It seems as if the team will sail to victory but Kurosu knocks the cats into a freezing pool of water and once they manage to escape the lure of a warm kotatsu is simply too inviting.

Notes:
  • Kyokai no RINNE did not run in the next issue, instead Rumiko Takahashi published the special chapter of Inuyasha: Since Then to help raise funds for the victims of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami and Fukushima nuclear power plant meltdown.
  • The event the black cats are asked to participate in is a "stamp rally" (スタンプラリー). This is a game where people travel around (sometimes from train station to train station or tourist destinations within a city) collecting stamps. The first person to fill their book and arrive at the finish line is declared the winner.
  • The ghost that Suzu brings out to torment Kuroboshi III is Sadako Yamamura (山村貞子) from the Ring films. In the manga she comes out of a television set like in the films, in the anime she is shown coming out of a pipe.
  • After the cats abandon Kuroboshi III they run through a series of torii gates (鳥居). These are Shinto archeways typically painted a reddish-orange color. They mark the entrance to a sacred space.
  • The ghost that gives the cats their first stamp has on a "ghost hat". These have many names but you can learn more about them at our Rumic Mini video on the topic.
  • The onomatopoeia circling the cats after they fell in the ice water is "buruburu" (ぶるぶる) which means "to shiver".
  • The table that the cats succumb to in the end is a kotatsu (こたつ). It has a heater beneath it so that the space under the blanket is very warm and comfortable. Here the cats make the sound "gorogoro" (ゴロゴロ) which is purring.

Chapter 180: 呪われたバレンタイン
Norowareta barentain

(Accursed Valentine)
Sakura arrives at school amid an uproar, it seems that all the Valentine's chocolate has been stolen, leaving nothing for the girls to give to their beaus. Tsubasa only becomes concerned when he realizes Sakura's has been taken too leaving nothing for him. Outside Rinne and Rokumon check the weather hutch and find dozens of boxes of Valentine's chocolate stuffed inside. Rinne and Rokumon can hardly believe their luck as they point out that chocolate and mayonnaise are the two staples of a high-calorie diet. It is not long before Sakura and Tsubasa discover Rinne's cache of chocolates, and Sakura sees her own box among Rinne's assortment. When Sakura reclaims her candy Tsubasa is crushed to receive only a little piece while Rokumon gets a fairly decent sized bag. Rinne meanwhile gets a boxfull of homemade candy and can hardly believe his luck. Rinne is disappointed (and Tsubasa thrilled) when Sakura reveals that her mother made the chocolates since she felt sorry for impoverished Rinne. Tsubasa gets Sakura to confirm that she made his single piece which suddenly means much more to him that Rinne's entire pile. Before Tsubasa can eat his candy the giant ghost of a student plucks it out of his hand and swallows it. Everyone watches as he devours the pile of candy and then begins to relate his tragic tale. When he was alive he was much thinner and says that few people ever paid him any attention. One day he heard that the girls were planning on purchasing chocolate for all the boys on Valentine's Day, guaranteeing he would get some chocolate for the first time. Unfortunately he became sick and forced himself to go to school only to discover that he was still overlooked while everyone else was given chocolates. After his death he would return each Valentine's Day to steal candy. Sakura tries to help the ghost pass on by giving him the chocolates her mother made from Rinne, this greatly upsets Rinne who promptly cries bloody tears at the loss of his sweets. The ghost devours all of Rinne's candy but then says he cannot pass on because the chocolate were not made especially for him. As the ghost flees from Rinne he sees other unpopular boys who are happy to have chocolates of their own. Their happy feelings helps to lift the ghost's spirits and allows him to pass on. Later to make up for giving away his candy, Sakura makes Rinne some homemade mayonnaise which he does not quite feel as excited about.

Chapter 182: だれ!?
Dare!?

