Sawa Kannagi

Sawa was charged with protecting Mermaid Hill, a hollowed out cave where a mermaid and her various body parts were kept. The lure of immortality was too great though, and led Sawa to test the blood of the mermaid on her dying sister Towa. The blood kept Towa alive, but deformed her arm and caused her hair to turn completely white.

Their father decided that Towa must be locked in the basement for the rest of her life, and Sawa went along with this. Sawa eventually married and had children, living a normal life, while her sister stayed in her cell. When Mana arrives, Towa uses her in order to force Sawa to reveal the location of Mermaid Hill. Sawa finally relents and learns that her sister has planned to force her to eat the flesh of the mermaid as she had done to her decades earlier.

The Meaning Behind the Name

Sawa is made up of two kanji meaning "to help" and "harmony". Kannagi's three kanji mean "souless tree".
