Chapter 239: ジューンブライドの幽霊
Jyuun buraido no yuurei

(The Ghost of the June Bride)
Rinne and Sakura investigate a cafe that was once a wedding hall. While there they find a veiled ghost that comes and goes but wears a veil obscuring her face and speaks in a demonic tone. Strangely, in a photograph of the ghostly bride kept by her still living husband, her attitude changes visibly. Rinne uses an illusionary lantern to recreate the wedding hall and summon forth the spirit bride, but he is shocked to see that her face is identical to that of the groom. Initially Rinne suspects that her inability to pass on is related to her desire to have a June wedding, but he eventually deduces that she was not a real bride at all but an actress wearing a wedding dress who was to appear in a brochure promoting June weddings who died en route to buy more film for the photo shoot. After photographing the bride and groom together she is able to pass on to the next world.

Notes:
  • It may sound odd when Sakura says "the wedding chapel went out of business" but it is not a church, it is a for profit business. In the west weddings are typically held at churches, but in Japan western-style weddings are instead often held at wedding halls (結婚式場/kekkonshikijo) which are non-religious venues akin to a banquet hall. This is the type of location that the faceless bride is searching for.
  • The origin of the term "june bride" is throught to originate from the fact that the name of the month of June is taken from the Roman goddess Juno who was the goddess of marriage.
  • Yorishiro (依代) references an object that a spirit is drawn to dwell in.

Chapter 240: 百葉箱消失!?
Hyakyoubako shoushitsu!?

(The Vanished Weather Hutch!?)
Rinne's next investigation lands on his doorstep when a spiritual distortion overtakes the weather hutch he uses to receive commissions from the student body. Rinne and Sakura find a young ghost boy who lurks around the hutch and reveals that he was responsible for burying a time capsule at that location a decade ago. The ghost was a member of the pop music club and had a crush on Minako, the singer of the club's band and left the lyrics to a love song he wrote for her in the capsule. He immediately regretted including it and died by falling off a pedestrian bridge on his way to dig it up. While walking past the club room the sound of music being played is heard and much to everyone's surprise the old club has reunited to remember their deceased member on the tenth anniversary of his death. All seems well until he is mortified to see Minako is pregnant and to add injury to insult they club pulls out the lyrics he wrote from the time capsule and start to write a song around the embarrassing lyrics.

Chapter 241: 伝説の聖書
Densetsu no seisho

(The Bible of Legend)
While visiting Tsubasa's house with Sakura with the intention of eating some delicious nabe, Rinne comes across an object called the "Bible of Legend" that Tsubasa's parents won at an auction. The Bible is allegedly infused with the spiritual power of the "Big Father" a powerful Catholic priest who used it during many exorcisms. Rinne had hoped that he would get to eat nabe during his visit, which is put on hold when a spirit makes its presence known and slowly devours all of the food in the house as Rinne, Sakura, Tsubasa and Rokumon run around trying to find the elusive ghost. Finally they track them to an upstairs room where it is revealed they are not spirits at all but are actually five hungry children claiming to be the issue of Big Father who's bible they're trying to retrieve. The children explain that despite their father's immense spiritual abilities they're family is very poor and they were overwhelmed by all the food they found while trying to locate the bible. Soon, Big Father himself arrives. Tsubasa is incredibly excited to meet the priest and grabs the bible of legend in order to get it's former owner to autograph it for him. When he does dozens of photos of Big Father carousing with women, getting drunk and throwing money around fall out from between the pages. It seems Big Father's lavish lifestyle is what keeps his family living in poverty.

Chapter 242: ゴールドライセンス
Goorudo raisensu

(Gold License)
Rinne is stopping by the Life Count Administration Bureau to seek reimbursement for his shinigami tools when he is asked to show his shinigami license. He comments to Rokumon that this is an usual, new procedure, because he is typically not required to show it. He explains that there are four ranks of shinigami licenses: platinum (which Tamako has), gold, silver (which is what Rinne, Ageha, and Matsugo have) and then the lowest level, which is bronze (Shoma). Rinne is shocked to hear that one of the elementary school aged shinigami behind him in line is actually a gold license holder. Then the young boy is moved ahead to present his license to Kain who's dog sniffs it and promptly devours it. Kain scolds the child, saying it was a fake made of cardboard. Kain tells Rinne that counterfeit golden licenses are becoming a problem and as they walk outside they find Ageha using a vending machine that dispenses gold licenses. Ageha blows up the vending machine and a damashigami leaps out. A brief chase ensues before it disappears into a portal and vanishes. Ageha, Rinne and Kain pursue the criminal and follow a trail of counterfit gold licenses back to the damashigami headquarters where they find Sabato and Ageha's sister with boxes full of bootleg licenses. Sabato makes a swift escape in a storm of fake licenses, but in the aftermath Rinne discovers his father's gold license on the floor- a gold license that Kain confirms is legitimate, meaning that Sabato exorcised 2,000 spirits at some point during his career before he became a damashigami. Not only did Sabato attain this feat, he shows his picture on the license and says he attained this status by the time he time he was in high school.

