Utsukushii mado

(Beautiful Window)
Rinne wins fourth prize in a lottery at a shopping mall in the afterlife and is gifted a window wiper used to remove the handprints of spirits that cling and press themselves to windows. Rinne happily heads to Sakura's house where ghosts tend to linger and begins happily cleaning the windows while the wiper's warning light slowly moves from blue to yellow and finally to red warning him that he has only a little time left to get the wiper back to receive his reward. Just as he is about to leave a drunken ghost comes by and leaves his hand print on the window. Rinne tries to remove this final print but the this pushes the wiper over its limit and it begins to spread the dirty prints back onto the windows with each stroke costing Rinne his carefully earned balance for all his cleaning work.

(Christmas Exorcism Party)
A holiday party between Rokumon, Rinne, Sakura, Tsubasa, Ageha and Ringe goes awry when a ghost refuses to pass on unless he can be involved in the group's secret Santa gift exchange. Rinne however cannot hide his excitement when he receives Ageha's gift, a teddy bear holding a huge stack of cash. The gifts are constantly reshuffled and re-exchanged much to Rinne's frustration and ultimately everyone except the ghost winds up with things they do not want. The ghost passes away happily after getting Renge's homemade scarf while Ageha is left to ponder what to do with a CD that was recorded by the ghost before he died.

Chapter 311: 黒い破魔矢
Kuroi hamaya

(Black Ceremonial Arrow)
Ayame contacts Tsubasa and Rinne about a troublesome discovery. She has a bundle of hamaya, ceremonial sacred arrows, that were to be used in the New Year celebrations at her Shinto temple but after a dream of a black-suited man coming to visit she found that all of the arrows had become tainted and turned black. It takes very little time for the culprit, Masato, to come and claim credit for the mangled arrows. It seems his curse causes any wishes that are hung from the ceremonial arrows to backfire on their wisher. Ayame had promised the public that wishes made with the arrows would come true and expected quite the popular reception so it is exceedingly that the curse be removed to avoid a scandalous start to the new year. Rinne and Masato battle one another using the cursed arrows to cause a variety of misfortunes to befall one another until ultimately the curse is broken. Ayame is left to hope that her own wish, a date with Tsubasa, will be granted. She gets her date, but unfortunately Sakura and Rinne come along as well.

Chapter 312: 噛んであげたい
Kandeaketai

(I Want to Bite You)
Rinne and Sakura assist a young man who has been plagued by a ghostly fear for quite some time. Each year around New Year a someone wearing a traditional "lion dance" costume appears and tries to bite him. As a young child the lion would come to his house each year during the New Year's celebration and take special care to knock on his door and try to bite the young boy. As he grew older he developed a fear of the costume and whomever was inside. Without fail the lion would return each year to try to bite him and now that the boy is older he took a skiing trip in order to avoid encountering the man in the lion costume. It seems however that the lion did not come this year with their classmate out of town but suddenly the lion appears, revealing itself to be the boy's deceased grandfather. The boy never knew that it was good luck to allow yourself to be bitten by the lion mask which is why his grandfather visited the house each year. It seems that the only way his grandfather can peacefully pass on is if he is allowed to bite his grandson's head, but the boy refuses to remove his knit cap due to a bump he got on his head while on his skiing trip. Ultimately Rinne places a wig on top of the cap and the lion seems satisfied to bite his grandson's head and peacefully pass on.

Shoujo no kama

(The Maiden's Scythe)
Sakura notices some something strange in an empty house in the neighborhood and seeks out Rinne to tell him what she witnessed only to find he is not home. Rinne is in the afterlife where he has discovered a pawn shop selling a scythe that is said to belong to a "legendary shinigami maiden" who holds a very elite platinum status within the ranks of the reapers. The shopkeeper tells Rinne that the young girl who owned the scythe allegedly retired ten years ago. Rinne buys the staff and when he takes it to his grandmother's home to show it to her, she immediately spots the license and claims that the scythe belongs to Rinne's mother. The name on the license is "Otome Rokudo". Soon Sabato appears and it seems he was the one responsible for pawning the heirloom. Rinne eventually returns to the world of the living where Sakura asks him to investigate the haunted house she discovered. Upon arriving they find a ghost that has already become an evil spirit, but before Rinne can spring into action a very young girl named Ichigo appears who apparently can see the ghosts as well.

  • This is the first appearance of Rinne's mother, Ichigo/Otome. Her father and mother also make their first appearances.
  • "But over a decade ago, she retired at the height of her popularity, and she hasn't shown herself in public at all ever since then." "Like an idol." - The pawnbroker and Rokumon's comments reference popular idols who typically retire at a young age when they marry and go on to live normal lives outside of the entertainment business.
  • Sabato occasionally mixes a little English into his speaking for some reason, such as when wondering why Otome ran away after he pawned her scythe and license. He then states "Why?" in English.
  • The term used to describe the "ghost" haunting Ichigo's home is "生霊" (ikiryou). Literally the kanji are "living spirit" but it is often translated as "grudge" or "vengeful spirit". Sometimes it is even "doppleganger".

Chapter 315: 乙女の記憶
Otome no kioku

(Otome's Memory)
Finally reuniting with his mother Rinne starts to greet her before Sabato rushes in to ask where she has been. She promptly smashes him with her scythe and sends him flying. Unfortunately she does not recognize Rinne despite being friendly and warm towards him. Sabato explains that his wife's memory is stuck at a point earlier in her life prior to giving birth to Rinne. Sabato then uses demon fireworks to summon evil spirits and watches as his son and wife spring into action to deal with the malevolent spirits. The loosed spirits go to the little girl who resembles Rinne's mother, Otome. En route Otome talks about her husband being lazy and speaks briefly about her young son, Rinne. Before Rinne can explain to her that he is her son they see the little girl running to the street being hounded by the ghosts. Rinne quickly saves her and when the little girl looks up she notices Otome and comments that she recognizes her from somewhere. As Rinne tries to press Ichigo to remember where she has seen his mother before high above them in the sky Otome is crackling with energy as she watches them.

