199: トンネルに何かいる
Tonneru ni nakika iru
(Something in the Tunnel)
On a trip to the seaside Sakura discovers a small tunnel that serves as a shortcut to the local inn where she is staying. The innkeeper, who as a large circle covering his face, explains to Sakura and her friends that no one can pass through the tunnel, some invisible force keeps attacking them. Later the girls go to investigate the tunnel when they see Tsubasa standing on the other side. He cheerfully tries to come through to greet the girls but halfway through he's attacked and tossed out, seemingly covered in blood. Rinne appears, chiding Tsubasa for being careless and explaining that the inn association hired him to come investigate. All the inn owners also bear circles on their face and look battered after having previously tried to pass through tunnel. Tsubasa wakes up and realizes he is not covered with blood but with some sort of black juice, prompting him to march back into the tunnel to have it out with whatever is hidden inside. Once again he is beaten up and thrown out, yet this time the spirit emerges from the tunnel- a giant octopus who's suction cups have left the circles on the faces of his victims. Rinne explains that if you understand an octopus' need to squeeze into enclosed spaces it's spirit should be easy enough to send off. He slips a single-use spirit path into an octopus pot but things do not play out as he has hoped. Instead the octopus sprays him with ink and smashes the pot. The innkeeper explains he once heard a story about an octopus that was caught and brought to the inn, but disappeared from the truck as it went through the tunnel. Rokumon is able to drag the octopus out of the tunnel and Rinne blocks him from fleeing back inside. As Tsubasa and Rinne battle against the giant octopus Sakura finds the dried up husk that was the octopi's body. They take the husk back to the ocean and dip it in. As soon as the octopus hits the water he comes back to life and sprays Rinne with ink as he swims away.

200: 別荘の悪霊
Bessou no akuryou
(Evil Spirit of the Villa)
The shinigami are sent to an abandoned seaside villa to investigate reports that is has become haunted and Rinne invites Sakura to come along with him. When they arrive at the beach it becomes obvious why he invited her- once again Matsugo wants to hang out with him. When Rinne tries to include Sakura, Matsugo frustrates his plans while Sakura, Ageha and, off in the distance, Anju all watch. Tsubasa is irritated that Rinne would feign being a couple with Sakura simply to avoid his one-sided friendship with Matsugo. Devious Matsugo breaks out the barbeque grill and Rinne immediately seems like his best friend for the chance to get some decent food. Finally everyone heads into the dilapidated house to investigate the haunting. A strange noise makes Rinne thing a poltergeist may be responsible, but the sound is simply Kuromitsu running a vacuum cleaner to take care of the dust. Anju explains to Sakura that cleaning a house helps to weaken the spirits that haunt it. Suddenly Matsugo hands out room assignments, putting all the girls in one room, he and Rinne in one, and leaves Tsubasa to sleep with the cats. Before everyone can go to sleep a grinding sound fills the house and when everyone heads down stairs to investigate they find the support beam has shifted slightly. Rinne removes a series of wards from the wooden beam to reveal a spectral face etched into the wood. The pillar explains that it is not an evil spirit but was two-hundred years old and living as a tree deep in the mountains when it heard talk of something call the "sea" where half-naked women frolicked and played. He was happy when he was cut down and brought to the seaside, but he was placed inside the villa, unable to see the naked women playing in the water. Rinne decides to help by equipping the pillar with a pair of "spirit vision goggles" that broadcast the images seen through a "spirit camera" to show the pillar the ocean so it will cease trying to pull itself free of the house. Unfortunately the camera is turned toward Ageha and Matsugo who start tossing fireworks at one another. The pillar panics and tears free of the house causing it to collapse around him but in the end it is happy to finally see the sea.

