Kyokai no RINNE Vol 20

Chapter 189: 輪廻の輪一斎清掃
Rinne no wa issei seisou

(Cleaning the Wheel of Reincarnation)
Tamako is organizing the Wheel of Reincarnation Cleaning Day where young shinigami and their black cats come together to scrub the massive wheel. She warns the shinigami that the wheel is still operational and accepting spirits for reincarnation as they clean it, so they must be very careful less they accidently get reincarnated in the process of trying to clean it. Rinne is frustrated that they are made to do such dangerous work without being paid, but the promise of a delicious barbeque lunch is enough to entice him. Soon Ageha and Matsugo arrive to help clean the wheel, and Matsugo promptly shoves Ageha towards the wheel. She very nearly passes through the entrance gate, but thankfully an elderly spirit pushes her away, telling her she cannot skip ahead of him. Kain arrives to supervise the work and promptly gets onto the group of shinigami for talking rather than working. Matsugo immediately scoffs at Kain, calling him a mere bureaucrat, and Kain seems surprised upon seeing Matsugo's uniform, which marks him as an elite student. Elsewhere Renge arrives and evades the security checkpoint where she is supposed to turn her scythe in for a scrub brush. She knocks out the security guard and she and Sabato steal all the checked shinigami scythes. Tamako happens upon her son and tries to prevent him from escaping with his stolen goods. At the wheel Kain complains about the poor cleaning job Rinne and the others are doing, while ignoring the fact that his black cat, Suzu, is spraying graffiti on the wheel instead of helping clean it. Sabato arrives carrying the stolen scythes and Renge immediately pretends she has nothing to do with him so as to avoid Kain finding out she is actually a demachigami. Matsugo is shocked to learn that Rinne's father is a criminal and vows to do his best to support Rinne through this troublesome news. Tamako sends Sabato flying towards the wheel, hoping he'll get pulled in and reincarnated, but once again the elderly spirits knock him away just as he is about to be pulled in. Ultimately the wheel is in worse shape than it was when the cleaning began, it is left covered in Suzu's graffiti and scratched by the falling scythes dropped by Sabato. Tamako decides that they should call professional cleaners instead and everyone else enjoys the barbeque dinner set aside for them, save for Rinne who is caught by Matsugo to take photos together.

Chapter 190: 客が来ない店
Kyaku ga konai mise

(The Shop Without Customers)
Walking down the street after school Sakura notices a store front with a strange aura. Checking inside she finds a ghostly-looking man who's ghastly appearance frightens Rika and Miho. It seems that customers have had their legs attacked when they visit, and after Rinne arrives and uses a ghost paintball he finds the culprit- a mean ghostly canine who likes to bite people's legs. Rinne straps a pair of magical 3-D glasses, called "Memory Glasses" to the dog's head and makes him visualize his owner, who greets the dog as Jason. Unfortunately, even the sight of his master does not help the dog to pass on. Frustrated, Rinne purchases a single-use spirit pathway and tries to coax the dog through it. Instead the dog attacks the paper tube and tears it up, refusing to be sent along to the afterlife. Refusing to be beaten, Rinne purchases a channeling doll and plugs it into the dog's 3-D glasses in order to summon a physical approximation of the dog's master once more. The dog is overjoyed at the appearance of his owner, but when he leaps on the inflatable channeling doll it bursts, shocking the dog into thinking it has just killed its master. Rinne's bills for all these destroyed tools is quickly adding up, when suddenly an old man wanders into the restaurant. The dog is overjoyed to see his now elderly master and the two are reunited finally. Unfortunately for the store owner, his naturally haunted appearance still kills any business he may get now that the dog has been exorcised.

