Chapter 349: 黒猫失踪
Kuro neko shissou

(The Black Cat Disappearance)
One by one the shinigami notice their black cats have gone missing. Ageha cannot find Oboro, Shoma cannot locate Kurosu and Kain has lost track of Suzu. Even loyal Rokumon has turned up missing when Rinne goes to look for him. Each of the black cat's masters go in search of them in the afterlife and stumble upon a letter advertising a "secret black cat meeting" which gives them their first clue as to their partner's whereabouts. Meanwhile at the meeting Kurosu presides over the affair but when Rokumon asks him what the meeting is supposed to be about, he admits that he himself has no idea. He explains that these secret meetings are held roughly every one hundred years and that he could find no prior records to help better understand the point of them because older cats simply tore up the paper scrolls for fun like they would do with a ream of wrapping paper. Suddenly Kuroboshi steps forward, saying that he was there a century ago at the last meeting, but even he has difficulty recalling what they did. Oboro inquires if perhaps it is a protest rally against the shinigami and since Kurosu has no other ideas he pretends that Oboro has correctly guessed what they are there for. Rinne and dozens of other shinigami arrive where the meeting is being held only to find Oboro sitting high atop the cat condo high-rise shouting angrily down to them. Rinne has the added problem of finding Matsugo is there as well looking for his own black cat.

Chapter 350: 黒猫秘密集会の謎
Kuro neko himitsu shuukai no nazo

(The Mystery of the Black Cat Secret Rally)
Sakura notices Renge rushings with her black cat, Tama, to the secret black cat meeting. Elderly Tama explains that she forgot about the meeting entirely but Renge knows this will be an excellent opportunity to spend some time with Kain. At the meeting Oboro is leading the black cats in a poorly planned revolt against their shinigami partners from high atop his cat condo fortress. Most of the black cat's plans to defend themselves back fire- a huge black cat falls asleep rather than defending the tower, while the balls and toilet paper that the black cats throw at the shinigami simply distract the cats rather than proving any obstacle for the humans. Rinne cannot believe that Oboro would waste such precious toilet paper and knocks him on the head, easily subduing him. Matsugo promises to get all the leftover toilet paper for Rinne as the red-headed shinigami moves higher up the cat condo in search of Rokumon. At the top of the tower Renge drops off Tama before heading off in search of Kain. Old Tama explains to the others that because she was the youngest at the last meeting one hundred years ago she was entrusted with the records of the event which she has brought with her tonight. Reading through them they realize that they were supposed to be having a meeting once a year rather than once a century as they believed the shinigami had dictated to them. They also learn that the meetings were initially only open to the black cats but later shinigami joined in to play with the black cats and were welcome at the meetings. Rokumon is relieved to know that there is no reason he should be fighting with Rinne. From Tama's case they produce a huge can of tuna but realize that the label on the back indicates they will need a shinigami's scythe to remove the lid. Rokumon realizes he can get Rinne to help and leaps out of the tower and tries to snatch Rinne's scythe, but misses leaving Rinne to think that Rokumon joined the other cats in trying to attack him.

Chapter 351: 黒猫秘密集会の裏歴史
Kuro neko himitsu shuukai no urarekishi

(The History of the Black Cat Secret Rally)
Rokumon surprises Rinne as she continues his attack to try and steal his scythe to use to open the tuna can all the black cats desire. Rinne and the other shinigami, however, do not know what their partners are up to and cannot help but feel betrayed by their cat friends turning on them. Suzu tries to steal Kain's weapon but of course bungles it while her master, aloof as always, simply chides her for acting up and she gives him a silly, inconsequential apology. The other black cats fare no better against their shinigami partners when they try to steal their weapons away. Upstairs Kurosu finds a document in the sealed contained from the past meetings and begins to review it. He soon learns it is a record of wins and losses, showing the frequency of the meetings. Initially the event was once a year and then around the year 1001 it transitioned to being once every century. Kurosu realizes that upon reading the record the black cats began to lose nearly every year time and time again and resented their losses. Because of this they started buying gag gifts for the winning shinigami team. This final gift that the black cats of modern times have been trying to open is one of the stinkiest foods in the world- fermented salted herring. As soon as the cat is opened everyone is overwhelmed by the stench and collapses in disgust.

