289: 誠実な思い
Seijitsu na omoi
(Sincerity)
Yurako ponders Daigo's trap, realizing that it was not for her, but to harm Nanoka and make it seem as if she was to blame. Realizing that Mao must now hate her, Hakubi comes to speak to Yurako and tells her that he has recovered and now will keep his word about killing Daigo. Yurako realizes that because of her immortality she can be patient and win Mao back, but Nanoka will eventually die given her mortal lifespan. However, Yurako has decided that Daigo is someone she can never forgive. Daigo, meanwhile, is visiting Mao and checking to make sure Nanoka is alright. Daigo claims innocence, explaining that the house was a trap to lure out Yurako, and insisting Yurako's ayakashi must have attacked Nanoka. When Mao inquires about the earthen tornados that seemed to be drawn towards Nanoka, Daigo says it must have only been because she is an earth-user like he is. He claims to know that Mao cares for Nanoka thanks to having seen things through Natsuno's eyes. Mao confirms this and Daigo takes his leave, amused that Mao does not care at all about Yurako. As he takes his leave, Hakubi attacks Daigo. Daigo is amused that Hakubi still has a soft spot for Yurako, and Mao and Otoya slip outside, sensing the nearby battle.

290: 鋼の獣
Hagane no kemono
(Steel Beast)
Daigo and Hakubi begin their battle with Daigo taunting that even if Hakubi kills him it will not make Yurako love him, she is too captivated by Mao to feel anything for the soldier. Hakubi summons forth a steel beast, a metallic tiger that begins to attack Daigo. Hakubi says he conjured the beast using Soma's scroll, and the creature is infused with all of Soma's energy after his death. Mao arrives in time to see Daigo open a huge fissure that pulls Hakubi in before pressing back together to crush him. Believing he has killed Hakubi, Daigo and Mao are shocked with Yurako's ayakashi erupt from the earth, still carrying the Moss of Earth's Ruin with the intent of spreading the poison to Daigo.

Chapter
291: 不安と安らぎ
Fuan to yasuragi
(Doubt and Peace)
Mao attacks Yurako's ayakashi and when they are slain they release the Moss of Earth's Ruin, prompting Daigo to retreat to a safe distance. Yurako flees, having pulled Hakubi out of the fissure created by Daigo, though she thinks to herself that she only wants Hakubi to stay alive long enough to kill Daigo. After the battle, Mao silently wonders about Daigo, recalling how the boy who was like a brother to him was so morally honest and straightforward and now seems prone to deceptive tactics. He wonders if Nanoka getting doused with the poisonous moss was truly an accident. Arriving home, Mao finds Nanoka nervously awaiting him outside, she admits she feels shy after they both confessed they have feelings for each other. Inside Mao purifies the small particles of poisonous moss from his clothes to ensure Nanoka does not become sick again. Nanoka quickly realizes that this means Yurako was at the battle and asks if Mao spoke to her. Mao says there was no time for conversation, and then sits down next to Nanoka, inviting her to touch him now that the moss has been purified. Both seem happy as Nanoka randomly touches Mao's shoulders and chest. Elsewhere in the mountains at Aogasa Orphanage, children eat their breakfast and then suddenly struggle to breathe before turning to bronze. Hearing about this Shiranui dispatches Mei and Renji to investigate, suspecting that a cursed artifact may be to blame.

292: 銅像化の謎
Dozoka no nazo
(The Mystery of the Bronze Statues)
Mao and Nanoka arrive to investigate the children who have turned to bronze, the matron of the orphanage explains that there are legends that the land is cursed. She explains that the land upon which the orphanage has been built once housed a manor that burned mysteriously, killing the family inside, though in the remains of the manor were found strange bronze statues. Outside Renji and Mei begin their investigation, but they head up the nearby mountain, as Shiranui indicated that the artifact behind the curse can be found there instead of at the orphanage. Renji notices Hakubi's iron beasts are following them and Mei silently reflect that Hakubi must suspect that she may try to flee after telling Kagari that she should allow Mao and Kamon to exorcise the Seed of Haku and abandon the Goko Clan herself. Renji discovers a deer that has become bronze after drinking from a nearby stream and they soon discover a huge man holding a sword into the water which seems to be the source of the bronze curse. The man quickly swats away Renji's kakachu and then starts to choke Mei when she attacks him with her vines. Mao, Nanoka and Otoya find Renji knocked unconscious and later that night Mei awakens to find that she has been abducted by the man who has taken her to a village where he has turned everyone into bronze.

Chapter
293: 毒水の剣
Dokumizu no tsurugi
(The Sword of Poison Water)
Kidnapped by the strange man, Mei asks if he is a human or an ayakashi as she notes his hair and hand have started to turn to bronze. The man admits that he is human, the son of the landowner who once lived at the foot of the mountain. He reveals that the Sword of Poison Water has been an heirloom in his family for generations and with it any water source the sword touches poisons all who drink from it, turning them into bronze. Rushing up the mountain, Renji revives and tells Mao, Nanoka and Otoya that Mei was with him and was captured by the strange man. In the desolate village, the man beats Mei and rips her dress open as he prepares to rape her. Mao arrives just in time, knocking the man away as Renji rushes in to cover Mei with his robe. He is angry with himself that he did not arrive sooner and notices Hakubi's iron beasts hovering in the air, wondering why they made no effort to save Mei. She tells Mao about the Sword of Poison Water, prompting the man to explain the blade. His ancestors had used it to gain power, kill their rivals and keep other villages in check by poisoning their water supplies. However when the man's father became the head of the family he planned to seal the sword away. Rather than allow this to happen, the sharp-toothed man killed his father and brother, drowning them in a tub with the sword and turning them to bronze. His mother, who had suffered from depression saw what happened and doused herself in lamp oil and set herself ablaze. The man escaped the burning manor and let the world think he had died with his family. After hiding for five years he was shocked to find an orphanage had been built on his family's land and plotted to kill everyone to get his land back. Shocked by his cruelty, Renji prepares to kill him using his kakachu, however Mao stops him, explaining that killing this man will not restore the children that were turned into bronze statues.