Chapter 191: 彼女の連れて
Kanojo no tsurete

(Take the Girl)
Matsugo tells Rinne that he'll be attending Sankai High as an exchange student along with one other selected student. Rinne tries to explain that it would be impossible for Matsugo to attend school with him as Sankai is a school for humans, but Matsugo simply responds that he bribed the office in charge of such matters so that he would be allowed to go abroad to the human world. Later Rinne walks with Rokumon, frustrated that he is going to have to deal with the clingy Matsugo at school now. Rokumon dashes off, telling Rinne he has a good idea and returns a short time later with Sakura in tow. She volunteers to help Rinne with the school exchange meetings since Matsugo mentioned it would involve two students on his end. Rokumon explains that when Matsugo shows up and sees that Sakura is with Rinne he'll get the message and stop being such a pest. That night Sakura happily thinks about getting the chance to go out with Rinne, knowing that they are going to be play-acting a bit, yet still looking forward to spending time with him. The fated day arrives and Rinne and Sakura arrive at Matsugo's school in the afterlife. Rinne tells Matsugo that he has met Sakura before but he would like to formally introduce them. Just as Rinne is about to tell Matsugo that Sakura is his girlfriend, Matsugo starts banging a gong so he does not have to hear this tragic news. When Rinne tries to tell him again Matsugo begins jackhammering. Out of nowhere a prim looking blonde student appears, laughing at Matsugo and telling him he's been dumped. Kuromitsu, Matsugo's black cat, explains that this girl is Matsugo's classmate Anju. The students all start their orienteering, a game where students pass through certain check-points as they make their way towards a goal. As they start out, Matsugo calls Sakura "Rinne's girlfriend", surprising Rinne that he heard was he was trying to tell him. Matsugo pretends like his feelings are hurt but says it is an honor to meet Sakura which elicits laughter from Anju who has followed the group. Anju seems to hang back, hearing everything from a distance and letting out her cackling laugh. Continuing on together, the foursome break up into pairs as they row across the river. Of course Matsugo pairs with Rinne, which seems to anger Anju who says she wants to kill the red-headed shinigami, but is vague when Sakura asks her if she likes Matsugo. In the other boat Rinne looks disappointed and sits quietly reading the map. Much to his surprise he realizes that the shrine at the end has a variety of cheap amulets he can get for free. Rinne thanks Matsugo for bringing him along, and of course Matsugo misunderstands this as some sort of romantic or friendly gesture. Anju sees Rinne and Matsugo holding hands and immediately attacks them as Rinne grabs Sakura and flees, telling her that there are free shinigami tools to be had. Matsugo stares at the fleeing Rinne when Anju comments that the two seem to be in the throes of passion Matsugo agrees. It turns out this is the first conversation she has ever had with the boy and she is overjoyed though her barely notices her.

Chapter 192: 金なんだ
Kane nan da

(Money?)
With Sakura at his side, Rinne rushes along, hoping to complete the orienteering mission and win the shinigami tools. Matsugo and Anju watch from behind a tree as Rinne and Sakura hold hands, prompting Matsugo to dash ahead and snatch Rinne's head to lead him along towards the goal. Leading Rinne and Sakura through the woods, Matsugo attempts to show the red-headed shinigami a shortcut, but winds up throwing him off a cliff. It turns out all of this is an elaborate ruse dreamed up by Matsugo who has his black cat, Kuromitsu dumping rocks from on high. He takes this opportunity to "follow" Rinne down the cliff while Anju remains behind to interrogate Sakura about her relationship with Rinne. Matsugo finds Rinne unconscious halfway down the cliff, but when he hears Rokumon and Sakura calling for their lost friend he knocks him further down and out of their sight so that he can help him on his own. As he finds Rinne and they start to ascend the cliff, Sakura spots him and starts to call out only to be stopped by Anju. When asked why she stopped her, Anju nervously makes an excuse, saying she did not want them to know they were near. At that moment Matsugo tries to test Rinne and asks him what it is about that he likes about Sakura. Rinne answers that she is kind like an angel, which Sakura overhears. She thinks to herself that even though she believes he is lying to keep up the act, she's happy he said it. When Matsugo asks what about her is kind, Rinne explains that she gives him food and pays for things for him. Matsugo is overjoyed, believing it is merely money that Rinne is after. A sudden rainstorm breaks out and Matsugo takes Rinne to a mountain villa to wait it out why the shinigami worries about Sakura being stuck outside in the rain somewhere. Just as Matsugo declares that the god of friendship is smiling down upon them, he realizes that Sakura and Anju have arrived at the villa as well, destroying his alone time with his friend. Sakura tells Rinne that he should go on ahead when the rain stops to ensure he gets his charm tools, and while Rinne admits that he does want the charms, he tries to tell Sakura that going with her is more important. Instead she tells Matsugo to go with Rinne, which thrills the young man. Sakura explains that Matsugo seems wealthy and that money was what Rinne seemed more interested in. When Rinne tries to explain Sakura calmly tells him she's not angry, but Rinne can tell she is very upset. When the rain stops Matsugo drags Rinne away, leaving Sakura and Anju behind. Unfortunately when they arrive at the temple they are told that they ran out of charms.

