Doomed Megalopolis
Retro Pop Culture
Doomed Megalopolis (known in Japan as Teito Monogatari) is a series of novels (and subsequent live-action films and anime adaptation) written by Hiroshi Aramata. The story is centered around the 1908 era conflict of Yasumasa Hirai (a descendant of the powerful onmyodo Abe no Seimei) and the wicked Yasunori Kato who seeks to destroy Tokyo and disrupt Japan to gain vengence for wrongs committed against his ancestors.
Relevance to MAO
While Mao does not make specific reference to Doomed Megalopolis it touches on many of the same themes and time periods. The villainous Kato is descended from a rogue group of onmyodo (like Mao's group of onmyodo). Abe no Seimei is referenced as well as other historical figures. Aramata's series of novels are often cited as reviving interest in onmyodo which is now frequently a plot-device in many works of popular culture.
