I think that perhaps if he had gotten away with some of his attempts, it might have totally destroyed any chances he'd have with Kyoko and push her toward Mitaka. The unnamed television show that Kyoko and Godai are watching is Kohaku Uta Gassen, which translates as the "Red and White Song Battle" and is a staple of Japanese New Years Eve programming. The most popular male and female musicians of the year are invited to perform with the women being on the red team and the men on the white team.

Relevance to Maison Ikkoku

When Godai spends New Year's Eve in Kyoko's room, this is the program they watch on television. Worth noting is that when this chapter was originally published (the January 15th 1982 issue, which of course meant it was drawn much earlier) the television announcer proclaims the red team as victors, but in reality, at the 1981 Kohaku Uta Gassen, the white team actually won. Another bit of triva is that Yuki Saito actually debuted Kanashimi yo Konnichiwa at the 1986 Kohaku Uta Gassen.