(Gathering the Dead)
Child shinigami are given homework assignments during their summer vacation and Shoma arrives at Rinne's home wanting help with his. He is charged with researching methods of gathering spirits, though because he is so young it will be the spirits of insects that he is responsible for. When asked why Kurosu can not help him gather the bug spirits the black cat reminds everyone that he does not work overtime and it is nearly five o'clock already. Shoma offers Rinne the paltry sum of five hundred yen and they set off to hunt for bug spirits. Shoma explains that he is looking for a stag beetle spirit, but not just any stag beetle, the legendary one hundred year old stag beetle. Catching the beetle will net Shoma 10,000 points, and as usual he wants to grab as many points as he can in one fell swoop. Spirit sap from trees lures insect spirits and luckily they find the gigantic stag beetle nearby. Unfortunately the sap has also attracted wasp spirits as well. The wasps make things doubly difficult until Kurosu arrives with bug spray and banishes them all. Rokumon is shocked that the elite black cat would decide to work overtime to help his young master, but Shoma points out that Kurosu is in it for himself. If he catches the giant stag beetle he can sell it to a pet shop in the afterlife for 100,000 yen, a sum that blows Rinne away. Rinne and Kurosu battle back and forth for the beetle with the black cat dumping spirit sap on Rinne to make the giant insect chase him around. Finally Shoma gives Rinne a Spirit Absorbing Insect Cage to suck in the giant beast. Rinne captures it but rather than give the case and bug to Shoma he runs away with it, planning on cashing it in for himself. Unfortunately inside the glass capture cage the beetle looks tiny and Rinne is only given 500 yen due it its shrimpy size.

202: ナスロマン
Nasu roman
(Eggplant Romance)
On the last night of Obon Rinne is helping gather the spirits that returned to the earth to visit their families so that they can go back to the afterlife. One the way from the afterlife the spirits ride cucumbers that move quickly with the speed of a horse so that they can reach their families quicker, while one the way back the spirits climb aboard an eggplant with stick legs that make them look like cows and ride them slowly back from whence they came. Kain is running the show while Rinne picks up a little extra money by helping out. The red-headed shinigami points out that one eggplant is still remaining, meaning that a spirit has not returned and is lingering somewhere. Elsewhere Sakura finds the spirit of an old woman standing in front of an abandoned home covered in overgrown vines and tall grass. The old woman explains that she lived here until last autumn and rode a cucumber horse here, but she lived alone so no one was there to greet her. She is saddened to see how overgrown everything has become. Kain and Rinne arrive with the eggplant cow for the old woman to ride on, but as soon as she sees it she panics and attacks the eggplant. Rinne tells Kain that helping spirits is his job and uses the illusionary lantern to make the ghost's home seem just as it was when she was alive thinking it will help her to pass on. Much to their surprise they see that she used to grow eggplants in her home garden and seems very fond of them. Suddenly a man peers over the rosebushes and cheerfully greets the old woman who appears very frightened. She starts to recall that she used to look forward to the young man poking his head over the bush to say hello because he reminded her of her late husband. Finally she remembers the day she died. While working in the garden she felt a pain in her chest and her young neighbor rushed over to see her. As he came into her garden she saw him clearly for the first time, whereas before he had always been mostly hidden by the bush- he looked just like a giant eggplant. Seeing Sakura standing in the garden the eggplant man suddenly appears and offers her flowers after thinking she is the old woman's granddaughter. After that act of kindness the old woman boards her eggplant cow and rides off into the afterlife.

203: 赤いソメン
Akai somen
(Red Somen)
One summer afternoon Ayame comes to Tsubasa's home for a consultation. She explains that she has been unable to handle a certain spiritual problem on her own. Much to Ayame's disappointment Rinne and Sakura are also visiting Tsubasa, thwarting her shot at having some alone time with her crush. Ayame explains the nature of her problem. From a large pack she assembles a bamboo chute with rushing water and dips somen noodles into it with chopsticks, releasing them to flow down the bamboo slide. Ayame tells Rinne to try and catch the noodles to eat them which Rinne happily attempts to do. The noodles rush down the water filled chute, breaking Rinne's chopsticks and knocking him through the air from the force of its impact. Ayame tells everyone she knows the cause and tells an unseen presence to come out. From behind her a depressed ghost girl steps out leaving Rinne shocked he did not notice her presence. Suddenly the ghost explains that she had a crush on a classmate and one summer they went to a festival together along with their other classmates and attempted to catch somen noodles as they were dropped down just as Ayame showed Rinne earlier. The girl explains that if she could catch a red noodle with her chopsticks she would confess her feelings to the boy, but she was clumsy and unable to do so. By the time that autumn came the boy was already dating someone else. In order to try to help the girl pass on Ayame releases only red somen noodles into the flowing bamboo chute, hoping to make it easy for her to catch a noodle. Rinne quickly realizes that the reason the girl cannot grasp the somen is because she has spiritual fetters connecting her to Ayame. The ties are binding the two girls because they both are harboring unconfessed love for someone. Tsubasa confesses to Ayame, leaving her feeling overjoyed, though he only did it to sever the spiritual fetters binding the girl to her. Now that she is freed from Ayame she easily catches a red somen noodle and is able to pass on, though Ayame is in tears when Tsubasa casually says he'll talk to her later.

