A Band of Young Ruffians

A Band of Young Ruffians
不良青年団
Furyou seinendan

An adventurous short from Takahashi's college years, interestingly she had already made her professional debut when this story was published in the Bibito dojinshi, however for a brief time she was still publishing in fanzines while making one-off's in Shonen Sunday.

This story deals with an undercover police officer who stands in for a client's daughter he was assigned to protect. The Officer is kidnapped in the girl's place and handed off multiple times between kidnappers in the Band of Young Ruffians gang, before ultimately being taken to their leader who wants a date.

Published In:
  • Bibito Vol. 3
  • Shonen Sunday Graphic: Urusei Yatsura Vol. 2
Publication Date: November 1978

Notes:
  • Spark Enjou, a blonde, recurring character in much of Takahashi's doujinshi work appears in this story as well.
  • One of the kidnappers practices ushi no toki mairi (丑の時参り) which is a traditional way to curse someone in Japan. The practioner can usually be seen wearing a headband with candles on their head, carrying a straw doll, hammer and nails. The straw doll is used as an effigy and is nailed into a tree for seven days straight in order to deliver a killing curse. Hikaru Gosunkugi from Ranma 1/2 is a well-known practioner of ushi no toki mairi. This character will later appear in chapter 4 of Urusei Yatsura.
  • As seen on a police box, the story takes place in the Meijiro (目白) district of Tokyo.
  • A Dappya Man from Those Selfish Aliens and later, Urusei Yatsura appears in the story.
