Volume 39

Interior Chapter Note: This is Takahashi. Thanks to the support of the readers, I decided to draw on a sunny stage called serialization. I'm still worried because I don't know how my work will be read. We would appreciate it if you could give us your feedback. I just want to draw it for the rest of my life. Nice to meet you.

Editor's Note: Chapter 5 was the end of the initial serialization, basically a "try out."

Shonen Sunday Extra August

Interior Ch. Note: Thank you very much for your kind words about my debut work Those Selfish Aliens. I have also treasured the judges notes like a love letter.

Shonen Sunday Extra September

Interior Ch. Note: This is my second work after winning the Newcomers Manga Award. I'm doing my best without fail. Additionally, a new serialization is scheduled in for issue 39 of this magazine. Please read my first serialized work as well as this Golden Gods of Poverty. I would appreciate it if you could tell me what you think. Thank you for your support.

Shonen Sunday Extra November

Thank you very much for your support of this serialization in the magazine. I will continue to draw Urusei Yatsura and it will be published in a magazine. Please never forget Ataru-kun, Lum-chan and Shinobu-chan.

Shonen Sunday Extra December

Interior Ch. Note: There was a school festival at the university. I'm in the manga study group, right? That's where Urusei Yatsura was born. I put Lum on the panel we were making and used colored paper. Then a guy said, "Wow, you're imitating Rumiko Takahashi!" But he'd read it, hadn't he? I was happy.

However, in the two-legged waraji of college students and manga artists, long-term serialization is time-consuming. I have a lot of motivation to create, so I will do my best to work in the special issue Dust Spurt!!.

Webmasters' Note: Chapter 18 was the final chapter of the short term series that was published sporadically while Takahashi was still in college.

Shonen Sunday Zokan - May 25th

Wherever people live, there will always be garbage, and wherever there is garbage there will always be cockroaches. Of course, I'm a big cockroach. However, I am impressed by its strong vitality. In this work I would like to draw a character with a strong vitality like a cockroach.

Shonen Sunday Zokan - July 25th

Lately my stomach has been in bad shape, it always feels full even though I haven't eaten. It's frustrating!

Shonen Sunday Zokan - August 25th

Now that school is out for the summer, I'm hustling on both my manuscript and my graduation thesis! It's a fierce hustle!

Shonen Sunday Zokan - September 25th

I just finished writing Dust Spurt and my graduation thesis. Thank you for reading Dust Spurt. Thanks to all of your support I've managed to make it somehow. I'm also drawing Urusei Yatsura at a pace of about one story per month. Thank you very much.

Interior Ch. Note: Apparently I can graduate from university, and finally I'm getting a job in the world of manga. Moreover, although I am prepared for the long-term serialization of Urusei Yatsura, I'm a little worried. I feel like I'm a small boat that has embarked on the ocean. I don't know where to go yet, but I'll do my best! !!

(Webmasters' Note: Chapter 23 is the beginning of the uninterrupted, weekly full-scale run of Urusei Yatsura.)

1983

Volume 1-2

I hope that 1983 will be another good year. Every year notwithstanding your heart is renewed. This is one of those days.

Volume 3-4

For New Year's Day I'm going to my parents house. I want to eat as soon as I get there.

Volume 5

I played on a computer the other day. The graphics will appear in issues 7 and 10. More details in the next issue.

Volume 6

The CG I played with the other day will be in issue 7. I'm not good with mechanical stuff but it was interesting.

Volume 7

Was that the CG I drew? It's pretty good for a first time, isn't it?

Volume 8

I can see Mount Fuji from my workroom on a clear day, but I'm annoyed that a building is blocking the view.

Volume 9

I went to the Nagoya/Osaka area preview of the new Urusei Yatsura movie. It was really fun.

Volume 10

I saw the movie of Urusei Yatsura at the preview. It's interesting. Everyone should see it.

Volume 11

Ah... Number 97 was pulled. They transfered him after how many years? He did his job perfectly!

Volume 12

I'm overwhelmed by the mountains of garbage... I wonder why there's so much?

Volume 13

It snowed heavily the other day. I was working so hard I didn't even notice the thunder.

Volume 14

It's spring... it's getting warmer and warmer these days.

Volume 15

I ate Russian hors d'oeuvres. They were delicious.

Volume 16

I haven't had TK Hotel's blueberry pie in awhile. It's really something.

Volume 17

The scenery outside my window is beginning to bloom and color is returning. I love to watch the seasons changing.

Volume 18

The mangaka who have serials in Sunday played baseball. I would have liked to, but work...

Volume 19

I met the science fiction writer Motoko Arai. The story of the movie was very fresh.

Volume 20

At Mr. Shintani's party, I was told the food was Southern French cuisine. I was just glad it was so delicious.

Webmasters' Note: Shintani is Kaoru Shintani, who was publishing Futari Daka (ふたり鷹) in Shonen Sunday at the time.

Volume 21

Well folks, it's almost GW. It's really GW. And I... have to work...

