The mysterious bandaged man is the primary suspect in a number of murders. Initially his hidden face leaves Mao believing he could be Byoki, but instead he is a bundle of spiders in a corpse.

Since her childhood Shoko has had limited precognitive powers. As time passed her powers dwindled, but the cult her father built around her skills continued to draw in money from followers. Regardless of the credibility of her skills she predicts the Great Kanto Earthquake.

Sogen is the second-in-command of Shoko's cult. In truth he is the girl's father who is a former practioner of Mikkyo Buddhism. He has experimented with curses put turns to more hands-on attempts at murder to ensure his daughter's prognostications come true. The kanji in his name means "mysterious religion".

Nun/Flea Ayakashi (修道女/ノミの妖)

A group of flea ayakashi disguise themselves as nuns who have set up a church atop the guardian stone that Byoki has been sleeping beneath for centuries. They are able to gorge themselves on Mao's blood- something most demons are unable to do because they have subsisted on Byoki's blood that bubbles up from the ground.

Genbu is a massive shikigami that Mao summons to aid him when he needs the help of a water-based creature in battle. When not in use the giant turtle is held inside a wooden effigy.

Nanoka's mother and father were killed in a car accident eight years ago. The accident that robbed them of their lives threw her back in time to the 1920s where she absorbed Byoki's blood and attained a curse like Mao's.

Ruthless and mysterious, the masked master of Mao's onmyodo temple is also the father of Sana. He intended to use Mao as a sacrafice and sells his skills at cursing others to the highest bidder. Behind his mask are grotesque monstrous features.

Born into a wealthy family, Tanehiko is a rapist and serial killer who loves to torture women. He hires Kamon as his manservent and is ultimately killed by having his heart ripped out of his mouth.

Before being transformed into the powerful demon Byoki, Haimaru was a pet cat belonging to Sana. He was mistrustful of humans with the exception of his mistress and Mao.

Mokuzu was a simple groundskeeper at the temple where the onmyodo studied. He lusted for power and begged anyone he met to teach him their skills. Only Shiranui relented and kept the man alive for centuries as an underling. It was Mokuzu that threw Haimaru into the kodoku pit that transformed the cat into Byoki. Mokuzu's name is written with the kanji for "seaweed", "old story" and "bad/negative".

Beniko is Kamon's shikigami. She serves as his assistant in much the same way Otoya works with Mao.

The daughter of a wealthy family, she had her life extended by Shiranui. Kamon uses her as he picks up the trail of Shiranui who is in hiding.

Mizuchi (蛟)

This masked young man is a shikigami created by Shiranui. He wields the spear that impaled Byoki and is able to use water based onmyoji powers like his creator. He serves as the go-between for Shiranui and Renji as well. The kanji in his name is a reference to a dragon-like creature.

Shigeru is an impoverished dead child who's mother was tricked into luring Mao to her home in order for Shiranui's shikigami to attack him and destroy his poison jar.

A gifted water onmyoji, Masago often worked with Shiranui. While her gifts were acknowleded Shiranui was overlooked and mistreated. Her name means "sand" which is appropriate as she was first seen on a beach.

A doctor tasked with caring for Yoshifusa after he flees his home when strangers move in. Despite Dr. Shibasato being retired he looked after Yoshifusa in his youth.

Yoshifusa Arimiya (有宮芳房)

A sickly young man who's has strange visitors arrive at his home after the Great Kanto Earthquake, he flees and falls into the care of Dr. Shibasato. His last name, Arimiya, (有宮) means "to have a palace".

This sea dragon is Shiranui's shikigami, much like Genbu is to Mao and Suzaku is to the Otori clan. After Shiranui's legs were amputated he took his new legs from Kairyu, however it ensures that Shiranui has to remain in the water.

Sengokudayu (千獄太夫)

Sengokudayu is an onmyodo master of lesser stature. He runs the orphanage where Mao and Daigo were raised. If a student shows promise after years of study under him they have the chance to move to the Ko estate to continue their training. The "dayu" portion may be part of his title rather than his name as it means "lord steward" (太夫/dayu).

One of the most gifted earth onmyodo, Daigo grew up in the same orphanage as Mao prior to going to the temple to study. Sana secretly loved him despite her having to marry Mao who was the chosen successor of the school.

Domon was a medical student who tried to save his dying wife when Natsuno appeared and taught him some basic earthen medicinal techniques. His poor understanding of the onmyoji eventually lead to the death of his patients. His name means "earth gate".

Yae worked at a bar to help pay her husband's way through medical school. One night a jealous customer nearly decapitated her. Natsuno arrived and mended her injury but as years went on the onmyoji kept her artificially alive and she became doll-like. Her name means "multi-layered".

Shobo breaks his leg while playing and his mother takes him to see Domon. Domon is able to repair the break, but Mao discovers the poorly executed technique is starting to turn the boy's body into earth.

Ichima Kagami (加神一馬)

The elder brother of the Kagami family, Ichima also works as a policeman. Ichima had the duty of taking possession of the demon that is passed down through the family through the generations. The creature allegedly brought prosperity to the Kagamis however Ichima cannot keep the creature under control.

