Chapter 269: 相打ち
Aiuchi

(Mutual Destruction)
Ayame attempts to attack Kagari with the shikigami of the Fox Spirit Needle, however her sister's shikigami reveals itself as a hedgehog and fires off countless needles to counter the attack. The needles stab Ayame, but Nanoka uses Akanemaru to create a shield of blood to protect her from any further injuries. Ayame fights back and uses her own shikigami to imbed needles into Kagari's hand while Mao performs a curse on Kagari's hands, causing them to burst into flame whenever she attempts to touch another needle. Mao hopes this will cause her to be of no further use to the Goko Clan, but Kagari simply laughs his attack off and says that Shiranui will undo the curse. As Kagari escapes, Mao rushes to tend to Ayame's wounds. Ayame asks the attack of the Fox Spirit Needle hit Kagari. When Mao confirms that it did, Ayame says that it will poison her sister, eventually killing her when it reaches her heart. Meanwhile, Kagari clings to her hedgehog as it returns to Hakubi's base. Mei intercepts the wounded girl and tends to her, but the poisonous metal energy is quickly travelling through her body to hear heart. Hakubi wastes no time in ordering Mei to prepare Seeds of Haku to use.

Chapter 270: 無力
Muryoku

(Powerless)
Hakubi directs Mei to use the seed of haku on Kagari to ensure that the curse placed on her by Ayame does not reach her heart and kill her. Mei tells Hakubi that the needle's curse is metal-infused and so he should be the one to exorcise it. However Hakubi says it is too late for him to do anything about it. Hearing this stuns Kagari as she lays in bed suffering slowly as the black lines race up her arm towards her heart. Back at the Hosho family home, Mao treats Ayame's wound as she reflects on the idea that she has had to curse her sister to death. She feels remorse for having to do it, but says she could not tolerate the shame of Kagari becoming an assassin for the Goko Clan. Mao too admits that he feels he has failed in protecting Soma from the Goko Clan. Back at their headquarters, Hakubi asks a weak and dying Kagari what she wants them to do for her. She wheezes and says she wants to live, and Hakubi once again asks for Mei to use a seed of haku. Using the seed, it quickly wraps around Kagari's arm and removes the curse before the vines fall away. Having been saved, Hakubi tells Kagari how proud he is of her for working so hard and surviving. Days later, Mei calls on Sasuga and asks if he can remove the fire curse placed on Kagari's hand that Mao cast to ensure she could no longer handle a needle. Sasuga is happy to try, as he is still angry at Mao for destroying his conch shell. With shocking ease, Sasuga blows on Kagari's hand and lifts the curse, ensuring she can once again use her needle tools. Mei asks Kagari to reconsider putting herself in danger but as she picks up her needle she says that she has to repay her debts to the clan. Meanwhile in a dark and lonely room, Soma, now monstrous in appearance writhes on his bed in pain.

Notes:
  • The flashback shows Sosuke's uncle with a seed of haku from chapter 226. Later Sasuga remembers when Mao broke his conch shell, which was in chapter chapter 255.
  • The "haku" (魄) of the seed of haku is a reference to the "yin energy", with its counterpart being "kon" (魂) which is "yang energy". Both of these could also simply be called "spirit". You can read more about this in our cultural notes.
  • The face that Kagami makes with her mouth open after Sasuga breaks Mao's curse on her is called a "diamond-shaped mouth" (ひし形の口/hishigata no kuchi). This comical expression has been used by Takahashi since the 2000s, however it did not originate with her. It was frequently used by the Tamanegi (the Onion Squad) in Mineo Maya's Patalliro! (パタリロ!) and Toshi-chan from Tsubame Kamogawa's Macaroni Horenso (マカロニほうれん荘).
  • Between this chapter and the next, Rumiko Takahashi would publish Keep a Secret (秘密をキープ/Himitsu o Kiipu) in Big Comic Original 2025 Vol. 4.4.