Chapter 352: 地獄の果実
Jigoku no kajitsu

(Hell Fruit)
Rinne awakens one morning and is shocked to discover a delicious hamburger, French fries and a soda. As soon as he is about to take a bite Masato appears and tosses a bizarre creature onto the table. Masato claims to have purchased the odd item, what he calls a Clione Fruit, at a fruit market in hell. Like its namesake, the tiny aquatic Clione (or sea angel) this fruit that resembles a common orange opens up to reveal a grotesque maw capable of devouring food rapidly. It makes short work of Rinne's fast food and Masato explains that it will eat up any food Rinne has in his home. Rinne quickly hits Masato over the head for coming up with such a childish scheme, but soon Sakura arrives with a bag of oranges for Rinne and Rokumon. Tsubasa arrives at the same moment with four boxes of oranges to give to Rinne, explaining that his parents send them to him during their travels and he has more than he knows what to do with. Masato sees this as his opportunity to once again upset Rinne and he dumps out the hundreds of oranges on the floor and tosses his Clione Fruit into the mix, expecting it to devour the entire pile and drive Rinne to tears. Rokumon tries to flee with Sakura's bag of oranges but Masato puts up a barrier trapping everyone (himself included) inside Rinne's apartment. Beneath the pile of oranges they can hear the Clione Fruit snoring in the pile of oranges and so Rinne organizes the fruit into a tower on his table and decides that they will eat all of them until they can find and destroy the Clione Fruit to save the remainder. Masato eats his first orange and decides that they are delicous. To further anger Rinne he starts to eat oranges five at a time, shoving them into his mouth hoping that once the Clione Fruit wakes up it will destroy what he has not eaten already. Eventually however Masato passes out from overstuffing himself and the snores of the fruit can be heard at the bottom of the pile. It leaps up, awakening and starting to devour the leftover oranges, but Rinne and Tsubasa get in one anothers way when they try to destroy the Clione Fruit. Masato wakes up uses his hellfire to torch the entire pile of oranges, destroying everything, his Clione Fruit included. The next day at school Sakura gives Rinne a bag of oranges from her mother and despite stuffing himself the previous day he is only too happy to enjoy more free food no matter what it is.

Chapter 353: HOTが怖い
HOT ga kowai

(Afraid of HOT)
On a cool winter's day, Sakura and her friends stop by the hot beverage vending machine where Sakura glimpses the feet of a ghost slipping through the ceiling. Rinne is seeing his latest client, a second-year student named Kasumi Hosokawa. She is accompanied by her boyfriend Jo Uwaki, who she says she was going to see when the ghost first appeared. Initially there is some discussion that the ghost is connected to Jo somehow, but Rinne silently notices that Kasumi does not truly seem jealous of the spirit that keeps haunting her, suggesting that she does not actually believe the spectral visitor is tied to her boyfriend. Sakura arrives and offers everyone a hot drink from the vending machine while Rinne hopes to solve the ghost problem by selling a repelling charm to help keep the spirit away. Soon enough as the pair walk past the vending machine the ghost arrives and tries to attack with a baseball bat only for Rinne's ward to drive it away. Kasumi notices that the spirit held a baseball bat from her room which she used to smash the drink machine before fleeing. At home the ghost appears again, a plump girl ghost that Rinne is able to paint using one of his color paint balls. When the spirit next attacks it seems as if it has gained a good deal of weight before suddenly shedding it all quickly. Rinne realizes from the ghosts behavior that it is not actually a ghost but an image or feeling strongly connected to Kasumi. It seems the image was created by her strong desire to drink the hot chocolate at from the vending machine but her worry about growing fat from doing so.

Chapter 354: 何が出るかな?
Nani ga deru ka na?

