Hakubi is a powerful metal-wielder, expertly manipulating the substance into blades, and automatons that follow his orders and act a small militia that follow him at all times. He has used them with brutal efficiency in his quest to explore the limits of his unnaturally lengthened life.
During the Heian Period, Mao and Hyakka knew Hakubi as one of their master's most skilled assassins. He would disappear for weeks and return with gifts in tow- payments for successful murders of political rivals of their patrons. After the destruction of the onmyoji school, Hakubi became an immortal and tested the limits of his life by facing off in wars through the ages. Again and again he died, only to awaken a short time later with no wounds or scars. It was not until a fateful encounter in the early 1900s with Hyakka, a fellow immortal from the same school, that Hyakka was severely burned and his wounds refused to mend. In the battle he was able to slice out Hyakka's eye cementing the two as dangerous rivals. Hakubi had long resented Hyakka, disliking that the fire user had joined the Goko Clan due to his family's status and influence.
It was sometime during the Tokugawa Period that Hakubi investigated stories of someone peddling life-extending techniques. His quest took him to the water temple of Shiranui where he met Sana and entered into an alliance with them.
In later centuries Hakubi continued to test the limits of his life by continuing to fight in wars. Most recently he survived the Russo-Japanese War where he served under the alias "Captain Shirasu". Here he wears an iron mask to hide the scars inflicted upon him from his encounter with Hyakka. By the 1920s Hakubi has begun a plan to reestablish the Goko Clan and has started to gather cursed items that had disappeared from the clan's storehouse after their collapse during the Heian era.
