Grandpa Kiba

Nanoka's grandfather is a kindly old man who has helped raise his granddaughter after her parent's death eight years earlier. Nanoka mentions that he was often sick and hospitalized when she was little but since the death of her parents he has made a miraculous recovery.

Eventually Nanoka begins to believe that due to Byoki escaping into the present day that her grandfather may possibly be possessed by the cat demon. This is further hinted at when she learns that their maid, Fune Uozumi, who was hired at the same time of Byoki's arrival, has been giving her a drink designed to keep her weak. To Nanoka her grandfather's miraculous recovery can only be explained by Byoki's influence upon him and Fune Uozumi confirms that when Nanoka disappears into the past that grandpa becomes listless and sleeps almost constantly.

In truth Nanoka realizes that her grandfather is not possessed by any evil spirits. His recovery was through a strength of will that he needed to care for his now orphaned grandchild though it is possible Byoki used his power to extend the man's life to ensure Nanoka could grow up to be a vessel for him. Despite Nanoka's lenghty absenses into the past, her grandfather has managed to keep a calm and level head, even refusing to call the police when Nanoka disappeared for an extended period without letting him know.

The Meaning Behind the Name - おじいちゃん

Nanoka refers to her grandfather simply as "Ojiichan" (おじいちゃん) meaning "grandpa" or "grandad". Whether or not he is a "Grandpa Kiba" or if he is Nanoka's maternal grandfather (and consequently would have an different last name) has not been established.