(What's Coming Out?)
With Halloween now over, Raito and Refuto are left with old merchandise to try and push in order to make a little extra money. Rinne once again is roped into testing their latest scheme involving playing cards with images of ghosts printed on them. When a card is played the ghost emerges and if the shinigami is able to capture them a sum of money appears. Initially Rinne is mildly intersted, as anything that helps him with his financial issues is a potential boon, but as the monetary amounts begin to rise he takes the offer more and more seriously. Raito and Refuto however are using ghosts and evil spirits that are particularly hard on scythes and try to charge more money for the repairs than what Rinne is winning from taking on the spirits. An overweight, pizza eating ghost smears Rinne's scythe with cheese and grease before Rinne manages to dispatch him and finally Rinne is offered a set of ghostly wasps worth 30,000 yen. Rinne smartly dumps the card in Raito and Refuto's home and lets the wasps attack their masters instead of dealing with them himself.

Chapter 355: ツリーの中に
Tsurii no naka ni

(In the Tree)
Sakura, Miho and Rika are all admiring a beautiful Christmas tree when suddenly an explosion seems to fire off inside of it leaving everyone to flee in shock. Tsubasa arrives to investigate and his sacred ashes reveal Rinne, Rokumon and the ghost of a young man all climbing around inside the Christmas tree. The ghost reveals that because the tree is such a popular date spot he hid a ring inside one of the gift boxes hung from the tree. The ghost explains that he hoped to give a turquoise ring (her birthstone) to a girl from his college. At the last minute she texts to cancel their date and the boy races along on his bicycle to retrieve the ring to give to her in person yet an accident leads to his death en route. Rinne gives the ghost a "matching balloon" that he can inflate while thinking about what item he'd like to find. While he thinks of the ring and puffs on the balloon it inflates into the shape of a hand that zips around the tree and manages to find the ring in seconds. Just as the ghost gets the ring back they notice the girl he had hoped to give the ring to arriving at the tree after she had claimed she would be unable to meet him there. The ghost gives her the ring before passing on, leaving Tsubasa and Sakura there to see that the girl actually had a date with another college student while Rinne realizes that he did not get paid yet again.

Chapter 356: 幸運のおみくじ
Kooun no omikuji

(Good Luck Omikuji)
Sakura, Miho and Rika are all visiting a shrine to receive their omikuji fortunes for the new year where they discuss the rumor going around that a ghost will appear when you receive your fortune from the omikuji machine. Sure enough a high-school aged ghost appears and snatches up their fortune and sends everyone but Sakura fleeing. He seems irritated that Rika received a good fortune and he angrily throws it away. Just then Rinne shows up as he has been asked by the shrine priests to investigate the haunting. The ghost tells them that when he was ten years old he came to visit the shrine to pray for good luck in his calligraphy class when he received an omikuji telling him he would have "bad luck". He explains that not only did he pass his test he would go on to become the 5th ranked calligrapher in his age group nationwide. He continues to excel in life until he later revisited the temple and was relieved to get a good fortune only to die crossing the street in front of the shrine a short time later. The ghost wants another fortune before he can pass on, but he cannot phase into the machine to take one. Tsubasa explains that would be stealing from the powers that guard the shrine and so Rinne gives the ghost his haori so he can become tangible again and buy his own fortune. Of course Rinne has to give the ghost the 100 yen needed to make the purchase, something that is very difficult for Rinne. Unfortunately the ghost receives "luck" the most middle of the road, neutral fortune he could get. Rinne tries to make Tsubasa pay for his next set of fortunes, but Tsubasa says he does not carry cash and only has his bank card. Sakura then volunteers to pay, but Tsubasa stops her, insisting that Rinne should pay. He has to go through with it when Sakura makes the comment that the only time he has smiled today was when he thought she would pay instead of him. Rinne continues to waste money as the ghost only receives inconclusive fortunes until finally Rokumon goes into the afterlife to buy a "reconciliation magnet" a device which will ensure he gets the fortune he wants. Unfortunately it fails and he gets "luck" once last time which devastates Rinne. The ghost gives up, ties his fortune to the rail and departs as the priest explains that they do not put the "bad luck" fortune in on New Year's Day as that would be inauspicious for anyone that pulled it.