Chapter 271: 弟たち
Ototo-tachi

(Little Brothers)
Weak and struggling in bed, Soma thinks back to Daigo's words, revealing that Hakubi knew Soma's execution of Daigo was nothing but a facade due to Soma not being a part of the Goko Clan battle for succession. In another room of the Goko compound, Soma's bothers, Mitsuma and Shizuma decide that they want to go and see how Soma is doing. The boys know that after Soma's room was damaged, Soma was moved somewhere secret within the compound. They saw Mei taking food to a small room in the basement and try to go see if he is there. Finding the door locked, they send their beast inside to check on Soma. Soma is stunned to see his younger brother, Mitsuma, using a beast and realizes that Hakubi is planning to possibly replace him. The next day when Mei goes to the room, she finds the door has been knocked off its hinges and Soma has escaped. Soma has dressed himself, covered his disfigured face and gone to meet with Mitsuma and Shizuma. He summons his beast and flees with his younger brothers as Mei and Kagari watch. While Mei feels relief that Soma has helped his siblings, Kagari smirks cruelly thinking that Soma is a coward. At Mao's office he sees the flitter of metallic energy and uses a paper talisman to catch some, revealing that it is an iron rat, the creatures created from Soma's body. As Mao and Nanoka chase after the trail of flying iron rats, Hyakka joins them. While Soma and his brothers fly through the air on the beast, a portal opens and Hakubi's metal tendrils flash out as Hakubi appears and asks Soma what he is up to.

Hakubi easily tangles Soma in his metallic sashes and Mao leaps in, cutting them to shreds. Mao asks Soma if he sent out his iron rats to try to bring him to his aid and Soma confirms that he did. Hyakka, Nanoka and Otoya arrive to take Mitsuma and Shizuma to safety as Soma explains how he was tricked into beheading Daigo. Hiding behind an embankment, Kagari watches, remembering that Hakubi told her to retrieve Shizuma and Mitsuma while he distracts Soma. Mao asks Soma if he wishes to leave the Goko Clan, and Soma tells Mao that he came to detest his elder brother, Ichima, for his selfishing in hoarding the beast and refusing to give it to Soma. Now, Soma explains, he knows that Ichima was simply trying to protect him from becoming corrupted by the beast. He tells Mao that Hakubi has given a beast to Mitsuma and asks Mao to exorcise the creature. Hakubi again tells Soma that he is still useful to the Goko Clan as Hyakka attacks. Hakubi summons his own tiger-like beast and it devours Hyakka's flames as Mao leaps in to battle to help protect Soma.

Hyakka leaps right into the mouth of Hakubi's beast and destroys it by heating up from within the creature. Hakubi ask Mao what he will do after he rescues Soma, implying that if the beast within Soma is exorcised Soma would die. Mao says he only cares about helping Soma aid Mitsuma and Shizuma's escape from the Goko Clan. Soma rushes in to help Mao and Hyakka when it looks like Nanoka is going to join the fray. He tells her to stay back and that she should learn to be more feminine before he summons his beast, envelopes it in Hyakka's fire and has its jaws clamp on to Hakubi's arm. Mao slashes Hakubi as the beast holds him in place, badly wounding the soldier. Hyakka attempts to burn him to death but Hakubi teleports away as Soma collapses, his body disintegrating and being pulled piece by piece into Hakubi's portal.

Saigo no kao

(The Face at the End)
Hakubi lingers inside the portal, pulling Soma's decaying body into the Scroll of the Beast that was used by the Kagami family for generations. Hidden at a distance, Kagari watches, shocked that Hakubi has killed Soma for trying to escape. However, Hyakka confronts Hakubi who reveals he would have always re-absorbed Soma's metallic energy, as he understood that was how the beast continued to regeneate generation after generation as it returns to its cursed scroll. The beast in the scroll will now become even more powerful. Hyakka tries to burn Hakubi who teleports away. Mao walks over to Soma's head and closes the dead boy's eyes as Mitsuma and Shizuma look on, distraught. Mao tells the two children that their brother died at peace, knowing he had protected them. Kagari returns to the Goko Clan's hideout where she meets Mei. She is terrified that because she failed to retrieve Shizuma and Mitsuma that she may share Soma's fate. Mei goes to speak with Hakubi who is using the Scroll of the Beast to recuperate from his severe wounds. He tells her to soothe Kagari, though Mei realizes that Soma must have been killed. Mei quietly prays that Soma's brothers will be safe wtih Mao. Back at Mao's office, Tenko has arrived to take the boys to a fire ayakashi who will protect them and keep them hidden in case Hakubi tries to seek them out again. Mao has also been able to exorcise the beast from Mitsuma as well. Everyone goes to meet up with Kamon to update him on what happened in the battle, and how Hakubi used Soma to empower the Scroll of the Beast. Hyakka is surprised that Nanoka is so disturbed by Soma's fate, commenting that he thought she hated Soma. She explains that Hakubi should have still looked out for Soma instead of abusing his trust and manipulating him. They all discuss Daigo's role in setting this into motion when he revealed that Soma had not actually killed him and how that sewed doubt in Soma about Habuki. Hyakka wonders if Daigo might be using Yurako in the same fashion as they all ponder if Daigo will try to destroy the Goko Clan from the inside out.