Chapter 193: 惜しいのか
Oshiinoka

(How Disappointing)
Sakura thinks back on what she overheard Rinne saying to Matsugo, taking his words to mean that he was simply using her for her money. Sakura is lost in thought until Anju mentions that she has been tracking Matsugo using a hair she found and placed in her tracking fireball. The nondescript black hair leads them to Kuromitsu instead who is found relaxing poolside. Staring into the pool Sakura notices the spirits taking a test, which Anju explains as being "examination spirits". Anju explains that the pool is something like a washing machine for souls where they are purified after arriving at the Wheel of Reincarnation in the interim between their rebirth. It seems a crack has formed and some of these spirits has escaped into the Kuromitsu's swimming pool. Anju decides that dealing with these lost spirits will just take a moment before they can return to their search for Matsugo. Elsewhere Matsugo is entertaining Rinne at a resort, thinking that he can buy his friendship since he casually mentioned liking Sakura's company due to her willingness to pay for things for him. Outside the window, Rinne and Matsugo see a tornado of energy whipping up as Anju gets herself in over her head. As things go from bad to worse as she tries to deal with the lost spirits. Rinne intercedes, but soon realizes he has to use his school-success charm and toss it in the water in order to purify the ghosts. After wasting his charm, the ghosts are helped, but Rinne, after all his effort to get the dinky charm is left empty-handed once again.

Chapter 194: 桜の機嫌
Sakura no kigen

(Sakura's Mood)
Sakura, Rinne, Matsugo and Anju continue on to the third stage of their orienteering fieldtrip in order to gain the good-relationship charm that Rinne hopes to acquire. Marching along the sky suddenly fills with spirit path fireworks, which pops and fills the sky with notes explaining that the road to the shrine that holds the good-relationship charm was closed due to falling rocks, and that the competitors should pass through the spirit road portals to reach the shrine. Rinne immediately runs off with Sakura, and a few minutes later while sitting on a bench with her curses himself for not being able to smooth things over regarding what he said about liking her because of her money. Matsugo agonizes aloud, wondering why Rinne would run away with Sakura, while Anju pointlessly tries to tell him that the two of them obviously want to be alone together. Sakura asks Rinne why they are sitting and resting if there is a danger of the charms all getting claimed once again. Rinne tries to tell Sakura that he thinks that she has misunderstood something, but she immediately tosses Rinne's words back at him calmly, telling him that he said he wanted to be around her due to his debts and her buying food for him. Sakura cooly tells Rinne that its fine and she understands before standing up to leave. Just then Matsugo, Rokumon, Kuromitsu and Anju watch the pair from afar. Sakura remembers how excited she was at the prospect of pretending to be Rinne's girlfriend and then turns to give him the bento box she prepared for him the night before. She turns to give him her lunch box only to find that Rinne has disappeared and Matsugo chases after him. Anju expresses sympathy for Sakura, telling her that it seems Rinne chose the charm over her, but Sakura takes off as well in search of Rinne. Elsewhere it seems that Rinne did not flee to find the good-relationship charm, but instead fell into a spirit pathway on accident. Rinne winds up coming out right at the shrine he was trying to reach and gets trampled by the other shinigami who are rushing for the free charms. The announcer declares that there is only one charm remaining, causing Rinne to panic. He asks Rokumon what Sakura's mood was when he last saw her, and Rokumon, thinking about Sakura's stoic face says she looked pretty much the same as always. Rinne decides that he should happily dash for the last charm as Sakura sighs alone somewhere.

Chapter 195: つきあってません
Tsukiattemasen

(We're Not Going Out)
Rinne and Rokumon dash into the shrine hoping that they can grab the last good-relationship charm. Anju watches from behind a tree, shocked that Rinne would find a 500 yen charm more important that Sakura. Just as Rinne arrives at the counter and reaches for the charm a portal opens in front of him and he disappears inside. The same then happens to the subsequent arrivals, causing all of them to vanish. Rinne is emptied onto a cart filled with lost items and he immediately notices Sakura's backpack. Concerned that something may have happened to her he leaps into action, while elsewhere Sakura, Kuromitsu and Matsugo wander around the spirit pathway, lost and unable to find an exit back into the spirit realm. Sakura talks to Kuromitsu, voicing her disappointment that Rinne was more interested in the charm than her, though Matsugo pretends to empathize all the while celebrating that Rinne and Sakura clearly are not that close to one another. When Matsugo celebrates Sakura comes clean and admits that she and Rinne were never actually going out in the first place. As soon as she says it, Rinne arrives with her backpack in tow and Sakura immediately marches off unable to face him. Rokumon tells Rinne that Sakura must feel as if she was being used by him, and Rinne calls out to Sakura that he knows he has become indebted to her. Without looking at him, Sakura tells Rinne that he did not follow her or eat the bento she made for him. Rinne holds up the backpack and shouts that he wants to eat it with her. As soon as Rinne says that a portal pulls them in and takes Sakura and Rinne to the shrine where he is able to claim the good-relationship charm. Matsugo and Kuromitsu appear as well, and Anju explains that the portals were all merged into one exit which causes a stream of other contestants to pour out, trampling Rinne and preventing him from claiming his charm. Rinne reassures Sakura that sharing the bento with her is more important that the charm, and the thinks to himself that Sakura is like a gentle angel after all. It turns out that Anju grabbed the relationship charm and they all sit down and enjoy a picnic with Rinne and Sakura. Matsugo excitedly whispers to Anju that Rinne and Sakura really are not a couple, but she is simply overjoyed that he is speaking to her while Rinne and Sakura enjoy their meal together.

