Chapter 279: たた二人で
Tata futari de

(The Two of Us)
Yurako explains that though she was not present for the Spell of Pot Binding that granded the five onmyodo at the temple immortality until they kill one another, her ayakashi were there to threaten everyone, thus she too was bound to the spell and granted immortality. As a result, she openly muses that she may be able to kill Daigo. Daigo summons stalagmites to stab at her ayakashi and then flees. He thinks back to when he left Sana, telling her that she would have to stay behind for awhile before they could elope or people would know his staged death was false. Daigo stumbles to Mao's office and warns Nanoka to stay back due to his being infected by the Moss of Earth's Ruin. Daigo passes out, recalling his discussion with Sana centuries ago that the could not bring himself to attack his fellow onmyodo and so he would refuse to participate in the battle for succession. Daigo recalls that Sana asked if he wanted to the rule the Goko Clan, and she fled, as he silently thought that all he wanted was her happiness. Mao summons Kamon to help exorcise the Moss of Earth's Ruin, thankfully healing Daigo before the moss took root. As Daigo sits up and recovers Kamon, Mao and Nanoka ask him about his feelings for Sana and if he really wanted her or the Goko Clan. With a smile, Daigo confesses that in the past he truly wanted the Goko Clan more.

Chapter 280: 初めて見せた表情
Hajimete miseta hyojo

(A New Face)
Daigo explains that he hesitated to take Sana away from the wealthy Goko Clan because he believed she would struggle to live with him in poverty if they were to elope together. Kamon questions this, wondering if perhaps it was Daigo who did not wish to leave the ease and privledge of the Goko Clan behind. Daigo replies that he and Mao were raised in the home for foundlings and that they had a hard life, the Goko Clan's palatial headquarters was heaven by comparison. Kamon asks Daigo when he would have killed the other participants in the battle for succession, but he claims he never would have. Daigo asserts he would have waited until the others had killed off each other. When Kamon asks when he would have killed Mao, he says he would not have done that either, that he had actually warned Mao about Haimaru being Byoki many times. Daigo insists that his actual plan is to see the Goko Clan completely eradicated now and that is interest in Yurako is simply for revenge. Once he has gathered all of the spells and cursed tools of the Goko Clan, he will destroy them. Elsewhere, Shiranui is rebuilding his underwater temple when Mizuchi reports that he gave the Moss of Earth's Ruin to Yurako. Shiranui thinks back to when he killed Daigo and recalls that Sana and their father, the Goko Clan Master, were watching him in silence. Shocked, he expected to be punished by his father, but instead he only was told that Daigo's spirit might haunt him, a simple and mild rebuke. However, for the first time, Shiranui said that Sana looked furious. He comments that she did not know they were brother and sister, and likely presumed he was merely another disciple of the clan. As Daigo flies away on his earthen creature, he thinks to himself that hopefully Sana will not stand in the way of his plans any longer.

Kagari nervously stands before Hakubi who comments she is behaving much more reservedly than she normally would. He tells her that is only natural given that she witnessed Soma's death. From the scroll appears a puppet needle capable of turning Mao into a beast that Hakubi can control. The soldier entrusts Kagari with the needle, telling her she must prick Mao with it. Elsewhere Mao catches Hyakka up on what has been happening with Daigo. Nanoka points out that Daigo must be on their side, but Hyakka comments that he is only on their side until Shiranui and Hakubi are killed, then they will have to start killing one another to break the pot binding curse of immortality. As Mao, Nanoka and Otoya leave Hyakka they are attacked by a multi-headed iron beast. Mao and Nanoka fend it off easily, but Mao is nearly hit by the puppet needle from behind. (The Seeds of Suspicion)
Staring at the remnants of the small beast, Mao and Nanoka realize that it was likely sent by Kagari, who they last saw being poisoned by her sister, Ayame. As Kagari watches the seedling sprout from her arm, she realizes it is a result of the Seed of Haku that she accepted after she was poisoned. Suddenly Sasuga appears and explains to her that he was sent to watch over her. Just then, Mao and Nanoka arrive as well. Seeing the vines growing from Kagari's hand, Mao tries to warn Kagari that the Seed of Haku will temporarily protect her until it eventually grows throughout her body and destroys her. Kagari admits that she wants Hakubi to count on her. When Sasuga asks Kagari if she wants help Nanoka threatens to join the battle, so Sasuga and Nanoka wait and let Kagari face Mao alone. Hurling her Puppet Needle at Mao, he easily blocks it with his bird shikigami and takes the needle away from her. Now disarmed, Sasuga steps in and takes Kagari away, telling her that without her tool his job is to see her safely back to the Goko Clan. Mao and Nanoka realize that at this rate Kagari will end up like Soma.

