Urusei Yatsura 1985 Calendar Review

Time passes fast, so lets jump in the time machine and look back at the 1985 Urusei Yatsura calendar featuring unique pieces of anime inspired artwork made just for this now-rare piece. Source: Rumic World YouTube Channel

More Urusei Yatsura Anime News
The series is going to be handled by David Production, who has done a tremendous job on the recent Jojo's Bizarre Adventure anime. Hideya Takahashi and Yushiro Kimura from Golden Wind are directing, Yuuko Kakihara scripting, and Naoyuki Asano (Osomatsu-kun) doing character designs. The anime is planned to run for a full year, so roughly 52 episodes, and is one of four series that will be done this year in honor of Shogakukan's 100th anniversary.

Rumiko Takahashi has commented:

"Happy New Year.
In the year of the Tiger, "Urusei Yatsura" will be animated again.
The character designer is Naoyuki Asano from "Osomatsu-san". I love "Osomatsu-san" and watched it without fail, so I'm very happy.
Forty years ago, "Urusei Yatsura" was also a work that was blessed to be played by the best voice actors, including Toshio Furukawa and Fumi Hirano. This time too, Hiroshi Kamiya, Sumire Uesaka of Lamb, all the other characters, and the voice actors of the leading role are surprised at the luxury. Please look forward to it, viewers.
The scenario is also interesting, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how Directors Takahashi and Kimura will visualize it. I think it will be a work that both fans of the past and those who do not know "Urusei Yatsura" can enjoy, so please take a look."

Additionally, Toshio Furukawa and Fumi Hirano have answered questions and welcomed the new cast members:

Toshio Furukawa:

Q1. What does "Urusei Yatsura" mean to Mr. Furukawa?
I think it's an anime that has expanded the range of defense from the previous anime, for example, the second character like the main character of a giant robot, to the third character like a hit. I think that encountering such epoch-making works has an important meaning in continuing to work as an active player for the rest of my life.

Q2 To Mr. Hiroshi Kamiya, who newly plays Ataru Moroboshi
, I think that there are as many acting theories as there are professional voice actors. The acting theory in this case refers to "creating a role = acting plan", but it is interesting that each person is different, and of course, I am looking forward to Kamiya-san's unique hit. Before that, everyone will admit that Kamiya-san has already established his acting theory so well that he doesn't need any advice or ale from others.

Fumi Hirano:

Q1. What does "Urusei Yatsura" mean to Ms. Hirano?
The anime "Urusei Yatsura" is my debut as a voice actor. And Lum-chan is an ideal female image for me as well as fans. It is an irreplaceable work even after 40 years have passed since the broadcast started.
When I think about it now, despite the debut work, it was the highest-class staff and the veteran co-stars who generously showed off their advanced skills as voice actors who were able to record without stress or anxiety. I am deeply grateful that this is because he naturally raised me like this.
From some time ago, the staff at the workplace started to say, "I want to tell me that I'm working together like this now." I am very honored and proud. Perhaps Toshio Furukawa, who plays the role of Darling, has the same experience.
It is also our pride that the original author, Rumiko Takahashi, continues to produce hits and continue to play an active role on the front lines.

Q2. Welcome to Sumire Uesaka, who will play Lum, to Rumic World, our beloved Rumiko Takahashi! The new Reiwa Lum-chan was born in the year of the Tiger = Tiger! What do you say you should do other than expect this! By all means, please take good care of the darling's father and mother on the earth and have an outstanding performance! I'm looking forward to it too!!! Source: UY-Allstars.com

Viz Notes on Yashahime
In a July 20th interview with ANN CEO Chris Macdonald, Viz Media Senior Vice President of Animation Brian Ige had the following to say about Yashahime:

Macdonald: Last question: Yashahime is one of your biggest titles in recent years. From your perspective, has the series been successful at topping the InuYasha nostalgia?

Ige: I think it adds to it. I don't think it will top InuYasha; in terms of that world, I think the original InuYasha series is always gonna be king. That's what kind of started everything, then there was InuYasha: The Final Act, and then Yashahime – it's kind of similar to Boruto in that regard. It skews a little younger. When I talked about content that makes sense domestically versus internationally, there are differences. The younger-skewing content tends to do better in Japan as spinoffs from the original series, which is why they continue to follow that model.

Here, what we're seeing is a tendency for the content to skew up, to become a little more mature, teen+, R-rated, darker. And I think that's what seems to resonate well with audiences here. From the original source material, you start to see it age up a little bit versus age down.

Again, it's a little mixed for Yashahime. I think fans of the original series are always gonna gravitate towards the spinoffs, and we've seen success through the different services that we've placed Yashahime, but it's not like going from Naruto to Naruto Shippuden if you know what I mean. So I think that's where the biggest difference is – the age target for Yashahime seems to target a younger demographic from the original series. Source: Anime News Network