Tsubasa explains that the ingrediants he needs are the hair of a shinigami as well as the fur from a black cat's tail. Rinne, never one to pass up an opportunity to make a little money happily agrees to help. Taking the list from Tsubasa, Rinne flies off in search of the other ingredients when he happens upon Renge. At Tsubasa's house Rinne erects a barrier to keep the shinigami out as Tsubasa begins the ritual to make the sacred ash. Sakura reads the instructions when suddenly Kain and Renge break through Rinne's barrier and fight with Rinne. Sakura finally interrupts, explaining that because of the old fashioned language used they all failed to realize that the process takes many days and ultimately left the shinigami hairless with little profits to show for it.

Chapter 197: 壁の中から。。。
Kabe no naka kara...

(Inside the Wall...)
Miho hurries into class, destressed about something that happened in her room the previous night. She was woken from sleep hearing something pounding against her wall. Sakura asks what is on the other side of the wall and Miho explains its an outer wall, there is no other room in the house from which the sound could be originating. Not only was there the strange thudding sound, but Miho also could hear heavy breathing that sounded like a man. Rinne excitedly volunteers to go home with Miho after school which immediately makes Tsubasa suspicious. Rinne received a note that an important spirit on the verge of reincarnation had escaped and a 5,000 yen rewards was being offered for anyone that could find it. In Miho's room they find hand prints on the wall, and using some special incense Rinne reveals the ghost of a sumo wrestler, Sandunokawazeki, pressing against the wall. Sakura realizes that the sound Miho heard was the sumo doing his stomps and slaps at night. While traveling through the spirit path it seems that he stomped on the ground and fell through back into the real world. When Rinne offers to take him back he admits that he is stuck inside Miho's wall, as the hole he created dumped him there. Renge appears with the intention of claiming the reward for herself as Rokumon protests that the reward is not hers to claim due to her status as a demashigami. Renge says the prize money will be hers regardless. As soon as the sumo hears talk of prize money he assumes he is in a competition and once Renge frees him from the wall he immediately starts fighting her. Tsubasa throws his sacred ashes at the sumo who retaliates with his ceremonial salt. Rinne has an idea and attacks the sumo himself, but the wrestler catches his scythe and begins to slap him, charging forward out of the portal as he presses his attack. Just then Rokumon emerges from the afterlife with a rented sumo circle which he drops on the floor. As Rinne stumbles into it, Rokumon pulls it forward causing the sumo to step out of bounds and for Rinne to win the match. After that the sumo is easily dispatched back to the afterlife. Unfortunately Rinne not only failed to get the reward due to using underhanded methods, but he was also out the cost of the sumo ring he rented.

Chapter 198: プチトマト食べ放題
Puchi tomato tabehoudai

(All You Can Eat Cherry Tomatoes)
Tamako gives Rinne a small cherry tomato plant that belonged to a recently deceased individual. Rinne is all too happy to get the plant, thinking it will provide him with some free food as it produces small tomatoes for him. As she leaves the plant with Rinne she gives him a set of small bottles that he must give to the plant once each day. Ten days later though the small tomatoes have yet to ripen and Rinne and Rokumon begin to become frustrated. Using a different fertilizer the tomatoes grow to a gigantic size, but before Rinne can slice one open it begins to attack him. The plant then steals away the tomato sauce pasta and tomato sauce hamburger steak Sakura brought for Rinne and devours it before vomiting tomato sauce in his face. Ageha arrives with tomato sauce pizza for Rinne and the plant once again eats and vomits it back up. The giant cherry tomato sparkles and Rokumon comments that the pizza seems to have purified the plant, allowing it to eat the ingredients and spitting out the tomato sauce. Rinne and Ageha continue to battle against the tomato plant, eventually knocking it through the wall of Rinne's apartment and into Renge's room where it devours the omelette she is about to eat. Rinne tries to slice the tomato plant but his scythe passes through it and Sakura points out that the plant must want to eat something good before it will pass on to the next world. Thankfully Tamako arrives and injects the plant with her special fertilizer, which she explains is a special "requiem fluid" acts as a spiritual anesthesia. The plant shrinks away and later Tamako delievers Rinne a bottle of ketchup, but Rinne complains that he has nothing to go with it.