Chapter 357: 家にいるのも
Uchi ni irumono

(Staying at Home)
Rinne receives a letter in the weather hutch from a woman who says she can hear something running around in her house, but she has only just barely glimpsed it. It seems to be a small person, but no one else has noticed it. Because she and her husband work all day, she is worried about leaving her daughter home alone with whatever this thing is. Unlike the rest of Rinne's cases, this woman has included 5,000 yen for Rinne to investigate. Rinne brings Sakura along with him, and when Sakura arrives she immediately recognizes the house as that of Ichigo, Rinne's mother who has been reincarnated as a child. Both are surprised that Ichigo is wearing a sick mask when they arrive but otherwise says she has not noticed anything unusual in her home. Rinne and Sakura can both hear something scampering upstairs, but still Ichigo insists that she hears nothing. Rinne dashes upstairs and trips over masking tape that has been stretched across the hallway. Finally Ichigo confesses that she believes they are up against a possessed doll that she had chased for ten years prior to her reincarnation. Suddenly the doll appears and Ichigo tells Rinne to catch it for her before collapsing to the ground. The doll leaps out at Rinne with some of its wooden teeth flashing as if it were trying to bite him. Rinne immediately notices some of the doll's teeth are painted black as if they were supposed to be missing. As Rinne catches the doll, Sakura sits with Ichigo who seems to be in extreme pain. The doll that allegedly gave Ichigo so much trouble is easily caught by Rinne who removes his mother's sick mask to reveal a severely swollen jaw from a very bad toothache. Rinne notices the doll has a small meter on it that has turned red, indicating that it is no longer functioning as it is supposed to. Rather than being a possessed doll, it is actually a doll designed to ward off the pain of its owner, a bad luck absorbing doll. Ichigo was using the doll to absorb the pain of her toothache but the doll could no longer absorb anymore of her pain. Rinne takes his mother to the dentist to have her teeth drilled and manages to make 10,000 yen for successfully getting rid of the doll as well.

Chapter 358: 火鉢の使い方
Hibachi no tskaikata

(How to Use a Hibachi)
One of Sakura's classmates digs out an old ceramic urn and decides to fill it with water to keep goldfish and waterlilies in. However the urn turns over, dumping its contents out. Again the girl tries to use it as a flower pot but it falls over once again. Despite the pot being in perfect condition something prevents it from keeping upright. With no other use for it, she gives the pot to Rinne who immediately fills it with sand and charcoal to turn it into a hibachi that he can build fires in to keep warm. Sakura sits with him in his darkened, powerless apartment when suddenly a ghost appears that seems connected with his new hibachi. Suddenly the ghost of a girl named Sayo Hitomi appears wearing an old fashioned kimono and marches over to Rinne's table, gathers his letters and tosses them into the fire of the hibachi. She explains that her sister, Asa, would often get love letters from boys at school and share them with Saya who was too ill to attend school herself. She explains that because her parents were so strict her Asa asked Sayo to burn the letters when she finished reading them. Sayo, because of her illness, never fell in love and died shortly after her sister married. She said she felt so frustrated by this that she could not pass on, but as she speaks the charcoal in the hibachi begins to die out and Sayo starts to fade away. Once it is restoked she appears once more, but constantly fades whenever Rinne's supply of charcoal runs low. He has to waste his "expensive" supply to get Sayo to continue her story and she finally reveals that she spoke to her sister after her death. She asked her sister if she was happy, but the way she said it suggested she was spiteful of Asa. Asa countered that Sayo must be lingering and not passing on because of her jealousy at the love letters she showed her so many years previously. Years passed and each time Asa would use the hibachi Sayo would appear and ask her if she was happy. Eventually, many years later, she admitted that her marriage was not a happy one. Sayo finally admits that one day she found an unopened letter in her room, read it, and found that it was a marriage proposal. Rather than giving it to her sister she burned it without ever sharing it, thinking it was like all the other letters. Because her sister never married that man her life was always a disappointment for he had been her true love. Rinne uses a paper doll to summon the spirit of Asa, now an elderly woman who said she heard what her sister said about the letter. She and her sister begin to argue, and Asa tells her that she would visit once a year and ask if she was happy, but on that day she was not, while overall her life was a good one. Sayo says she hates her sister, thinking that she had her comeuppance all this time. The two continue to argue all night while Rinne has exhausted his modicum of charcoal to keep warm.