Chapter 243: 正当な手段
Seitou na shudan

(Justifiable Means)
Rinne and the others go to seek out Tamako to inquire about Sabato's status as a gold card carrying shinigami, the fact that he held such an elite rank as early as high school seems impossible. Tamako tells everyone that there was nothing illegal about Sabato's achievement and Rinne's father starts to relate a tale from his high school days of saving pretty young girls from evil spirits. His teacher had issued a challenge to young Sabato that he should exorcise one hundred spirits by sunset. Instead it seems that Sabato made use of a technique called the "Leaving Stroke" where he would slice up the spirit enough to leave it harmless and allow the pretty girls to claim the kill for themselves with little effort. In tears, Sabato's teacher vents his frustration, saying he had hoped to promote Sabato before he retired, but young Sabato was far too lazy to make any real effort. Upon hearing that his teacher was planning to retire Sabato feels some remorse at his less than serious effort. Trying to motivate Sabato he tells him that he'll give him one final chance and if he can win Sabato's teacher will give him his own gold license. Ageha cannot believe that such a thing is allowed, but Tamako confirms that other than exorcising 2,000 spirits one can defeat a gold license holder and take their license from them. Just as the battle was about to begin the girls Sabato helped earlier arrive to cheer him on. They distract Sabato and he lets his guard down to wave at them, but as he drops his scythe it lands on the head of his teacher allowing him to win the battle and take his teacher's gold license completely by accident. Ultimately Rinne decides to challenge Sabato for his gold license after learning that he can earn an extra 200 yen for each spirit he captures as a gold license holder.

Chapter 244: 本気の闘い
Honki no tatakai

(Serious Battle)
Upon finding his old scythe among his mother's things Sabato immediately accepts Rinne's challenge to take his gold license from him. It seems as if a serious battle is about to unfold when Sabato's old scythe immediately breaks due to years of disuse. Sabato flees with Rinne in pursuit and heads to Sakura's house to ask her if he can borrow some tape to mend his broken scythe. Sabato flees again but Rinne optimistically tells Sakura that soon he will be able to repay all of the kindnesses she has shown him as he assumes he will be making more money once he takes his father's gold license. As the rest of the shinigami arrive to watch Rinne pursue his father Kain decides to get involved, tossing out a ball filled with spirit shifting incense to try and help Rinne as he cannot tolerate a damashigami like Sabato to hold a gold license. The incense summons spirits that surround Sabato and beg him to send help them pass on. Everyone thinks Sabato will be distracted and cease fleeing from Rinne and soon be defeated, but shockingly Sabato smirks confidently and exorcises dozens of demons with one stroke. At least that is how it seems- Sabato used his "Leaving Stroke" technique that breaks a spirit down into almost nothing, neutralizing it so he could give them to female shinigami. Sabato even offers Rinne all of the easy to dispatch spirits, a tempting offer given the amount of money this many exorcisms will bring in. Thankfully Rinne realizes he can make more money in the future if he takes his father's gold license and continues to attack Sabato instead of take the bait to exorcise the spirits. Rinne presses the attack and finally the tape holding Sabato's scythe together gives out leaving the end dangling from a bit of loose tape. It seems as if Rinne has won until the blade breaks off and knocks Rinne on the head, allowing Sabato to win and escape with his gold license in tow.

