Chapter 249: キャンプ場荒し
Kyanpu jiyou arashi

(Ferocious Campsite)
Strange hauntings have been occurring at a campground during the summer, prompting Rinne, Sakura, Ageha, Rokumon and Tsubasa all to go and investigate. They find tents covered in mud as their first clue, but then things go along normally until late one evening as Ageha is cooking barbeque a small creature flops onto the grill, ruining the food that Rinne was so desperately looking forward to. The little thing stands, revealing itself to be a small clay doll that promptly flees. Rinne and the others pursue the doll as it enters a cottage and find it perched on the bed of Shoma, the obnoxious elementary school student who will take any shortcut he can to become a shinigami one day. Rinne rouses the little boy who explains that the clay doll is part of a school project he was assigned to do over his summer vacation. The project was to capture the soul of something simple like a bird or a bug and reanimated it using the clay, but as usual Shoma decided to do something far beyond his abilities and capture a human soul in his clay doll. As everyone struggles in vain to stop the rampaging doll its swift reflexes help it to allude their attacks until the noise draws Kurosu down to investigate. Initially the greedy cat refuses to do anything until Shoma pays him for his overtime. Then he promptly smashes the clay doll. When the soul finally escapes its clay prison it turns out it was not a human spirit at all but a monkey which explained its wild behavior.

Chapter 250: 百物語
Hyakumonogatari

(One Hundred Ghost Stories)
In Japan there is a tradition of lighting one hundred candles and telling ghost stories. As each story is told one candle is extinguished until eventually you are left in total darkness. It is said that once the final candle has been extinguished the spirits will appear. Rinne organizes just such an event at a summer Obon festival, and Sakura, Rika and Miho all attend. Rinne explains to Sakura the he had a message from a spirit asking him to help them escape from the one hundred tales event. As the stories begin ghosts flood the room, unseen by all except Rinne and Sakura. Miho and Rika comment on how cool the room is becoming despite the crowd and the burning candles. The stories begin, though no one realizes that the story-tellers are actually the ghosts that flooded the room. The first story is told by a ghostly taxi driver who recounts the tale of one rainy night when a pale woman was riding in the rear of his taxi. Slowly he turned around and found that she had slipped down behind him, passed out drunk and vomited on his seat! Everyone is puzzled by the story as it is not terribly frightening, but the candle is extinguished and the ghost vanishes. Everyone flees after the taxi spirit suddenly disappears but Rinne and Sakura are puzzled that he was purified and allowed to pass on so suddenly. Another ghost appears, this time a young girl, to tell the story of being in her school late one night and hearing a piano playing. She slowly slid open the door and sees her principal wearing a girl's school uniform as he touches the keys. Once again everyone is confused by these strange stories and the ghost girl vanishes upon finishing the tale. Another ghostly man tells the story of a grotesque statue that he threw away only to find it waiting in front of his house again each morning. It turns out he was throwing it away in the wrong place and one of the neighbors was angrily returning it. Rinne realizes that somehow relating these stories allows the ghosts to leave the burden of their past behind and pass on to the next world, but whichever one sent him the message for some reason cannot move on. More ghosts take their turns to tell their odd stories until only one candle is left. Rinne and Sakura are suddenly alone in the room and Rinne starts to panic. He realizes that once the ghost reaches nirvana there won't be anyone to pay him his 500 yen fee. Finally the ghost appears, covered in blood and hovering ominously. Rinne is relieved that the ghost was not one of the others that told his tale and escaped without paying. The man begins his story, telling the tale of one late night when he was driving his taxi. Rinne and Sakura immediately begin to realize he is retelling the same story of the pale looking woman from earlier. Then the ghost reveals the twist- upon looking closely at the woman he saw her stubble! She was a man! Finally able to tell his tale the ghost vanishes and Rinne realizes too late that he did not get paid.

