O-Bon
Japanese Living

O-Bon is celebrated from August 13th through the 16th. At this time of the year the Japanese like to return to their hometowns or villages to take part in O-Bon ceremonies that mark the return to Earth of all departed ancestors. At the end of the rituals, candlelit paper laterns are set to float down rivers and out to sea, to mark the return of the spirits to their own world.

Relevance to Maison Ikkoku

Kyoko is trapped in a dried-up well at the local O-Bon festival. When Godai and Mitaka try to help her out, they too become stuck.