The two younger siblings of Ichima and Soma. Both of them are too young to realize what is happening within their family. Hakubi brings both boys to live with Soma at the Goko Clan's hideout where he begins training them to inherit the beast should Soma fail to live up to his expectations.

Shoko attends the same school as Kagari and Eriko. She is cursed by Kagari and forced to sleep for five days straight while having to endure constant nightmares of her own death. When her friends try to confront Kagari about what was done to Shoko they too are cursed.

Eriko (衿子)

Eriko and Shoko are considered "S", a 1920s slang term for particularly close female friends. When Shoko is cursed Eriko tries to help but winds up ensnared by Kagari who tries to lay claim to Eriko before tiring of her quickly.

Kanae was gifted the cursed sword Hanei by her father. The sword possessed her and caused her to murder a number of people in the neighborhood, starting with the burglers who broke into her home and killed her new husband and household staff. Kanae's name is written with two kanji, the first for "answer" and the second is the counter for long thin objects such as swords.

A ghost that lingers around his daughter, Mao is able to communicate with the spirit to learn that he passed the cursed sword onto his daughter in order to prevent the curse from attaching itself to him.

A reptilian ayakashi swordsmith with metallic flesh, he is responsible for helping to reforge the cursed Hanei blade into Nanoka's Akanemaru. As her skills improve in using it, Meimeido continues to tend to the sword.

Renji's mother is an alleged philanthorpist who has adopted a number of orphaned children and given them a home. Privately however she is cruel, abusive and prostitutes the children that she takes in, selling them to the highest bidder.

Tsuyu is Renji's sister. She was trained to play the yueqin as a way was to enhance her asking price when she was sold to clients. She is eventually sold to an abusive drunk in order to prevent Renji from being sold into a similar situation. She is ultimately beaten to death after Renji tries to intervene to save her. Her name is written with the kanji for "dew" or "tears".

One-Armed Ayakashi (隻手の妖)

This ayakashi has removed his arm and placed it into an expensive piece of luggage to encourage vagrants, thiefs and other lower-class individuals to steal it from him. When they do they are yanked inside the bag and taken to the pharmacy to be used as ingredients. Because they are fringe individuals no one reports their disappearance. His true identity is a snake ayakashi.

Salamander Ayakashi (山椒魚の妖)

The salamander is the storekeeper of the pharmacy where the one-armed man ayakashi brings his captured humans to be used. When threatened by Natsuno and Nanoka he reveals his gaping mouth and tries to suck them into his maw.

Sasuga is a young water-user that dresses in the garments of a shugendo mountain man. With his conch shell he is able to create floating bubbles of water to drown people on dry land.

Onitake is a yakuza who builds polluting factories in small rural towns. Having ruined Mitazono Village a decade ago he later sets his sights on Mikumari Village. When Mei's father confronted him his men murdered the man and Onitake ordered the other witnesses buried alive.

This humble salesman gets lost in the forest and stumbles upon the perverse trial of Soncho as he is burned to death. The salesman flees and is nearly killed himself thanks to the village headman wearing the Mask of Judgement.

Shokichi is a popular villager who was accused to stealing rice by the village headman. The accusation was without merit but a sham trial using the Mask of Judgement saw him burned to death and his three children orphaned.

Village Headman (村長)

The village headman lives in a remote, mountain village and murders Shokichi due to his jealousy of the man. He then attempts to use the Mask of Judgement to kill his Shokichi's son and the fish salesman who witnesses the earlier murder. The headman found a cursed mask which due to his particularly wicked nature he is able to use despite his lack of proper training.

The son of Shokichi attempts to avenge his father. He hopes to destroy the Mask of Judgement and avenge his father's death. After he is caught he is put on trial in a similar fashion to how his father was executed.

Sonkichi's two youngest children are found hiding on the edge of the village after their brother is subdued and placed on trial. After they contact Mao and Nanoka, they are able to get their soon-to-be-executed brother some aid and save him from the village headman and his Mask of Judgement.

Midori is the daughter of a wealthy family. Her family had hoped that Kamon would accept their marriage arrangement, however Midori died before he could answer their proposal. Kamon soon learned she was reanimated via a soul seed.

The Medicine Dispenser is a man dressed in religious garb that has gained access to soul seeds. He has used this to reanimate Midori, a woman that was in love with Kamon.

Shizuko attempts to elope with Shiro in the middle of the night as angry villagers pursue them. The villagers are attacked by Byoki and Daigo and Shiro is seemingly caught up in the melee. Believing him to be dead, Shizuko attempts to commit suicide by jumping from a waterfall but is saved by Mao. Shizuko is a common name and the spelling is not unusual, the kanji means "quiet child".

Shiro attempts to elope with Shizuko before he is attacked by angry villagers. He is caught up in the brawl between the villagers and Daigo and Byoki. The kanji in his name means "fourth son".

Hazuki Otori (鳳羽月)

Hazuki is a nine year old who was stolen from her mother during the chaos of the Great Kanto Earthquake. A year has passed and she has been told by her kidnapper that her parents died. She has the ability to set fires with her mind and is forced to cause distractions so her abductor can break into houses while people focus on putting out the fires. Her name is written with the kanji for "feather" and "moon". Hazuki's last name, "Otori" (鳳) is written with the kanji meaning "firebird" in Chinese (fenghuang).