Chapter 251: 目玉スターカー
Medama sutookaa

(Eyeball Stalker)
As summer vacation comes to an end, so do many young couples. Sakura listens as one of the freshmen at Sankai High named Sayuri Nara who discusses a stalker who has started pursuing her. The girl explains that it may just be her imagination, but she feels as if she is being watched. As Sakura stares at her she sees to looming, gigantic eyes hovering over the girl's head. At the same time Rinne gets a visit from another freshman, a young man named Masaru Ooki. Masaru tells Rinne that he confessed his love to a girl at the end of the school year and that they started dating over the summer, but for some reason she has grown cold towards him. He asks Rinne if any sort of spiritual issue could be the reason for his girlfriend's remoteness. Rinne stares at Masaru and sees a white thread extending from the top of his head which he recognizes as a spirit thread. Just then Sakura and Sayuri arrive and Sayuri boldly claims that Masaru is her stalker. Using a spirit paintball Rinne makes the looming eyes over Sayuri become visible. Sayuri flees in panic, but Rinne points out the eyes are connected to Masaru thanks to the thread he noticed earlier. Rinne claims that the eyes are a wraith created by Masaru's desires. Puzzlingly Masaru wonders aloud if it is his love of big breasts that has caused this to happen. He explains that Sayuri was angry about his obvious girl watching when they were at the pool together, but Rinne has his doubts about this being the case. They go back to Masaru's house and he recounts the summer he and Sayuri spent together. He tells them about catching goldfish at a fair, one for himself and one for Sayuri. As he explains this the eyes start to become more well defined and Sakura and Rinne realize they are the eyes of Masaru's pet goldfish. Rinne believes he has solved the case and he takes Masaru's goldfish to Sayuri's house. It seems Masaru's goldfish's desire to be reuinted with Sayuri's fish caused it to will a wraith into existence which then attached itself to Masaru in order to venture out in search of the missing fish. When Masaru dumps his fish in with Sayuri's the female goldfish beats up the bug-eyed goldfish, seemingly rejecting him. Masaru insists that does not solve the mystery of why Sayuri broke up wit him, but she angrily confirms it was because he was always staring at big breasted women.

Chapter 252: 祝福の羽
Shukufuku no hane

(The Blessed Feather)
Walking through the neighborhood one day, Sakura witnesses a strange situation- Masato is helping an old woman across the street and then leaps in front of a passing truck to save her from being killed. Then when Sakura checks on him he pushes her away to keep her safe from a falling girder. Masato has never been one to suffer for others, and so this change in attitude seems particularly strange. Rinne sees Masato and immediately attacks, hoping to get extra points for exorcising the devil during a special promotional week in the afterlife. When Rinne confronts Masato about his behavior Masato suddenly sprouts angel wings. The devil explains that he was at a swamp in hell illegally dumping garbage when he overturned a carton of angelic manju. Just then an angel appeared and thanks Masato for giving him the tasty buns and bestowed upon Masato a blessed angel feather which would help him exude benevolence. Now Masato is incapable of cursing anyone. He tries to turn Sakura into a frog but instead his curse hits a runaway doberman that was about to attack her. Rinne decides that if he can get Masato back to his devilish ways he'll be able to get more points for defeating him. Just as he's about to put some graffiti on a wall, Renge intercedes and attacks him. Rinne continues to push Masato, trying to get him to do something wicked and return to his devilish behavior but everything seems to backfire until finally Masato laughs at how he is getting the better of Rinne through his good behavior. Ultimately because Masato refuses to help Rinne (by becoming a devil again) he loses his angelic state and returns to devildom allowing Rinne to capture him. Unfortunately even with the reward he'll receive for Masato Rinne spent too much money on shinigami tools to try and return him to his devilish ways and finds himself with less money than when he began.

  • The angel is happy to recieve angel manju (天使饅頭/tenshi manju) from Masato. Manju is a flour bun filled with bean paste. The difference in manju and mochi is that the coating in mochi uses rice instead of flour.
  • Rinne explains that whoever gives up first will lose, comparing it to a game of chicken. In Japanese he says チキンレース (chicken race), as the term has been appropriated from English.

Chapter 253: 指輪と印鑑
Yubiwa to inkan

(The Ring and the Seal)
Ageha meets with Sakura, Rinne and Tsubasa and gives them some disconcerting news- this may be her last attempt to save her sister as it seems Sabato has proposed to her. Rinne is shocked to hear his of his father's plans to marry Ageha's sister, in the afterlife Sabato meets with Ageha's sister and offers her a ring. Sabato asks if she brought her official seal to sign the marriage documents and she promptly places her mark on the documents. Rinne and the others arrive and Ageha promptly tears up the documents with her sister's stamp upon them. Tsubasa picks up the scraps and realizes they are a bill of sale rather than marriage papers, it seems Sabato is trying to con his secretary by making her think she's marrying him. Furthermore Sabato does not even know his name, simply writing Bijin (beauty) into the blank for her name. Bizzarely enough her stamp confirms that actually is her name. Bijin dashes off to get more forms but Sabato tries to flee when he realizes their marriage certificates instead of the bill of sale he tried to force on her for the "wedding" ring. Sabato even tries to scam Sakura the same way, by offering her a ring (for sale) rather than as a proposal. Bijin finally seems to see Sabato for who he really is and with her scythe in hand claims she is coming for Sabato's head. They catch up with Sabato trying to sell the rings along with stolen appliances in the park. Bijin tries to confront him but he turns the tables, telling her he was selling the rings to earn a trip to the hot springs for the two of them. Sadly Bijin believes him and buys one of the rings and later Ageha gets a photo from Sabato and her sister's trip- along with all the other members of the Damashigami Company.