Chapter 283: 御恩返し
Goonkaeshi

(Repaying My Debt)
Mao and Nanoka report Kagari has survived to her sister, Ayame, who is relieved to hear the news. However, Mao explains that Kagari's situation is not wholly positive, as she has been infected with a Seed of Haku, which will eventually claim her life. At the Goko Clan's hideout, Mei prunes the vines growing from Kagari and explains that what Mao said is true about the seed. When Kagari becomes angry, Hakubi arrives and reminds her that she wanted to live when the curse nearly killed her, that she accepted this was the only way to do so. After he departs, Mei shares that Kamon knows how to remove the Seed of Haku so that it will not kill her, however Kagari knows that running away will result in her fate being the same as Soma's. Mei tells Kagari that she should leave, that feeling ignored by her own family and acknowledged by Hakubi and the Goko Clan are not enough of a reason to give up her life. Mei explains that she has killed for the Goko Clan, but Kagari has not yet taken a life, it is not too late for her to mend her ways. Left alone, Kagari soon realizes that the iron rats are watching her for Hakubi. Later at a factory, Ayame arrives to exorcise some workers who were unable to wake up. She immediately recogizes the simple curse as the work of her sister and reports this to Mao. With Mao and Ayame at the factory, Otoya and Nanoka are left alone at Mao's home when suddenly Kagari arrives with the iron rats in tow.

She tells Nanoka that she has come for the Puppet Needle, something Hakubi told her not to worry about, however she is ashamed she lost it. Her shikigami are immediately destroyed when she commands them to retrieve the needle, thanks to a barrier placed on the box by Mao. Knowing the shikigami can no longer report back to Hakubi, Kagari plans to force Nanoka to retrieve the needle and use it to make her find Kamon. Instead, Nanoka simply offers to take Kagari to Kamon so he can remove the Seeds of Haku, with no questions asked. Kagari agrees to go, but is shocked and confused that Nanoka would help her after their long rivalry. Nanoka asks Kagari if she is glad that Soma died so she could be promoted within the Goko Clan. Kagari honestly says no, she thought Soma would be kicked out for his failure and was shocked that he was killed instead. Suddenly Kagari senses something and both she and Nanoka flee the rickshaw they were riding. Hakubi appears in midair and as Nanoka turns to face him, Kagari realizes that if she does not act, Hakubi will kill them both. Chapter 285: 監禁
Kankin

(Confinement)
As Hakubi arrives, Nanoka, pricked by Kagari's needle can do nothing but lay on the ground, completely paralyzed. Hakubi begins to question Kagari about what she is doing with Nanoka, and the young girl quickly begins to lie, saying that she lured Mao away to get the Puppet Needle back only to learn it was cursed by Mao, at which point she took Nanoka hostage in hopes of forcing Mao to break the curse on the needle. As she apologizes for taking matters into her own hands, Hakubi tells her to kill Nanoka. When she hesitates, Hakubi offers to help her with her first kill, only for Mao to arrive and protect Nanoka. Mao removes the needle from Nanoka, allowing her to move once more. Hakubi escapes taking Kagari with him. Back at their mansion, he tells her that they will retrieve the Puppet Needle some other time, but that he believes she is concerned about the Seed of Haku within her body. He uses the opportunity to point out that Mei was saved by the seed, and she is living in good health. He then sends Kagari to her room, where she learns that she has had a barrier placed around the room, keeping her there. Downstairs, Hakubi tells Mei that he plans to keep her alive until the Battle of the Five-Sided Temple is complete, as her Puppet Needle will play an important role in taking control of Mao. He also considers the idea that if Kagari is eliminated, he could always use her sister Ayame as a replacement. Back in the city, Hyakka cleans his food cart, thinking about Daigo and his relationship with Yurako, when suddenly Yurako herself appears, asking if he knows that she in fact tried to kill Daigo.