Chapter 245: 黒い通知表
Kuroi tsuuchihiyou

(Black Report Card)
Just before summer vacation Annette asks Rinne to come visit her at home. Rinne, however, is skeptical and knows his teacher must want something out of him. Ultimately he, Sakura and Tsubasa all agree to stop by for a visit where Annette tells them that she has misplaced the class's report cards and needs help finding them. She says that in order to find them before the Sankai High's closing ceremonies she'll have to entice the help of the "little people" or "borrowers" who are small, spirit like creatures that often help her grandmother in her herb garden. Annette explains that summoning the little people will be easy; all she has to do is find her grandmother's little person directory and look up the names of the trio she is trying to summon. She calls out for Abel, Achille, and Adam and then explains she cannot ask them to do anything without offering them some sort of reward. The little people ask that she gives them chocolate cake and Annette realized that the local convenience store was sold out leaving her to make her own which was less than enjoyable for the tiny trio. Once Annette gets her students to her home they find that the cake has barely been touched and then discover the missing report cards are all covered in something that looks like charcoal thanks to the little people that feel ripped off after being paid with Annette's crummy cake. After Tsubasa starts to throw around his sacred ashes, the little people begin to retaliate by throwing ink filled balloons. Quickly things escalate and Annette asks Rinne to exorcise them, but he explains that they are not evil spirits, merely angry littles. The battle continues and the little people start cutting up the report cards when Sakura notices that Annette's cake is going missing little by little. What was believed to be charcoal smeared everywhere is actually little bits of Annette's awful cake that the little people are using to make a mess in the house. Annette slams the little person directory book onto Abel, Achille and Adam, smashing them into the cake remnants and blackening out the pages of her grandmother's book in the process. Suddenly the little people appear behind Annette and they've grown to a tremendous size. In reality though the giants are merely paper cut outs which get batted around and leave the dirty cake bits all over Annette's house. Finally they vanish once they have used up all of the cake Annette gave them but her mother and grandmother return to find a messy house and her students get report cards covered in filth.

Notes:
  • In the manga chapter Annette was watching an anime program instead of the comedians she is watching in the anime adaptation.
  • In the original manga chapter Annette calls Abel, Achille and Adam 小人 (kobato). Basically "little people". In the anime adaptation she specifically calls them 妖精 (yosei/fairies). In the original they are merely called "little people" perhaps intending them to be more akin to the small folk found in Mary Norton's 1952 novel The Borrowers. This is the likely influence given the alliterative names of the novels (The Borrowers Afield (1955), The Borrowers Afloat (1959), The Borrowers Aloft (1961), and The Borrowers Avenged (1982)), the triple A names of the characters in this story, and the fact that Studio Ghibli had released The Secret World of Arrietty which had been released in 2010 and was adapted from The Borrowers as well.
  • Gateau au chocolat is French for "chocolate cake".
  • When Annette tries to summon three more little people to help make the cake for the original trio, one of them asks for a 0ルメスルのバッグ with the O used to obscure the brand name. The little person is asking for an "Hermes Bag".
  • Hitogata dolls (ひとがた人形) are pieces of paper infused with souls.

Chapter 246: 人待ち幽霊
Hito machi yuurei

(The Expectant Ghost)
In a seaside inn an old painting of a man hangs on a wall. It has long been thought that the painting shows a man awaiting the arrival of a beautiful woman. Ayame is asked by the inn's owner to have a look at the painting and she agrees that it they eyes seem to follow you. Ayame offers to perform an exorcism on the image, but as soon as she does the image of the man escapes from the painting and disappears. Outside Tsubasa mentions that he knew Ayame was working nearby and decided to invite Sakura to come along with him figuring the more the merrier. Rinne tags along as well thanks to the promise of a free place to stay and food to eat. When Ayame realizes Tsubasa brought his friends along and she will not be able to enjoy a quiet day with her crush she's understandably upset. Everyone is surprised to see that the painted man has latched onto Ayame who the painting ghost says reminded him of a woman he loved long ago. Ayame offers to allow the painted ghost to remain with her in order to make it happy rather than sending it back to its painting unhappy, but when Rinne almost mentions that she has a crush on Tsubasa she quickly silences him. The ghost painting explains that in old Edo he was something of a ladykiller with many attractive beauties who chased him, however he was in love with a young lady that resembled Ayame. Surprisingly Ayame says she envies the young lady that had the attention of the ghost, but finally Tsubasa decides to intervene- by holding a mirror up so the painting can see how poorly drawn it is. This has an even worse effect than intended as the ghost refuses to return to his painting looking as ridiculous as he does. Finally Rinne uses some separation incense that parts the ghost from the image and allows his true visage to reappear. His confidence restored the ghost image threatens to claim Ayame's heart with his true face. When he dramatically unveils himself he reveals a very typical looking old-fashioned Edo face that hardly seems impressive to everyone's modern sensibilities. Finally the ghost agrees to return to the painting and Tsubasa invites Ayame to come hang out. Unfortunately he includes everyone else and Ayame fails to have any private time with the exorcist. Meanwhile the painting is still getting squeals from modern girls when he winks at passing visitors.