Notes:
  • The fact that Sabato wants Bijin's stamp is concerning as this functions as a legal signature on documents. The stamp is called an 印鑑 (inkan).
  • Rinne swings his scythe at Sabato who catches the blade between his hands. This is a play on 真剣白刃取り (shinken shirahadori) or "stopping a sword with your bare hands." This is often seen in manga, anime and films.
  • Everyone is shocked that Ageha's sister's name is Bijin (美人), which means "beautiful woman," and has been how people have described her throughout the series. It is something of an eccentric name.
  • "Her sister's face is as blank as a Noh mask." - Noh (能) is the oldest theatrical style that is still in active use today. It was originated in the 8th century and makes use of a number of masks that the actors wear.

Soon enough he spies Renge confronting a huge black object hovering in the sky. She slashes it with her scythe but much to everyone's surprise her blade fractures after a single slash. Rinne soon realizes that inside the black aura is Refuto holding a mysterious black scythe. Raito appears and explains that it is a shinigami murdering scythe that is filled with the souls of evil spirits that it has exorcised. It seems to have taken possession of Refuto, but Rinne soon realizes something is suspicious when Raito starts passing out coupons to repair Renge's damaged scythe and suspects this is another instance of them causing problems to drum up business. Realizing that the cursed scythe can slices through his own easily Rinne uses a single use spirit path to suck the scythe out of Refuto's hands. Refuto manages to regain the scythe again and tosses out a one hundred yen coin to distract Rinne. When Rinne once again disarms Refuto, Kain arrives and Raito bribes Renge into telling Kain that Rinne is the one behind the Shinigami attacks. Rinne uses the single use spirit path to dispose of the scythe, dumping it back at the Mikazuki Temple where Refuto and Raito work, nearly starting his rampage all over again. Rinne gets the reward, but is fined for his abusive use of the spirit way and loses all his reward in the process.

Chapter 255: 粗忽の死者
Sokotsu no shisha

(The Rude Casualty)
While at the cleaners one day Sakura witnesses a ghost suddenly run into the store with a dress stained red. The ghost pleads that she is in a tremendous hurry and then dashes away. Sakura contacts Rinne who comes to investigate and the spirit returns and repeats the same actions that Sakura saw. Rinne immediately realizes the girl is not a ghost and the pair follow her as she exits the store and disappears outside. Tellingly the girl disappears at a crosswalk and Sakura and Rinne come across a girl who says that she knew a girl named Ayu who was found collapsed at that same spot. Taking Rinne and Sakura to the hospital she explains that she is Ayu's sister, and that the girl fell into a coma ten days earlier. Rinne inquires if Ayu had a stained dress in her possession when she was found, but her sister shows them that the only thing she had was a bag with a flower-printed towel. Rinne returns to the scene of the spirit's disappearance and summons her, showing her the flowery towel and inquiring if it looks familiar to her. Instead of explaining anything about the towel the girl screams and runs away, where she promptly trips and falls into the road. Rinne rushes back to Ayu's sister's home and finds the ghost trying pawing through her closet. After some interrogation, Ayu reveals that she had ruined her sister's dress by dumping ketchup on it accidentally and then trying to have it cleaned without her ever knowing. Rinne explains what happened to Ayu's sister who simply hopes that Ayu will wake up from her coma. Rinne explains to Ayu that she is just a disembodied spirit rather than a ghost and that she can return to her body. It seems the towel was another item that Ayu had ruined of her sister's. After returning to her body Ayu takes all of the soiled clothes back to cleaners.

Chapter 256: 第一回サンマ祭り
Dai ikkai sanma matsuri

(The First Mackerel Festival)
As autumn approaches everyone in the neighborhood is enjoying a delicious and traditional meal of mackerel. In the afterlife Kain and the Life Count Administration are putting on a Mackerel Festival and Rinne and Rokumon can hardly wait to sample the delectable fish. What they do not realize is the fish they will be catching are ghosts, the result of so many in the world of the living devouring mackerel every autumn means that there is an increase in mackerel souls that need to be helped along to the wheel of reincarnation. Suddenly a massive, angry fish busts out of the sea in a rage and Kain explains that this is the collected spirits of mackerel that were left uneaten or were badly cooked and it refuses to move on and be reincarnated. A sign announcing the Mackerel Festival seems to have been papered over by Kain, and when the peeled away the sign explains that this is actually the Mackerel Soul-Sending Festival. To make matters worse the giant mackerel can breathe fire, which Kain explains is because he wanted to be cooked better after he was caught and was improperly prepared. Rinne realizes that the giant mackerel wishes to be eaten and he plans to to give it exactly what it wants. When Rinne tries to roast it on a pile of logs the fish rages and fights back, puzzling everyone, but Kain points out that the fish wants to be grilled, not simply tossed into a pile of burning logs. This seems to be an impossible request for such a massive fish, but Rinne has an epiphany. He uses the scythes of all the gathered shinigami and lays them criss-cross on the burning wood to create a make-shift grill. As the massive mackerel is finally well cooked it shrinks down and then vanishes, leaving everyone with nothing to eat much to their disappointment.