(Who!?)
Sakura, Rika and Miho visit a school friend named Hinagata's house. Hinagata's family seems quiet wealthy and the girls all admire her collection of dolls. Before they can head up to Hinagata's room, Sakura hear's a voice in her head ask "who!?" and as she turns around the stand with all the dolls is knocked over. Sakura brings Rinne in to consult and Hinagata explains that the dolls have toppled off their stands before. Sakura tells Rinne that she heard a female voice whisper "who!?" when she arrived, and so Rinne rents a tiny doll microphone from the spirit world. The male and female doll pass the microphone back and forth, demanding to know who one another are. Sakura intercedes, telling the little dolls that they are one another's spouses which they both deny, stating they do not even know one another. Suddenly Hinagata remembers something that happened the previous year on Hinamatsuri, that an alley cat had gotten into the house and knocked the dolls over. The cat broke the dolls, knocking their heads and arms and other bits to pieces. Hinagata took the dolls to a neighborhood shop to repair them, later explaining that she never noticed anything was amiss because all the doll's faces look identical (which offends the little dolls). They tell her that they both watched her grow up, each year seeing her on Hinamatsuri when they were taken out of their boxes and put on display, though the male doll mistakes Sakura for Hinagata. Rinne tries to straighten things out by tying tying a Red Thread of Fate to the female doll's hand so that it will tie itself to the partner she is destined to be with. Surprisingly it ties itself to the male doll that she claims not to recognize. Soon they realize that though the bodies are the originals, the faces are no longer associated with the partner that they remember. Unfortunately the shop that did the restoration has closed, the original parts are likely long gone. When this reality sets in, the dolls begin fighting one another again and Rinne compares them to professional wrestlers, so Hinagata suggests making little wrestling masks for them to wear so they will not be distracted by one another's unfamiliar faces. When the dolls refuse, Hinagata tells them that they are leaving her no choice other than to sell them or throw them away. Ultimately the stay cat strikes again, dragging a male doll from next door over to the house and revealing what had happened to the missing head from last year- the cat broke their display as well and the heads got mixed up at the repair shop. The heads are fixed and the dolls reunited with their proper homes.

Kinun wakkusu

(Fortune Wax)
Rinne visits Raito and Refuto, asking them if they have finished repairing his scythe, before Raito informs him that it was stolen. She explains that Refuto was applying their new fortune wax on the blade when suddenly a hand reached through a portal and snatched the scythe away. Refuto explains that the wax would help Rinne make money and bring him good fortune. Raito hands Rinne a string with a yen coin tied too it, telling Rinne it will help him track the thief. In the real world Sakura finds Sabato with Rinne's scythe. He pokes it underneath a vending machine and the lost coins magnetically cling to Rinne's blade. Rinne and Rokumon try to steal the blade back, especially once they realize it can collect coinage thanks to it's new wax coating. Sabato fends them off and slips away to a nearby temple, using the scythe to steal the money from an offering box. Refuto and Raito arrive and rub a dap of cleansing cream onto the blade, cancelling it's money attracting properties and offering to seal more of the cream to Rinne, but while they discuss it Sabato slips away once again. Walking to the store with a jar of carefully saved coins, Renge is happy that she can finally buy rice again as she curses Sabato, her good for nothing boss, who has not paid her salary. Sabato knocks the jar from her hand and immediately uses the scythe to pick up all the coins just as Rinne arrives and tries use the cleansing cream to remove the scythe's new power. When Sabato swings the scythe, Rinne catches it between his hands and all of the coins begin to fall away thanks to him rubbing the cleansing cream into the scythe. Refuto and Raito arrive to try to sell more of the cream to Rinne, but the young shinigami sends them flying along with Sabato. Initially Rinne believes everything is settled, but Sabato soon returns after coating his own body with the fortune wax. All the coins begin to fly towards him, but he did not realize how much the coins would sting. Rinne compares it to being hit with a shotgun blast as Sabato sceams and cries as he is hit repeatedly by the coins.

Chapter 184: 卒業式で
Sotsugyoshiki de

(At Graduation)
Arriving at school one morning, Sakura notices a ghost standing by the front entrance, her hands are clutched together as if she is holding something small between them. The ghost girl leans forward silently as a young couple walks through her as they make plans to go see a movie the following Saturday. The couple are two second year students, Shin Munakata and Mayu Katano. They both go to Rinne, complaining that they have felt something heavy in their chests as if they were cursed. Rinne uses as "Sense Coating Spray" that causes ghostly objects to materialize. After spraying it on Shin, a series of identical buttons appear hovering around his chest. Sakura points out that the buttons are clustered around where the second button of where his uniform would have been. In Japanese schools many boys give away the second button as a sign of their love for a girl as it is the button closest to their hearts. Mayu flees upon hearing this, assuming that the phantom buttons meant that he had many sweethearts he pined for. The boy swears he knows nothing about it, but thinks he may have forgotten something. Elsewhere the ghost girl watches Mayu, Rinne quickly rushes over and puts his haori on the ghost, causing her to materialize. She quickly knocks it off and passes into Mayu's body so Rinne can not reapply it. As soon as she does this a button materializes in Mayu's hand causing her to panic. Mayu reveals that she was close friends with a girl named Beniko who attended the same after school club as she did. Mayu explains that they used to tease one another about who would get Shin's second button which lead to playful fisticuffs. Eventually she explains that they were both members of the full-contact karate club, explaining their physical confrontations. It turns out that on graduation day, Beniko asked to meet Shin, but before she could Mayu found him and accidentally knocked him out by shoving him into a tree, which explains his inability to remember what happened that day. When Shin woke, he found that his second button was already gone. Using Rinne's haori, Beniko materializes and explains that she took Shin's button while he was unconscious, despite knowing that he really had feelings for Mayu the entire time. She has been trying to give the button back to the two of them this entire time resulting in the phantom buttons being placed on the pair. Before leaving she gives Shin a playful shove and accidentally knocks him out once again.

