The Inuyasha Narrative, Part 26: The Underworld, The Land of Silence.
Translation provided by: Robby Stine of Kanabits

Inuyasha Wideban Extra Vol 26 The Underworld, the border between the worlds of the living and the dead.

The Underworld and the path to it are referenced a number of times in Inuyasha. I’m not all that clear on what the Underworld is like myself, but I guess it’s a place for people who can’t fully die. Like the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead. So that’s why there are people who can return from it.

At the very least, it’s not part of our plane of existence. It’s not fully the world of the dead, so people who have the ability to return from it can. Sesshomaru was able to go and return safely, but that was because he had the potential to do so.

A normal person wouldn’t have been able to do what he did. After all, Rin died there, and Kohaku probably wouldn’t have fared as well as he did without the power of the Shikon shard.

The Underworld is a silent world of death.

The Underworld looked kind of like outer space, but not for any particular reason. It is not outer space. I just happened to have that screen tone on hand at the time.

In Inuyasha, the Underworld isn’t reminiscent of hell, just an image of the silence of death. No sound, and no light.

Inuyasha’s Father’s Skeleton was in the real world of the dead.

Inuyasha’s Father’s grave is located in a different world than the Underworld. In the true world of the dead. His dad’s body is in a kind of elephant graveyard. You could think of it as an area somewhere in the netherworld.

Sesshomaru’s growth on the path to the Underworld.

Sesshomaru’s journey to and back from the Underworld was an important event and one that involved Tenseiga. In the end, not only did Sesshomaru grow as a character, Tenseiga also became stronger. Thinking of it like that, it was a key moment in the story.