Chapter 275: 黒髪
Kuro kami

(Raven Haired)
A young woman is set upon while walking home late one evening by an unseen malefactor. At Mao's home, he and Otoya discuss Nanoka seemingly being in mourning over the death of Soma. When Nanoka arrives she brings with her a strange little ayakashi named Kamikiri, a creature that cuts people's hair. Kamikiri explains that there are rumors going around that he has been kidnapping women, but he emphatically says someone else is the culprit. Apparently this kidnapper has been seizing women with dark hair and lifting them into the sky. Nanoka volunteers to act as the bait, but everyone points out her hair is too short. Kamikiri offers her some of the hair he has freshly cut and Ms. Silk Moth offers her a kimono to wear to complete her disguise. Mao makes Nanoka promise not to do anything risky while she acts as bait to lure out the kidnapper and Otoya wonders why Mao is always so serious and never compliments Nanoka on how cute she looks in her disguise. That evening, Nanoka wanders for hours until finally a voice tells her how beautiful her hair is. When she turns to face the voice, she finds a disembodied floating mouth hovering near her that quickly whisks her into the air and flies her away. When she awakens Nanoka she finds herself in the darkness surrounded by the kidnapped young women and the mouth is now joined by an eye. Using Akanemaru she tries to attack it, but her blade passes through the eye without any effect. Mao and Otoya use a strand of hair given to them by Kamikiri to follow Nanoka and manage to track her to an old, decaying temple.

(Moment of Death)
Outside the abandoned temple, Mao struggles to pass through the hair barrier that the evil spirit has errected. He sets up insense to try and weaken the barrier while Nanoka confronts the creature, asking why it has captured these women. The spirit reveals that the hair of living women is more desirable and powerful that that of the dead. Outside Mao finally cuts through the barrier, shocking the evil spirit inside. Outside the spirit attacks Mao, now revealing itself fully as a disembodied woman's head. As Nanoka reunites with Otoya, the ghost of a woman wearing armor stumbles out and vanishes. Otoya and Nanoka watch as her ghost reenacts her death, falling to the ground before being decapitated by unseen assailants. As Mao converses with the spirit as it tangles him in hair, he realizes that the spirit does not know she has died and mistakenly believes her hair saved her from being decapitated. With Mao tangled and unable to help, Nanoka tries to cut the captured women free, but finds the hair uncuttable. Mao tosses Otoya some paper talismen and tells him to have Nanoka cut them, explaining mysteriously that it is not the woman's hair this is keeping her bound to this world.

  • This week's Shonen Sunday featured an advertisement for MAO volume 24.
  • Yuhei Kasakabe's Kakukamata debuted in this issue of Shonen Sunday.
  • "This is no ayakashi. It's an evil spirit." - In Japanese the term used by Mao is "akuryou" (悪霊), quite literally "evil spirit".
  • "Is she from the Warring States period or something?" - In Japanese Nanoka mentions the "Sengoku Jidai" (戦国時代), the time of civil war in Japan from 1467-1568 CE. This is the era in which Takahashi's Inuyasha is set.
  • It is difficult to say with certainty if the ghost's teeth are black simply for dramatic effect, but it is possible they are indicative of a Japanese aesthetic practice of teeth-blackening called "ohaguro" (お歯黒). The practice was achieved using iron shavings and vinegar and lasted from the Heian era through the 19th century when Western traditions began to filter in and saw the practice die out.

Nanoka recognizes the body as wearing the same armor she saw earlier on the ghost that appeared. Suddenly Nanoka's wig comes to life and starts trying to strangle her. Mao tries to speak to the ghost who reveals that she was a part of a bandit gang with her husband. When one of their posse betrayed them, all were beheaded when they were captured by the authoities. However, the ghost reveals that her hair tangled with the executioners blade and even though she was killed she was not truly decapitated. As a result, she remains spiritually connected with her body, just as her head was never truly, fully removed. Mao realizes that rather than try to cut the ghost's hair she should aim at her neck. With a slash of his sword the is able to sever the ghost's bond with the living world. With the ghost dispatched Mao finds a grave labeled "raven-haired mound" and reconsecrates it. Headed home, Nanoka gives the hair back to Kamikiri but before she can take off her 1920s clothes, Mao asks if they can go out and get something sweet to eat together, having commented on how cute she looked in her outfit. As they enjoy their dessert, Mao tells Nanoka that she does not need to try to get over Soma's death so quickly, that he understands her grief.