204: ショッピングモールの姉
Sakura no kigen
(The Shopping Mall Sister)
At the end of summer vacation Sakura and her friends visit the local shopping mall where they encounter a fortune-teller. Miho marches to the front of the line to meet the beautiful young woman who Sakura suspects is half-Japanese. The fortune-teller quotes Miho a price of a thousand yen in advance, and Sakura's friend quickly realizes her wallet is missing. Suddenly the fortune-teller's crystal ball begins to glow and she enters into trance before announcing that Miho's wallet is in one of her shopping bags. Sakura decides to report back to Rinne the odd crystal ball she saw. He and Rokumon realize that it must be a shinigami tool that has fallen into human hands. Rinne, Sakura and Rokumon rush to the mall only to find the fortune-teller has vanished and left a note behind saying that she will not surrender the crystal ball after it obviously warned her of Rinne's impending arrival. Luckily the woman immediately returns explaining that she had rushed off to a bargain sell, but Sakura is very surprised when she realizes that the fortune-teller can see Rinne despite the fact he is wearing his haori. Stepping outside the woman is possessed by the crystal ball and demands 10,000 yen in exchange for the orb. Rinne is shocked, as the reward for its recovery is a mere 500 yen. When Rinne tries to take it back by force, the woman tosses a banana peel for him to trip on, and Sakura realizes that is where the fortune-teller had disappeared to when they arrived, having known she would need the banana to stop Rinne. As she flees, the woman trips on a rock and drops the crystal ball into a lake and Rinne jumps in to retrieve it. Swimming around, he finds nothing, realizing it was all a ruse so she could escape. The woman does not return to the mall, but much to the surprise of the student body at Sankai High she arrives announcing she is their newest teacher.

205: 魔女の末裔
Majo no matsuei
(Descendant of the Witch)
At the school assembly the new teacher is introduced as Annette Hitomi Anematsuri, and she explains that her unique name and appearance are due to being a quarter-French on her grandmother's side. All the students seem fascinated by their new beautiful, exotic teacher, but Rinne and Sakura notice that she still has the crystal ball in her possession. Sakura cannot help but wonder how she got the ball back after it appeared to have sunk in the park's lake. Annette winds up assigned as Rinne and Sakura's homeroom teacher, and she immediately panics upon seeing Rinne in her class. Sakura inquires as to why she seems surprised, saying that the crystal ball should have told her they would be her students, but Annette lies and claims that she in fact did know. All of the students start asking to have their fortunes read, but as Annette gazes into the ball only static appears. She gives it a slap, but it seems to be broken, prompting her to quickly start class. Later that afternoon Annette explains to Rinne and Sakura that her ball has not been working well and that it is quite an ancient heirloom that has been passed down from her French family to her. It seems she is descended from a line of medieval French witches. After Tsubasa talks about the witch trials that swept across Europe, Annette explains that her ancestors made a deal with shinigami for the crystal ball rather than devils as everyone suspected (allegedly trading it for some bread). Her grandmother married a Japanese tourist who brought her back to Japan along with the crystal ball thus explaining how Annette wound up with it. Whenever she has lost it in the past it has always simply reappeared in her room later that day, which Rinne understands to mean that the ball really must recognize her as its owner. She goes on to explain that after graduating from college last spring something awful happened- the economy dried up and jobs became hard to find. Her mother and grandmother forced her to stop playing video games all day and go down to the shopping mall with the crystal ball as a part-time job. Just then Rinne touches the ball and sees a vision of him turning it in to the Shinigami union and receiving 500 yen. Annette promptly gives him the ball, much to his surprise and he takes it in for the reward. Before he can arrive at the office, he sees another vision- a sign for crystal ball maintenance that costs 200 yen and then another vision of Annette giving him 1,000 yen. Hurrying along Rinne realizes that the office and the crystal ball repair shop are right next to one another and he has to make a choice- turn in the ball for 500 yen, or pay 200 to fix it and have Annette give him a 1,000 yen for his trouble. Annette is surprised when Rinne returns her ball to her and explains he had it repaired, and just as predicted she hands him 1,000 yen bill... only to ask for her 800 yen in change back.