Chapter 316: 失踪のいきさつ
Shissou no ikisatsu

(The History of the Disappearance)
Rinne, Ichigo and Sakura watch as Otome glows brightly and then vanishing, turning into a channeling doll that Sabato had created in the image of his late wife. The doll loses its grip on her staff and it falls knocking Ichigo out cold. Sabato explains that he had to use the only picture he had of Otome to create the doll, and that was the image from her platinum shinigami license which explains why the copy's memory was stuck in the past. Rinne demands to know why his father would do such a horrendous thing and Sabato explains that he wanted to hear the truth directly from his wife's mouth. He explains that he thought their lives were going well, Rinne had just been born and everyone seemed so happy and then one day he found her sandal on the bank of the Sanzu River beneath the Wheel of Reincarnation. As Sabato goes on with the story suddenly Ichigo hits him with the scythe, explaining that she now remembers everything. She asks Rinne if he is her son all grown up and he nods that he is. Sabato sadly asks if she killed herself because he pawned her scythe though Ichigo did not realize he had done so. She explains when Rinne was taking his first steps he knocked over a bag of Sabato's things and she found some books in the bag. Trying to protect him she hurried out of the house to throw the ledgers in the Sanzu River when a herd of water buffalo stampeded through and carried her off to the Wheel of Reincarnation. She has gone through many lives since that time, initially she was reincarnated as a killifish, then a canary and an ant-eater before finally being reborn as Ichigo, a human girl. When Sakura asks why she felt the need to go and dump thing bag in the Sanzu River Ichigo seems forlorn and says she had hoped to take that secret to the grave but now she feels she must confess.

Chapter 317: ウソと真実
Uso to shinjitsu

(Lies and Truths)
Ichigo explains that she met Sabato during a shinigami flower viewing and that they fell in love at first sight as they chatted following the festival. Otome tells Sabato that she is younger than him and they seem to have a pleasant conversation. Sabato actually proposed to her the day they met and Otome promised to give her her answer within three days. She happily said yes and they seeemed to have had a very wonderful courtship and marriage, Ichigo even explains how fond she was of Sabato's parents. Eventually however Ichigo starts to speak about the fateful day when she discovered the book that caused her accident. She explains that it the book in question was a high school year book. Rinne and Sakura are confused about why that would cause such a fuss, but Sabato says the book was in his belongings because he wanted to see what his wife looked like when she was in high school. As it turns out the year book revealed that Otome had lied about her age, she was actually older than Sabato when they got married and she was trying to destroy the evidence when she was swept along to the Wheel of Reincarnation. Sabato takes the news surprisingly well until she says that she's actually only two years younger than Tamako, his mother. Everyone is shocked but Sabato appears to process this news tolerably well after the initial surprise wears off. Rokumon asks what they will do now, if they'll try to start their relationship over, but Sabato explains that the age difference now makes that impossible since his wife is now an elementary school student. She says the same, that her new life makes it impossible. Sabato tells her he will come to visit when he has time but tries to sneak away with her scythe to pawn once more before Rinne kicks him out the window. Rinne and Sakura say their good nights to little Ichigo and the child hands Rinne a 500 yen coin telling him that she is still his mother and come to her when he needs help. Sadly when Rinne gets home Rokumon informs him that he spent 2000 yen on all the items used in his exorcisms to help his mother and that he actually lost money in the end.

Chapter 318: 白い霊
Shiroi rei

(White Ghost)
One Tuesday morning at school Sakura spies a solid white ghost in the shape of a young man, the can not make out any features of his face or body due to his unusual white coloring but notices that a solid white line appears wherever he has walked. Looking around the schoolyard Sakura sees the lines crisscrossing everywhere but no one else seems to be aware of them. Inside a third year student named Hazuki Okita shows Rinne a strange message she received on her phone. It states that it wants her to go up on the school roof at 6 am the next morning and look down at the school grounds. Examining the e-mail Rinne notices that there is no sender listed which is a cause for concern. Rinne inquires if there is anyone she suspects could have sent the text and the only person she suggests is a freshman named Shirashi who she knew in junior high, but she thinks this is impossible because soon after she gave him her e-mail address he died in an accident. She says she had gotten similar messages from him before but one day when she went to look off the roof of the school it had snowed and all she could see were foot prints traipsing back and forth in in front of the school and nothing else. Later Rinne and Sakura find footsteps leading up to the roof where they find the white ghost looking over the edge of the roof. A shove from Rinne causes white powder to waft off the ghost revealing it is indeed the deceased Shiraishi. It seems he had tried to write messages to Hazuki on the grounds of the school but weather and students always ruined his attempts. Finally one night he used a line-marker for drawing on the sports field to write a message to her only to run out of the white powder halfway through. He rode his bicycle to buy more but got in an accident and died on the way back. Rinne and Sakura decide to help him move on by allowing him to borrow Rinne's haori in order to write a message Hazuki will be able to see. The message confesses his love for her and the following morning the ghost intently watches as Hazuki arrives looking very sleeping to see the message. Unfortunately she has her long-term boyfriend in tow and the ghost passes on due to embarrassment and asks Sakura to clean up the message he left.