    Yuurei gomu booto

    (Inflatable Ghost Raft)
While still enjoying their summer vacation Rinne, Sakura and Ageha visit the seashore where reports of an annually appearing ghost raft spring up each year. The lifeguard explains that he has seen the raft floating on the the distant horizon, but upon swimming out to rescue the occupant there is only the open sea with no one in sight. Ageha hardly seems inclined to work during her vacation, but Rinne and Rokumon always have their eye on the bottom line and hope to make a little extra yen during their visit to the coast. Suddenly a giant sea monster appears tormenting the raft and Rinne leaps into action, though Ageha beats him to the punch. The spirit on the boat is a beautiful young woman who seems completely disinterested in Ageha saving her, preferring to speak only to Rinne instead. Rinne asks why the monster was tormenting her and she cryptically says she only wanted to make friends with "that boy". The ghost girl goes on to explain that she had a crush on a handsome lifeguard who was very popular among the female beach-goers. In order to try and get his attention she rowed the inflatable raft out to sea hoping to make him come and save her. Instead the girl lost her oars and but seemingly won the attention of the distant lifeguard. Instead she was shocked to see an overweight, hairy man swimming out to save her. Disappointed she tried to flee by diving into the ocean and swimming away, but eventually she tired herself out and drowned. Rinne explains that it was her perception of the man who tried to rescue her that conjured the seeming sea-beast they saw earlier. Rinne decides that he can use a channeling doll to download the image of the lifeguard from the girl's mind and help her meet him and pass on. Unfortunately it seems that she does not exactly remember what he looked like and creates a strange multi-headed amalgamation. Eventually she simply makes a tanned version of Rinne, drawing the ire of Ageha. Because Ageha tries to attack the girl she immediately creates a Ageha-like sea monster that goes on the rampage. Suddenly Tsubasa arrives, well-tanned from his days at the beach and strongly resembling the life-guard that the girl so desired. Upon seeing him the sea monster disappears and the ghost girl seems to be at peace. Unfortunately she refuses to pass on as she is how happy to linger with Tsubasa.

    Notes:
    • Initially Rinne wonders if the giant out at sea is an "umibouzu" (海坊主, literally "sea priest"), a sea monster. Traditionally these are depicted as massive silhouettes out at sea. The umibouzu will typically ask for a bucket or barrel in order to dump water on sailors it finds out at sea until it drowns them. Giving the creature a bottomless bucket that cannot hold water will confuse it and allow sailors to escape.
    • The "yorishiro" doll (依代) references an object that a spirit is drawn to dwell in. This is also referenced in Yashahime episode 33.

    (The Mysterious Fireworks)
Rinne and Sakura head to the countryside to investigate strange claims of fireworks exploding in strange patterns in the sky and spelling out gibberish. The troubles have been occurring for the past three years the fireworks salesman explains, and he proceeds to show Rinne a series of photographs details the strange words that are spelled out. The first year it was "brother" written in kanji. After that it was "see". Miho offers the ridiculous theory that the messages have something to do with a brother who spied on his sister kissing a boy. As the fireworks begin Rinne and Sakura spy a ghostly man watching them from among the crowd. Rinne asks the ghost if the firework messages are his doing, and the ghost laughs, saying that this year's message will be even better though he is shocked and tries to flee when he assumes Rinne and Sakura are a couple. However the ghost seems heartened when Sakura says that Rinne is only her classmate. Rinne assumes that perhaps a girl broke up with the ghost during the fireworks festival one year and senses something ominous about the spirit. Soon the ghost reveals that four years ago he had planned to surprise a coworker with a message written in the fireworks, an order so complex that he paid half a million yen in order to pull it off. Having made the preparations his coworker arrived on the arm of another coworker. The ghost realized he had to cancel the message but he is too late, a heart with "Yuka" written in it fires and the loud speaker announces it is from one of her co-workers, allowing the other man to steal the glory. Rinne believes the subsequent fireworks have been the ghost's attempt at creating the word "curse" which looks similar to the kanji for previous year's attempts. Rinne realizes it too late and this year's firework launches, but thankfully it is once again garbled and looks like "helmet".