206: 初めての試練
Hajimete no shiren
(The First Ordeal)
With her crystal ball restored Annette has been doing some free fortune-telling for her students. Most of the questions her students have are mundane, the whereabouts of a lost cat or wondering if a boyfriend is being unfaithful. Eventually a freshman girl named Manami Ubukata comes forward and asks why her boyfriend was late for a recent date. Annette can see that the spirit of a middle-aged man in glasses looms over the girl and she promise to get to the bottom of it. Annette instead asks Rinne to perform an exorcism on the girl, to which Rinne agrees, though he expects to get paid which shocks Annette. Sakura explains that Rinne is poor and Annette says starting salary for a teacher is quite a pittance. Later Sakura watches Ubukata as she goes to talk to her boyfriend. She notices the old man's spirit appear and while the girl speaks to her boyfriend he slamps the door in his face and then drops a chalk board eraser on his head. Ubukata rushes to Annette to ask why her promised help has made no difference and the teacher fears that she'll look bad in front of her new students. Sakura steps in and tells the girl that she should go make an offering at the weather hutch, as Rinne is currently refusing to help without some form of payment. Just as Sakura tells her this, Annette jumps in and offers to help as she tries to win back some of her fading popularity with the students. In her crystal ball she sees Tsubasa, who promptly arrives and tosses his sacred ashes around, though they do little to bother the ghost. Peering into Annette's crystal ball once again they see the ghost bothering her date, but continue looking back in time and quickly realize the spirit is Ubukata's father. Rinne knows better however and he correctly realizes that this is not a ghost at all but a vengeful spirit spawned by the feelings of her father. Just then her father rushes into the classroom asking Ubukata if everything is alright. He rushed over from work and soon they realize that Ubukata is an only child and her overprotective father worried about her starting to date, hence the inadvertent creation of the vengeful spirit. The case is solved without Rinne's help, yet when another student is haunted by a ghost Annette tries to get another free consultation from Rinne.

207: 花畑の謎
Hanabatake no nazo
(The Mystery of the Flower Garden)
Rinne, Ageha, Matsugo and a host of other shinigami are dispatched to the flower garden on the banks of the Sanzu River, which runs through the afterlife. The flowers are typically the first thing someone sees upon their death, and so it is important to keep it tidy and beautiful. Recently the flowers have been withering and the young shinigami are there to find out why. Not only that, but Kain had investigated the flowers earlier and has now gone missing. As soon as they all dash into the field to being their investigation they fall into a large hole. Soon Suzu joins the search for her master, calling in the blood hounds to find his scent. In the confusion, Matsugo leads Rinne away to they can have some alone time in the cave, but Ageha quickly disrupts his plan. Rinne manages to escape from them both and finds Renge down in the tunnels and initially blames her for tunneling under the flower garden but it turns out she is merely trying to dig Kain out after finding him there. Pushing deeper they try to discover the source of the holes as Suzu's pack of ornery dogs make everything more difficult. Finally deep underground they find a mole's ghost, realizing it was the source of the problems.

208: 音が追ってくる
Oto ga ottekuru
(The Chasing Sound)
While walking home from school one evening Sakura witnesses a strange, amorphous spirit suddenly appear and fly past her freshman classmate, Mai Ueda. Sakura takes Mai to speak with Rinne, and she explains this has been happening since the end of summer vacation. As she speaks a phantom handprint appears on the window. Rinne uses his Sense Coating Spray to hose down the spirit and make him visible to Mai. Everyone is shocked to see a scarecrow that Mai seems to recognize. She explains that during her summer vacation she worked on a farm where the scarecrows were weathered and their drawn-on faces has faded badly. Rinne offers the scarecrow a doll microphone so that he can communicate, but instead he slaps the microphone away and attacks Rinne with his sickle. Eventually the scarecrow starts carving the Japanese character "he" on the wall over and over- "he he he". The girl recalls redrawing the scarecrow's eyes using a familiar bit of graffiti called a "heno heno moheji" face which uses Japanese characters to make eyes, a nose, and a mouth. The scarecrow carves "promise" into Rinne's wall and the girl remembers that she was called away to eat lunch while drawing on his face. Just then she remembers that she forgot to include his mouth, which is drawn with the Japanese character "he", which he keeps carving into the wall. Mai draws the missing mouth on the scarecrow and he thanks her and disappears. As payment Rinne hopes to get some delicious rice from Mai's farm, but the next day she brings him flowers, explaining that her family has a flower farm, leaving Rinne hungry.