Webmasters' Note: GW is Golden Week, a holiday in Japan when most people are off work.

Volume 22

I ate French cuisine in Roppongi. It was delicious. Lately I've been talking about food. Why is that?

Volume 23

I visited a certain manga artist's house. The house is beautiful, and my workspace is so dirty in comparison.

Volume 24

To be completely honest, I've never left Honshu in my life, but right now I'm in a foreign country.

Volume 25

I ate sushi with my mother.

Webmasters' Note: It's hard to fully read this one in our copy.

Volume 26

I went to Bali on a short trip aboard. It was a short trip but it was fun!!

Volume 27

I just got back from my overseas trip and now its work, work, work, work, work, work!

Volume 28

Fans often give me gifts. Thank you. It makes me very happy.

Volume 29

My two assistants and I went to see Star Wars for the first time.

Webmasters' Note: As this is 1983 she is most likely talking about Return of the Jedi.

Volume 30

I love to swim. So the other day, I impulsively went for a swim in the sea in Shonan. Ha ha ha ha...

Volume 31

I'm moving soon, but I'm busy with work and not sure how to prepare. I'm in trouble.

Volume 32

Everyone likes summer. Even though I'm busy, I like to swim at the pool. I'm determined to do it.

Volume 33

The other day, Shinichi Hoshi, Shigesato Itoi, and I had a conversation. I knew they were good talkers!

Webmasters' Note: Takahashi and Itoi had met before in this interview.

Volume 34

I'm now moved in. I was so impressed with how amazing the rooms were that I was almost overwhelmed.

Volume 35

I wish that I could say that I feel refreshed in my new workplace, but I have a mountain of manuscripts to work on.

Volume 36

I hope to be able to relax now that the special (Zokan) issue of the magazine is finished and the move is over.

Volume 37

It’s hot outside apparently? Not that I’d know since I don’t leave the comfort of my cool and refreshing room.

Volume 38

Summer vacation is already over, but I still have to finish my homework and assignments quickly...

Volume 39

Thank you so much for coming to our book signing in Kyushu!

Volume 40

This summer was long, but also short. I want to go to the pool and swim a lot more!

Volume 41

Urusei Yatsura volume 17 will arrive around the 18th. I'll see you then! ❤

Volume 42

I haven’t moved my body much since the signing. I feel like getting moving again.

Volume 43

The stereo went into the room next to the workspace. The studio is becoming more and more organized.

Volume 44

The bidet system was finally installed. The person who seems most excited about it is the person in charge...

Volume 45

I recently received a trophy to commemorate one million sales of my comics. It's really heavy.

Volume 46

Recently I've felt troubled like I don't have enough time. I can't sleep easily even if I'm in my futon.

Volume 47

Thank you so much for all the birthday presents! I'm so happy!

Volume 48

I really can't get rid of my fatigue. No matter how much I sleep, I'm still sleepy...somebody help me!

Volume 49

My body is sore. I think I need to get outside more and move around, but....

Volume 50

It's getting colder lately. At night, I want to snuggle up under the kotatsu and become Kotatsuneko.

Volume 51

My story will be published in the new issue of Zokan on December 14th. Please look for it.

Webmasters' Note: This story is Sleep and Forget.

Volume 52

The other day, I went to Nishi Hongan-ji with Suzumiya-sensei. We ate delicious food and were surrounded by crowds.

Webmasters' Note: This is likely Kazuyoshi Suzumiya who was about to start serializing Blizzard Princess (ブリザート・プリンセス) in the next issue.

1984

Volume 1-2

I have just finished writing Sleep and Forget to be published in the "New Year's Special Issue," and I'm feeling tired and at ease.

Volume 3-4

It's almost Christmas! After that, New Year's! When that is over... I'll be back at work...

Volume 5

I guess we will find out in the New Year if we’re happy for the new year or not. But at any rate, I wish you a happy new year.

Volume 6

I went back to my hometown for New Year's Day, but I didn't have much time to rest because I was always helping out. Boom boom!

Volume 7

It's been a long time coming, but thank you very much for the New Year's cards. I feel encouraged every time I see them.

Volume 8

The other day I had a great conversation with Kazumasa Hirai. I heard a lot of fun stories, and learned a lot.

Volume 9

I went to the preview of Beautiful Dreamer the other day. It was quite good. ❤

Volume 10

I went skiing in Karuizawa the other day. I'll be in the Maki-Kuni Special special released this month!!

Editor's Note: This is likely a reference to a comic made by her assistants Makiko Nagano and Kuniko Saito collected in the Shonen Sunday Urusei Yatsura Graphics.

Volume 11

Ladies and gentlemen, have you seen the movie Ikiru? It's a movie I'm enjoying a lot at the moment.

Volume 12

February is jam-packed with great movies to watch. I especially recommend Kujo and Suikoden!!

Editor's Note: The Suikoden Takahashi references here is the Chinese film Shui hu Chuan gu Shi Lang zi Yan Qing also known as Sung Dynasty Warriors.