Chapter 185: 強制質入れ
Kyosei shichiire

(Forced Pawning)
Rinne receives a letter from the Shinigami Alumni Association in his weather hutch, but he must pay a 3,000 yen fee in order to participate which he says is unacceptable. Later that day Masato arrives at school looking battered and walks up to Rinne, slapping him across the face with three 1,000 yen bills. Masato seems off his game, a simple nudge from Rinne sends him flying out the window and onto the running track below. Masato goes back to Rinne's apartment and explains his situation. It seems he was laying traps for the red-headed shinigami when a new shinigami arrived and stole his wings by sucking them into a jar. The shinigami told Masato that he wanted 3,000 yen otherwise he would pawn the wings he stole. The mystery shinigami left behind a pawn shop receipt and the bill so that Masato can reclaim his wings if he raises enough money. Sakura looks at the pawn ticket and realizes that it has Rinne's name listed as the borrower which Masato wrote in place of his own name. He tries to give Rinne 3,000 yen to make him go get the wings back but Rinne refuses until Rokumon mentions they might be able to buy the wings back when they go on sale and keep the difference for themselves. Everyone travels through the spirit road and arrives in front of "Hotel the Beyond". When Rinne enters a beautiful black cat tells him there is an entrance fee of 3,000 yen. It seems the exchange is being held at the alumni meeting Rinne was originally invited to. The shinigami who stole Masato's wings spots Rinne, but Masato immediately tries to attack him. Of course all of Rinne's old elementary school classmates at the alumni meeting immediately attack Masato upon realizing a devil has intruded on their festivities. The shinigami explains that he did all of this to cover Rinne's alumni membership fee, but Rinne feels guilty about the way it was done. He tries to use the money to buy back Masato's wings, but the other shinigami insists Rinne must recall his name before he'll give the wings back. Rinne tries to stall but it soon becomes clear that he does not recall the shinigami's name. Rinne says that they were only in sixth grade together, but the shinigami clarifies that they were in the same classes from first grade all the way through sixth. It seems this was all part of the shinigami's plan to humiliate Rinne. Meanwhile Masato is trying to sneak back into the hotel in a laundry cart.

Chapter 186: 恐怖の野外実習
Kyoufu no yagai jisshuu

(The Fear of Outdoor Training)
The mystery boy once again pushing Rinne to tell him his name, but Tsubasa and Sakura realize that none of Rinne's other former classmates recall the boy either. The boy then tells Rinne he'll give him a hint and suddenly a pair of looming eyes appear in the darkness of a portal opening over Rinne's head. Suddenly a devil appears over Rinne which seems to jog Rinne's recollection. Four years prior Rinne and his classmates were taken on a field trip for some outdoor devil-hunting training. Devil balloons were released in the woods, that happen to resemble the devil that the nameless shinigami boy has brought to the reunion. As Rinne thinks back he recalls teaming up with a geeky little boy in thick glasses. When Rinne attacked the devil balloon, it sprung to life thanks to a sensor inside and started to inflate larger and larger. The little glasses wearing boy panicked and did not help Rinne dispatch the devil before it popped. Rinne quickly realizes the little boy with the thick glasses is the young man who's name he cannot recall. It turns out the now handsome shinigami is named Matsugo, and he wants Rinne to never forget his name again. The devil balloon attacks Rinne, and when he tries to use his scythe against it, Matsugo uses his bottle to suck it away from Rinne, just as he used it to steal Masato's wings. Matsugo threatens to pawn off Rinne's scythe, commenting that it is not worth very much. Rinne thinks back, trying to recall what he did that would have upset Matsugo so much that he would want revenge, but he recalls always been friendly to the little glasses-wearing boy. Rinne relates that the boy would ask to eat lunch and go to the bathroom together, which Rinne always agreed to. Tsubasa comments that he seemed more like a little girl with behavior like that. Matsugo claims that Rinne's kindness all changed on the day the devil balloon exploded. After that the red-headed shinigami had the balloon pop on him, Matsugo claims that he was kicked into a river by Rinne and threatened to forget it ever happened after the teacher pulled him out. Rinne claims he has no memory of it, but as they talk of the past the devil balloon is swelling up with Rinne in it's clutches. Matsugo tells him he had better apologize or suffer another exploding devil balloon.