The only thing he can suggest is that Yurako herself goes into hiding under the battle for succession has concluded. Some time later a tanuki comes to tell Mao about a dilapidated house that some villagers were trying to pull down, only to find it packed with earth. When they tried to shovel out the earth, a spiraling blast of soil came flying out. As it twisted into the sky a flock of ayakashi swarmed down and attacked it. When Mao goes with Nanoka to investigate, Hyakka insists on coming along, obviously thinking that Daigo may be hiding here. Arriving at the house, Otoya sets up a barrier and Hyakka and Mao begin to try to purify the structure. Chapter 287: 大五の罠
Daigo no wana

(Daigo's Trap)
Nanoka is unconscious thanks to the Moss of Earth's Ruin that was infused in Yurako's ayakashi. Mao grabs Nanoka and rushes her away from the house in hopes of treating her while Daigo looks on, unnoticed by the others and smiles as he realizes that if Nanoka dies Mao will never forgive Yurako. Yurako herself is sad that Mao had no reaction other than to save Nanoka, not even a desire to punish her. Mao rushes Nanoka to Kamon who is able to treat her, but he asks Mao if Yurako intentionally tried to hurt Nanoka out of jealousy. Hyakka and Otoya arrive and Hyakka explains that Yurako did not intend to harm Nanoka, that she intended the poison to be for Daigo. Both Mao and Hyakka admit that they did not sense any trace of Daigo's powers coming from the house, leading them to suggest he set a trap to lure out Yurako by manipulating it so only her ayakashi could sense his essense. Kamon tells Mao that as long as he lets Nanoka follow him around she will be pulled into the battle of the Five-Sided Temple. When they look down at Nanoka, blood seeps from her eye and the wakes up. It seems her Byoki-infused blood has driven out the poison on its own. Mao is relieved to see Nanoka is alright and Hyakka quietly comments to Kamon and Otoya that he thinks that Mao and Nanoka may have feelings for one another, which stuns them that Hyakka has only just realized that.

Chapter 288: 同じ気持ち
Onaji kimochi

(The Feeling is Mutual)
Three days after being poisoned by the Moss of Earth's Ruin, Nanoka has made a full recovery and Mao invites her to come and help him with a backlog of exorcism that require his attention. He asks Otoya to stay behind and mind the doctor's office, implying it will take all day to handle his work, however he makes quick work of his cases and invites Nanoka to go view the cherry blossoms with him. Nanoka comments that no one is having drinking parties beneath the cherry blossoms as they stroll together watching the petals fall and Mao apologizes for endangering Nanoka. Mao explains that he had wanted Nanoka to grow stronger by battling against ayakashi, but now she is being dragged into the Goko Clan's war of succession, which is much too dangerous. He then asks Nanoka if she will remain in her world in the future until the fight for the Goko Clan's successor is settled. Nanoka is puzzled, wondering if Mao is simply tired of her, but Mao speaks directly from his heart, telling Nanoka that he will go back to living as he did before her knew her, but anxiously awaits the day they can see each other again. Nanoka wonders if Mao means "as friends" but he tells her honestly that he loves her, though he adds that he thinks it may be one-sided. With that Nanoka asks Mao to hold her and tells him that she loves him too as they embrace.