Volume 13

Congratulations on your 25th anniversary, Sunday. Do your best for more interesting years ahead!

Volume 14

I saw Kujo! I was really impressed with the dog's performance!! So far, it's the best of the year....maybe?!

Volume 15

I wrote a one-shot for Sunday 25 to be released on March 16th. Please read it!

25th Anniversary Special

It's been a long time since I've done a gag work other than Urusei. I hope you enjoy it.

Webmasters' Note: This issue features the short story The Face Pack.

Volume 16

My short stories are finally going to be collected as a book!!

Volume 17

I want to see Nausicaa and Project A! I want to see 'em, I want to see 'em!!

Volume 18

Rumic BOOKS will be released on April 18th. My first art book, please be kind!

Volume 19

I don't know what it is lately, but it seems like all I do is work. I wish I could go cherry blossom viewing...

Volume 20

Fumi Hirano and I met up. It was great to finally meet up and have enough time for a leisurely chat.

(Webmasters' Note: Fumi Hirano is the voice of Lum in Urusei Yatsura.)

Volume 21

I haven't seen Nausicaa yet. I have the cassette but I want to see it in the theater first.

Volume 22

I've heard Golden Week celebrations are running rampant. I've never seen anything like it.

Volume 23

Hi, I finally saw Nausicaa and Project A, which I'd really been waiting for. I've had some free time.

Volume 24

I'm going to go on a trip but I'm not sure where. Wherever it is, I want to have fun.

Volume 25

Where will I be when this issue comes out? Oh you wandering traveller!

Volume 26

I've been to Onomichi, Kanazawa, and Noto. It's been a long time since I've spread my wings!!

Volume 27

Just as soon as I get back from my trip the man from work shows up. Is this destiny...?

Volume 28

We are currently making arrangements to publish a one-shot in the special issue of Shonen Sunday. I'll do my best, so thank you!!

(Webmasters' Note: This story would be A Mermaid Never Smiles, Part One.

Volume 29

I'm looking forward to seeing "Raiders 2"... I'm going to see it!!

(Editor's Note: "Raiders 2" is, of course, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.)

Volume 30

Lately I've been listening to tapes of Yuming. This helps get the work done.

Editor's Note: Yuming is the nickname of musician Yumi Matsutoya.

Volume 31

I saw Ai no Monogatari at work. I was deeply moved by Tomoyo-chan's cuteness.

Volume 32

The schedule is tight because of the special issue. It's a tough time of year.

Volume 33

Right now I'm writing A Mermaid Never Smiles for the special issue. Please look forward to it! ❤

Volume 34

On July 31st, I will go to Hokkaido for an autograph session. I'm really looking forward to it, thinking it will be cooler there than in Tokyo!!

Volume 35

It's summer. I want to go to the sea....or at least the pool. I miss the water!

Volume 36

Hehehheheheheh!! I went to the pool I struggled desperately because I'm shaped like a potato, hahaha!!

Volume 37

I'm writing the second part of A Mermaid Never Smiles. Ladies and gentlemen, please look forward to it.

Volume 38

I went to the pool and the movies. I've been busy lately, it's a bit tough I suppose?

Volume 39

I have plans to go see a Chinese dance performance. This is part of my job....really! Ehehheheh!

Volume 40

The staff went to see a Chinese dance performance without incident. It is nice to see something like this once in awhile.

Volume 41

I'm so busy that I wonder why I'm still busy even though I'm working hard.

Volume 42

The movie I wanted to go see with my parents ended before I knew it. Time moves quickly, doesn't it?

Volume 43

This is the first time in almost a year that I've done a full color chapter. I was so nervous that my hand shook.

Volume 44

It's been a long time since I rode on the train. While I was riding I was people watching and it was interesting.

Volume 45

I went to the dentist for the first time in about ten years. Looks like I have to have three teeth pulled....ugh...

Volume 46

I'm on vacation right now!! I'm walking around somewhere in Japan, wondering where I should go!!

Volume 47

My room is full after birthday celebrations. Thank you everyone year after year.

Volume 48

I received an Apogee and Perogee. They're so cute and charming!

Webmasters' Note: Apogee and Perigee (アポジー & ペリジー) are robots who released a self-titled album of electronic music for an unproduced musical. They are named for the points at which the moon is closest and furthest from the Earth.

Volume 49

I went to see the musical The Wiz. It was even more powerful to see it live.

Volume 50

Thank you to the dentist who smiles and puts on music. My teeth are doing great now!

Volume 51

At the end of this month my brother is getting married so temporarily I will go home to Niigata, but I will be back again.

Volume 52

It's getting chillier. I'm doing everything I can to make sure I don't catch a cold.

Shonen Sunday Zokan Volume 1

The year ends and the year begins... Did you have a good year!?

Shonen Sunday Zokan Volume 8

Even though I'm extremely busy, it's one of the pleasures to make something for the (Shonen Sunday) special edition. How fulfilling.
