The starry-eyed look was a style that made its appearance in the eyes of anime and manga characters in the late 1960s and early 1970s, most famously in Kyojin no Hoshi, a famous baseball manga. Takahashi has parodied this overly-dramatic style before with Urusei Yatsura's Tobimaro Mizunokoji.

Rinne and Sakura's gym teacher Suzuki shows the same burning desire for sports as his famous manga predecessors through his starry-eyes.