    (Special Guardian Sacred Bird)
Rinne and Rokumon lust over a small cup of instant ramen when Kurosu and his little master Shoma arrive through a portal. Kurosu immediately departs, as it is five pm and he refuses to work a moment of overtime. Shoma tells Rinne that he has a job for him and plops down a little black bird with three feet, a Yatagarasu. Shoma explains that he wants to show it off in his class tomorrow but can not keep it a home, instead he wants Rinne to keep it overnight so he can surprise everyone in his school the following day. The Yatagarasu is a mythological crow that guided the first emperor of Japan, Jimmu, into battle. Rinne balks at the idea until Shoma promises to pay him, and then produces the his box of "bird food". The food is an extravagant lobster and steak spread that is better than anything Rinne has had in ages. As soon as Shoma leaves Rinne and Rokumon decide that they'll give the Yatagarasu their ramen and eat it's food instead. The bird riots and flashes them with a holy light, stealing its food from them and devouring their ramen as well. As Rinne and Rokumon grow frustrated with the bird making noise and eating their food a portal opens with a hotdog tied to a string which lures the bird away. It seems Kurosu is trying to steal the bird back. He claims his intentions are pure but Rokumon finds a pamphlet that says there is a 10,000 yen reward for helping to protect the Yatagarasu. The bird flees through another portal and finds Sakura who is carrying some sweet potatoes that the bird also devours along with the food from a delivery man. Having eaten so much the bird grows rapidly and matures before opening a portal and flying away. Because the bird is a spirit of guidance it leads Rinne, Rokumon and Sakura to the bird sanctuary where it lived. Rinne thinks he will get a reward for returning the bird but instead he is only reimbursed 140 yen for the cup of ramen that the bird ate.

    • The bird Shomga brings Rinne is a Yatagarasu (八咫烏/eight-span crow). According to legend it was a yatagarasu that guided Emperor Jimmu (the likely legendary first emperor of Japan) to the Yamato province. The creature is also believed to be an incarnation of the sun due to its connection with the sun goddess Amaterasu.
    • The sign the yatagarasu is holding in its beak says "leading the way" (案内/annai).
    • The yatagarasu looks and sounds like the phoenix from Takahashi's earlier work, Ranma 1/2. The story of it growing larger as it eats also mimics the earlier phoenix story.

    Chapter 258: 首男
    Kubi otoko

    (Neck Man)
Annette recounts her encounter with the "neck man" a disembodied head that loomed out of the darkness while she was on the balcony of her home retrieving her laundry one night. The neck man visited her again while she was in the bath, peering through the window and then appearing in her bedroom while she slept as well. Rinne suggests that its like a stalker ghost, but Annette claims to not recognize the face that peers out at her from the darkness. Rinne negotiates a price of 500 yen to investigate matters for Annette and waits outside her home that night for any sign of the neck man. Inside, Annette peers into her crystal ball as Tsubasa and Sakura watch and she is shown an image of herself sitting in front of her house having a yard sale with various items including a black cloak and black pointed hat. Suddenly the neck man appears and Annette attacks him with a sword causing him to flee, but Sakura notices that he has a body hidden beneath a black cloak. Outside Rinne spots the neck man and realizes he is not a ghost at all but a normal human. Stepping inside Annette's house everyone realizes that the man is wearing the pointed black hat and cloak that Annette was selling at her yard sale which he bought while wearing glasses and a sick mask, hence her not remembering his face. The mystery man reveals that he is a former student of Annette's from two years ago and bought the outfit simply because he had a crush on her. After donning the cloak and hat he vanishes, his family is unable to see him anymore and soon he found that he was unable to remove the outfit, hence his returning to Annette to ask for her help. Instead, Annette attacked him when she saw his face looming in the darkness. Annette and Tsubasa both try to remove the outfit until Rinne finds a card written in French tucked in the hat's band. Annette's grandmother returns home and realizes that Annette sold some of her old clothes and frees the young man by saying the magic words. He promptly asks Annette for a date, but she immediately stands him up.

    • Head Man's real name is Rei Kuroi (黒井レイ). His last name means "black well" perhaps suggestive of the all-black outfit he buys from Annette's yard sale.
    • The French spell to remove the outfit is "costume, enlève-toi!" (suit, get off!).