Notes:
  • The devil balloon in this chapter resembles Tsunodaishi. It is perhaps a reference, but also it may be a coincidence and merely worth mentioning the vague resemblance. Tsunodaishi (角大師), according to legend, is actually the 10th century monk Ryogen (良源) the head abbott of the temple Enryakuji. It was said that Ryogen was able to turn into this creature, alternatively described as an oni or a yaksha in order to banish evil-doers. His demonic alias, Tsunodaishi, means "Great Horned Master" and appears on ofuda paper talismen. The Tendai sect still distribute ofuda featuring Tsunodaishi.
  • While this is a questionable reference to Tsunodaishi, the creature is definitely referenced in chapter 76 and chapter 200.
  • As a child the Matsugo is wearing glasses that are shown to have spirals in them. In Japan these are known as "bottle bottom glasses" (瓶底眼鏡). The glasses are said to look like the "bottom of a cow milk bottle" (牛乳瓶の底).
  • Rinne's nickname for Matsugo was "ミニメガネ ちび男" (Mini-Megane Chibio). This means "small glasses little man".

Chapter 187: 忘れ玉
Wasure dama

(The Forgetfulness Ball)
Matsugo continues to confront Rinne about his betrayal from years ago, which Rinne insists he does not have any memory of. After his inflatable devil explodes, knocking Rinne out briefly he explains to everyone else that after elementary school he enrolled in an elite junior high school and switched from his Coke-bottle glasses to wearing contacts. Matsugo explains to everyone how he relentlessly tried to make himself over and improve himself after being humilitated by being knocked into the river by Rinne, leaving Tsubasa to wonder why his revenge is so effeminate. Rokumon asks Rinne what he remembers about the day he knocked Matsugo into the river and he explains that he bought a Forgetfulness Ball, which is a shinigami tool that allows you to write out a message, insert it into the ball and then eat it, causing you to forget whatever was written. Rinne apologizes, explaining he must have forgotten, but that is not good enough for Matsugo who throws a box of his childhood toys at Rinne, which includes and a photo album filled with pictures of he and and the red-headed shinigami. Suddenly Matsugo's black cat, Kuromitsu, arrives with a Remembrance Ball, a giant ball that will jog Rinne's memory when he is crushed beneath it. Rinne flees from the giant ball, not wishing to have it smash his head to bits. Rinne leaps to avoid the ball and retrieves his scythe from the jug Matsugo used to snatch it away. In the process Rinne knocks the ball towards Matsugo but leaps in to save him from being struck by it. As the ball hits Rinne his memory is jogged and he recalls what happened. When the inflatable demon exploded it knocked little Matsugo unconcious. As Rinne checked on him he realized that Matsugo had peed all over himself when he passed out and heard their class approaching. Rather than let his friend get embarrassed he threw him in the river and then told him to forget it ever happened. To ensure he never told anyone Rinne ate a Forgetfulness Ball in order to ensure he never remembered his friend peeing on himself. Upon hearing the truth, Matsugo feeds Rinne another Forgetfulness Ball to ensure he does not repeat this long-hidden secret. Deciding he must not live in the past, Matsugo shout out that he likes Rinne, leaving Tsubasa to wonder about the girlishness of Matsugo. Later Rinne finds Masato in the alleyway, admitting that he had forgotten all about him.

Chapter 188: ファンシーなチョーカー
Fanshii na choukaa

(Fancy Choker)
One afternoon Ageha purchases a choker at a fancy story in the afterlife. The clerk tells Ageha that whomever she gives it to will be together with her forever. Immediately she travels to Sankai High and tries to force the choker onto Rinne's throat, but the canny shinigami manages to block her. Later as Ageha shows off the collar, Rokumon tries it on and a demon's face suddenly pops out and hovers over it like a balloon tethered to a chain attached to the choker. The spirit allows Ageha to view the wearer on a monitor, thus allowing her to always be together with the wearer. When she tries to force the choker on Rinne again when Matsugo arrives and sucks the choker up into his bottle. Ageha is enraged when Kuromitsu only offers her 5,000 yen for the choker and she shouts that she paid 30,000 yen for it. Very quickly Ageha and Matsugo start to fight over Rinne. Finally Matsugo tires of arguing with Ageha and uses a spirit tool to blow a spirit solution soap bubble around her and pop it which teleports her back to the spirit realm. With Ageha gone Matsugo becomes excited about seeing Rinne's room and then asks if he can take a picture with him. Tsubasa tries to get to the bottom of Matsugo's feelings for Rinne and asks if he is in love with him. Matsugo brushes him off and insists that this is what friendship looks like. Kuromitsu explains that Matsugo has been working all these years to get over his awkwardness, but Tsubasa comments that he must not have any friends. Hearing this, Matsugo seals him in a bubble and sends him away as well. Thanks to Ageha's skill, she brings both herself and Tsubasa back from the spirit realm and promptly breaks Matsugo's jar so she can retrieve her choker. Matsugo tries to shame Ageha for stalking Rinne, but he promptly turns around and gives Rinne a present of his own- another choker that allows Matsugo to monitor Rinne. Rinne simply makes it into a dog collar, leaving Matsugo to monitor the dog instead.
