Payphones
Japanese Living
taken
from the Maison Ikkoku VHS release
Unlike the U.S., where there are only a few variations on the standard payphone, in Japan, payphones come in a variety of colors, each indicating something different. For example, the majority of the payphones you'll encounter on a typical Japanese street are of the "green" variety (meaning they're constructed of green plastic, and accept prepaid calling cards, in addition to coins), while phones used in small businesses and boarding houses are pink. In fact the Japanese title of Episode 14, "Momo-Iro Denwa ni Go-Yôshin!" ("Beware the Pink-Colored Phone"), is a reference to the pink payphone Kyoko installs, with an added significance which comes from the other meaning of the word momo-iro: sexy, or amorous.
