 Japan is such a crowded and congested country that germs can be spread pretty easily. The Japanese are notoriously considerate of others, and so when they fall ill they usually wear one of these flu masks to prevent them from blowing germs all over the place. Relevance to Urusei Yatsura Ataru dons a flu mask and sunglasses to disguise himself when he's hiding from Lum. At one point Lum comes down with an illness from space and wears a mask to keep from spreading it, but Ataru decides to sell "secondhand kisses" by letting various boys kiss her germ filled mask. |
